“Must love winter sports” could be the slogan of this town at the base of Northern Italy’s Dolomite Mountains. Skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, and every other way of gliding across the snow is the favourite topics here, even when summer is in full tilt and Nordic walking and other high-altitude activities get added to the agenda. Two gondolas and a funicular on the edges of town whisk you up to the nearby ski resorts, which connect to a dozen or so more nearby. That’s literally hundreds of miles of easily accessible ski trails with one lift ticket. Back down in the valley, the après-ski atmosphere takes over the cobblestone streets.

Though still in Italy, you'll hear more German than Italian as you bike splendid trails, challenge yourself to a scenic hike, ski down impressive slopes or stroll a more gentle path through the valley. As automobiles became popular in the early 20th century, quiet little towns along popular roads suddenly found themselves tourist destinations. Mittenwald is one of them. This small Bavarian town in the northern foothills of the Alps, on the route to Innsbruck, Austria, has been a popular stop since the 1930s. For challenging walks, many area ski runs become hiking trails in summer. And visit the local violin museum (Mittenwald is known for the manufacture of fine string instruments).

Best known as the site of Napoleon’s exile, Elba’s long history stretches back to pre-Roman times, when it was settled by Ligures and then Etruscans. Situated in Nainital district of Uttarakhand, Corbett has long been a haunt for tourists and wildlife lovers. The oldest national park in India, Corbett, has over 400 different species of flora and over 550 different species of fauna. The park is best known as a protected area for the critically endangered Bengal tiger of India. Tourism is allowed in selected areas of Corbett Tiger Reserve so that people get an opportunity to see its splendid landscape and the diverse wildlife living here. There are many accommodation facilities at Ramnagar as well as at the Corbett National Park. Being one of the most frequently visited parks in the country, the forest department and other agencies have their hotels, lodges, rest houses, log huts for the visitors.
