Detailed Reviews
Relaxing place to escape the bustling city, very nice beach and sunset. It's close to the city of Kota Kinabalu and easy to reach from airport too. Specially for families, or toghter with friends for a short break. Sunsets are beautiful and colourful.

We have just returned from 3 weeks in Borneo and after spending so many days on the go, hiking, caving, white water rafting, snorkelling and a bit of sun worshiping we stopped at the Seaside Travellers Inn for our last 6 days. Although it is situated in Kinarut ,a village outside Kota Kinabalu, buses run past the door to KK. The trip is about 20 mins and only 6 RM. We hired a car with the $'s we saved on accomadation and found the KK traffic and roads a breeze.
The hotel is clean and the deluxe rooms we opted for spacious with beautiful views of the South China Sea from the balcony. The pool though smaller than the resorts in town was lovely and as there are only 23 rooms most of the time we had it to ourselves. The family run the hotel as though you were their guest rather than customers and will help in every way they can.
We found the restraunt well priced and its position on the beach was a beautiful spot to watch the sunset. Our daughters went riding by in 3 mornings as we sipped our coffee. The Kindawan Riding School is only a few doors away and a greatr bonus when travelling with kids.
If you are on a budget or those like us who like to spend our $ with the locals and not big company chain hotels we recommend this hotel highly. We looked at the resort next door which was recommended by a travel agent here in Australia and couldn't see what the $500 AU difference bought you...!

Set in a large section of land from the main road onto the beach. We stayed in one of the bungalows for 80.000 MYR a night. Basically furnished. TV but no English speaking channels. Clean with attached bathroom with hot water. Free wifi and free drinking water. Our bungalow was steps away from a lovely swimming pool with sun beds. Though set on the beach the water didn’t look too good and with warning signs saying beware of the jelly fish we stayed with swimming in the pool. There’s a restaurant with great views overlooking the beach which was great to watch the sunset with a beer. The complimentary breakfast was also served here. The restaurant menu was limited and slightly more expensive than other places we’d eaten in. The food was ok but not great. Unfortunately due to this places’ location there wasn’t anywhere else nearby to eat, which was probably the only negative about this place. Friendly staff, swimming pool and great views with a budget price, make this a great place to kick back for a while if not too fussy about food options.

We stayed at the Beach House Room 1 & 3 which had private balconies looking out to an amazing to die for sea view & sunset. The rooms were spacious & clean with comfortable beds. Breakfast was simple but delicious. They served good lunches too. Ask for Room 1 which is bigger with a sofa sitting area and a bigger balcony right next to the sea.

My wife and I stayed at the Seaside between April 9-15th and found the accommodations to be excellent. We stayed in room #1 for under 100RM/night and found it a great value. There are big windows facing the sea, AC and a shared bathroom and it was all very clean and well maintained on a daily basis. You step out your door and can have breakfast facing the sea. It takes 30-35 RM to take a taxi into the city but only 3 RM if you take the 17C bus that stops right outside the inn. The staff was very friendly as were the other travelers. Compared to some of the downtown lodges, etc. this was quieter, more local, and more beautiful.
The restaurant was ok and offered the standard fare and good drinks.
One final exceptional point: James, one of the owners, was a great resource for trips and local advice and has a very real passion for the inn and what he does. We had the privilege of taking one of his tours to Mt. Kinabalu and it was a real highlight of our trip. He has a wealth of local knowledge and it was pleasure to meet him.
This place is highly recommended from a pair of discerning and often overly critical budget travelers.
A couple of other KK notes to share:
Snorkeling at Manukan island. Once you arrive at the dock go to the tip of the island on your right—the piece facing the city--and you’ll find the best snorkeling.
Canopy walk at Poring was fun.
The Sunday Market has a bit of everything but not great for gifts, at least for us. The Rafflesia store next to the Wisma mall was quite good as was another store in the esplanade area in front of the Le Meridien hotel between the Coffee Bean and the big Seafood Village.
Railroad is mostly closed for 2007
The river safari to see the Proboscis on the Gurana River(sp.?) was well organized and worth the 2 hour trip from KK
Mt. Kinabalu was spectacular and while we didn’t do the hike we toured the various orchid gardens and took the guided tour. Worth it for the incredible air and vistas alone.
We visited the Sabah Tea Plantation after it closed but it looks like a great place to explore and do some mountain biking.
Taxis don’t have meters so ask how much before you get going.
Wonderful people, astounding nature, great food, the first Malaysian vacation of many!

The Seaside Travellers Inn was a great value and nice place to stay. KK is fairly boring (though we did go during Chinese New Year when most of the shops were closed). I see no reason to pay high prices for the big chains in KK when the Seaside Travellers Inn offers a much more beautiful location set on the beach with a nice pool and great cafe. It is about 25 minutes from KK and the hotel will pick you up. You can also take the 17C minibus to the city, but I think you will prefer to stay on the beach. I highly recommend the Fish Curry and a whole coconut on the seaside cafe. The owners are very nice and have relatives that own a cheap B&B in Sepilok/Sandakan if you want to see the Orangutans.

This was our last night accommodation with an Intrepid trip and it was totally unacceptable. It is 20 km south of Kota Kinabalu (over an hour drive in traffic) in an industrial area. Tours will not pick you up here and taxis charge extra. The accommodation is old, poor repair and generally dirty. Wifi poor to non existent. "Beach" is filthy and there is no way that you should be swimming in the water. Breakfast is minimal. This is the first location in Malaysia where bottled water was not provided to drink. Never mind complimentary, it just wasn't available.
What we were charged for a night accommodation was about the same as what we paid for a lovely room in a three star hotel in the center of Kota Kinabalu.

It is a basic hotel with a nice enough pool close to the sea. Rooms and sunbeds look a bit worse for wear but ok enough for a budget place. However, we had money stolen from our room. Someone looking like housekeeping walked in but when we came back a bit later the bed wasn't even made (which maybe should have warned us but we didn't want to think bad of people). The room was then made up later that day and the next morning we realised some cash (both MYR and BP) had been taken. A not so nice end to an otherwise nice holiday!

We stayed 3 nights in Room Number 1 - this has the best position - on one side a shared balcony although no one else ever used it, and on the other side another seating area leading up to the dining area. it overlooks the sea and you can hear the waves lapping all day. breakfast was basic but ok. wifi poor.

Tripadvisor is spot on - this is a really good place, provided you know what it is and what it isn't. For us it was perfect because it delivered exactly what we were looking for - location is about 20 minutes south of KK by car (about RM50 for a 7-seater taxi as we are family of 6, maybe bit cheaper for smaller taxi/fewer people but negociate!). I gather you can travel to town easily and cheaply by bus too but we didn't. It's right on the beach - and a much nicer and cleaner bit of beach than in most of KK it is, although very thin ie only 3 or 4 metres of sand. But the views across the bay are wonderful. The grounds are quiet and green, very attractive; nice pool with old sunloungers. Even a ropey old tennis court and ancient rackets that was fun. Table tennis was another bonus but you wouldn't come here for a long stay if you wanted lots of facilities. Our room was the 6-bed dorm room, very good value (RM200 per night inc breakfast). The dining room is on the first floor overlooking the bay, spectacular. Nice menu, very good value. Breakfast just fruit and toast, some porridge. Service is fine, really pleasant front desk staff - and throughout just a relaxed atmosphere. We stayed 3 nights - it was much more than just a base for making day trips (if you want that, much easier to stay in KK town as it's nearer); we had at least a day and a half just lounging around enjoying the hotel pool and grounds but equally you probably wouldn't stay here for more than a few days. Happy to answer any further questions.
