Detailed Reviews
Our family of 5 stayed at Starfish Cayo Largo the first week of July. This was the first time flying for my two grandchildren (8 and 11 yrs) and they had a fantastic time as did my son and daughter-in-law. We had two beautiful full ocean view rooms, side by side. It was the kids' first time experiencing salt water and they adjusted very quickly. They loved the train shuttle to Sirena beach. The ocean in front of the hotel was red flagged every day but twice we were able to go in a little ways and jump in the wave. Our dedicated concierge, Yanelis, was went above and beyond to ensure our vacation was perfect. Our maid on the second floor of building 45 delighted the children with her towel art that greeted them every day after swimming. The bar staff and buffet staff were professional and expert in their service. The food was exceptional all week. We attended one a la carte at Spoons and chose pork - tender, sweet, and satisfying. The repeat guest special dinner was a treat a s well. I was the only one who chose the lobster but compared to our Atlantic Ocean lobster, it can't compare. The meat was overcooked and tough and with no lemon butter or garlic, it was not enjoyable. The others had pork and were very happy with their meal. Nightly entertainment was mainly music and dancing; no big shows due to lack of clientele. Our excursion to see Iquana Island, the starfish and an hour's snorkeling was worth the price. It was very hot and humid all week but the AC was refreshing. All week, workers were trucking in tons and tons of sand to expand the beach in front of the hotel. It will be very nice when completed; unfortunately, the wild waves make it very unsafe to enter the ocean. I heard the hotel is going to place an artificial reef a few feet out from the shoreline which will indeed make the swimming area very safe to enter. I love this destination. Thank you Blue Diamond Group and Starfish and Sunwing for a most happy week's vacation in Cuba. Cheers!

After 35 vacations in Cuba with the majority of them in Cayo Largo, it's difficult to be impartial, but here it goes. We just returned from another super stay at the Starfish Cayo Largo. We were a little concerned about the beach due to recent reviews; however, we always had a lounger by the water and although not wide, the beach was there between the Memories and Starfish. Several days were very calm so you could float without worrying about the waves. Seaweed came and went, but was never a big problem.
The property continues to be clean and garden replanting projects were underway site wide. Walkways and paths are well marked and lit in the evening. Entertainment is still taking place in the lobby and by the pool while the stage is being rebuilt. No signs of the rumoured construction on a new Italian restaurant in the old lobby bar area were seen.
Our room was beautiful with wonderful sea views and sounds of the surf that lulled us to sleep each night. The maids kept the fridge well stocked with water and towels were changed daily. Beach towels are now in rooms upon arrival. Great idea!
The food in the buffet and the Ranchon was quite good. Although the selection was limited, what they did have was tasty and most condiments readily available. White wine and cheese were absent all week, but we always bring wine just in case. The rose was a good alternative. Cheese appeared on the last morning. Supply boat irregularities make it impossible to expect items consistently weekly. The repeaters dinner by the sea was fabulous!
What keeps us returning year after year (sometimes 3 times a year) is the staff. They go above and beyond to ensure you not only have a great vacation, but that your days are filled with laughter and fun! Our butlers Yulette (spelling?) and Adrian checked in with us daily in case we needed anything. We'd like to thank the front desk staff (Disney), customer relations (Yusmila), the buffet staff (Yoel our main waiter), Rhoder in food and beverage keeping the drinks well stocked, the snack bar gang (Roberto, Dinaldo, Yoan, Angel, Adolpho, Ester), the entertainment staff (Laritza), and the most excellent Ranchon crew (Noel, Ernesto, Mario, Yanny, Vlad, Henrys, Dyan, Rennier, Elizabeth and the support staff) for the very long lunches by the sea. Your service is top notch! :)
The new manager, Alfredo, is to be commended for his presence resort wide where he
can be seen checking to ensure that things are running smoothly and the clients are content! Great job!
If you are seeking nightlife and tours, try Varadero or Havana. However; if you are looking for a laid back atmosphere with a gorgeous beach setting and a brilliant staff, we would highly recommend this resort island paradise.

I go to Cuba twice a year for a past 20 years. I know what to expect, and generally happy with the basic things - reasonably clean room, access to a clean drinking water and a food which can sustain me and will not make me sick. I don't eat breakfast, so the "real" not instant coffee served at least in one location for a resort would be a reasonable wish. The coffee beans should not be on a "shortage items list", for a country where it's actually grown. The 5 days out of 7, the coffee was instant even in the lobby bar.
This was my first time on this island, and the deciding factor to choose this hotel was the price based on a single occupancy, and the reviews.
I'm generally satisfied with the stay. However, this was a first time when I had to strongly demand to change the room which was given to me upon my arrival.
I can look past the broken safe and doors and a cracked mirror, but the room was infested with bugs. The bathroom wall was literally covered in medium size black flies, and the little fruit like flies were everywhere in a main room.
The so called butler said that I should go to the reception and ask for another room. She herself, just run out and didn't help in any way, needless to say that I didn't see her again for the duration of my stay. I was very stressed and had to put up a lot of fuss to get another room.
My question is for the manager - why this room was even allowed to be assigned to a guest? Do you train your housekeepers to report potential problems?!
The 2nd room was quite adequate and didn't have any problems. Why did I need to put up a fight to get it?!
The lunch was served at the small place on the beach. There are simply not enough seats to accommodate everyone, people had to line up, the wind was very strong and it was difficult to eat after finally getting a table, the food was cold and constantly run out of any kind of meat or chicken.
The dinner was actually okay considering shortages and all.
The workers at the resort are nice and try their best to accommodate guests with very little resources they have.
The beach is beautiful, and that's what brings me to Cuba.
The bottom line, would I recommend this resort? Probably not, especially to anyone who never been to Cuba.
Would I go again? Yes, if the price point is right.
I wish that the management is more involved and visible on the resort, and talk to the guests in order to improve.

Just returned from a week at this resort. The resort itself could be nice. I had no hat water in my room unless I called every time I needed it but the phone in my room didn't work and they acknowledged that but didn't fix it. The shower in the room was set up for someone who was under 5 feet tall. The buffet restaurant had 2 steaming areas and one was totally useless. The Manager acknowledged that too but it wasn't fixed. The beach restaurant where lunch was served had a steamer that didn't work either and the Manager acknowledged that as well.
I asked for a room to change in as we had to check out at noon and the bus picked us up at 7:30pm. The Manager said I could stay in my room till 6. That was then reduced to 4:00 and then changed till 5:00. One hour to them is nothing but I tried to explain how important it is to a traveler. They just didn't get it.
The water in the rooms is salt water. I travel a lot and seldom get any illness but as of day 3, something I ate gave me a stomach bug. The fact that food wasn't cold and who knows how long it sits out might be the cause.
There are other hotels on the island that offer better service and food.
The Manager needs to get the place in order and take care of the obvious.

We had the best vacation at Starfish. The staff are amazing especially our Butler Daviel Torres Fometa. Daviel took such great care of us and is an incredibly nice person. Lizbeth in the store and Angel at the pool bar are just as incredible. The room was a little dated however it was clean, comfortable and we had hot water. The room was cleaned daily and whenever we asked for clean towels or extra water it was always delivered. The pool is amazing and the food was delicious with lots of choice. The A La Carte restaurants were great and the view of the ocean from the Ranchon is breathtaking. I highly recommend this resort if you are looking for a relaxing vacation. You can take a cab or the train to Sirena or Pairaso beach which are stunning.

Traveled to Cayo Largo over March break with friends. I would give a 5 star review for the staff! The welcome music, dancing and drinks instantly creates a great atmosphere. A huge thank you to Elisa, Daury, Masiel, Roanny and Sylvio. The trip would not have been as fun without you! Elisa, thank you for looking out for us girls all week, we miss you already! I Daury, you are amazing so happy to have had such a great butler! I don’t remember everyone’s name but the man who made the pasta and the entertainment staff were great. They often check in, enjoy chatting and spending time with guests. We loved learning to dance, spending the days in the sun and enjoyed the nightly activities. The white party, beach party and Cuban party beside the resort were a lot of fun. For the price you pay, it was great. The music crew is also amazing! I have traveled to other resorts in Cuba on the bigger islands and I found that the staff at Starfish go above and beyond. The island felt very safe, it is a small island so it is important to remember that the resources are limited. We always had something to eat despite shortages of dairy products.
We went on the catamaran excursion and visited the turtle rescue. The catamaran excursion was a long day, so I was happy to return to the resort. The turtle rescue was amazing, definitely worth the short trip to the Marina. The Marina area was beautiful, and a 6 minute taxi ride away from the resort. There is a little plaza and a restaurant, on the water. We enjoyed spending time here. The resort on the beach is limited, unlike other cuba beaches there was not much sand and a lot of seaweed. We visited Sirena beach a few times. The free train is bumpy (like a rollercoaster so some enjoyed it), spending $2 on the taxi was well worth it. You can walk down the beach forever, there are starfish, stingrays and the views are stunning.
We had no issues with our room, very clean and well maintained. We were in room 4123, the wifi was spotty but worked in most areas in the room and around the resort. I would definitely return to this resort. Remember to have realistic expectations going to Cuba, for the price you pay the experience is well worth it.

Hi all,
This was our 2nd trip to Starfish in 6 months. We have found our new home.
It is nice getting to a resort for once and knowing where everyone is and recognizing the people (as well as them recognizing you!)
Daviel was our "butler" again for this trip. I love this concept.
When/if you need something or have a question, you have a contact (you don't just go to the front desk and hope for the best). It is a great idea and more resorts should consider it.
The beach was absolutely amazing (they had worked very hard to rebuild parts that had eroded) and did a stellar job. The water was clear and almost no seaweed. It was a bit rougher at times but that changed hour to hour and didn't impede us from swimming in it daily.
The pool area was tidy and clean (as usual) and we enjoyed the animation team. It was just the right amount of engagement.
The room was nice (same one we had in the spring) and once we figured the shower out we had loads of hot water whenever we needed it.
Eating: There is a main buffet that you can eat at for breakfast and dinner. I would usually have a fresh omelet with fresh mango juice for breakfast but there were many options.
Dinners I generally had something from the fresh pasta bar. I'm not the adventurous type and I didn't starve lol.
Lunch can be had at the Ranchon at the beach but we usually just grabbed a quick sandwich from the pool bar or (insider tip), had fresh pizza at the pizza bar next to the stage they hold the night-time entertainment.
In your stay you also get 2 a-la-cart meals, 1 at the italian restaurant (it was great!) and 1 at the Ranchon.
We didn't do any excursions but we did venture down to Palya SIrenna (a stunning beach) on the free train that runs 3 times a day from the resort to the beach. The free buffet there was very good as well.
We keep going back to Cayo Largo because it is a value that you just can't beat.
The resort is clean, the pool/beach perfect and the people, I now consider friends.
Daviel made sure we wanted for nothing and made our stay perfect.
We have found our home.
We will be back!

Just back from a relaxing vacation at Starfish. It was a very quiet time to go to the island, which was perfect for us. The people in Cuba always make the vacation so much better and the staff at Cayo Largo was no different. We were greeted with a welcome party and quickly checked in. Our flight arrived at 10am and it was very quick to go through security and be directed to a bus for less than a 10-minute drive to the resort. While they are still recovering from the pandemic and activities were reduced, the staff went out of their way to make sure every need was met with a smile. The rooms are small and ours did have a smell of sewage at times, but it was clean and had a wonderful patio. We were provided with a large bottle of water each day when our room was cleaned. Our room was in the 49 block directly on the beach. It was quiet and close to everything. There were several butlers who were assigned to specific blocks and were available at any time to answer questions, address concerns and provide information throughout our stay (Yadien was fantastic!). The snack bar at the pool had amazing bartenders who gave Spanish lessons and served up great coffee and cocktails with a laugh and smile. The food was plentiful, with no shortages. Cuba isn't known for its food but there was always a variety of things to suit everyone. Highly recommend the Cuban tour, which included the marina, turtle sanctuary, and a visit to a traditional Cuban home with a meal. There is a trolly available to take you to the other beaches on the island, Sirena and Pariso. Food and drinks are included while you are there. The trolly is a bit of a rollercoaster and there is an option to take a taxi for about $2 per person. Do not miss out on a visit to the beach! Starfish seemed to have the only beach of all the resorts where you could actually have a beach chair and swim. Due to erosion after hurricanes, the beaches aren't as big as they used to be. We also had high winds so we spent more time at the pool than at the beach. The pool wasn't large but, as it was quiet, there was no issue getting a chair and umbrella. Overall, the resort delivered what we were looking for in a relaxing vacation and we hope to return!

Just came back from a 7 day trip and overall it was a super good vacation experience,
The room was cleaned daily spotless! Everything in the room worked and the water was warm. Our maid Esmeralda did an excellent job everyday and we couldnt ask anything more of her and our room. We were in the 4400 block and there was no noise we were able to sleep comfortable whenever.
The staff around the resort were all happy to serve. Starfish is very lucky to have such hardworking staff.
Our butler Daviel was very professional but personable he always made sure we were happy and having a good stay and made himself available if we needed anything. Having a butler was so nice rather than chasing down a staff member.
Monica from Sunwing was always available in the Sunwing hut and answered any questions we had and assisted with setting up excursions.
The food and drinks were good there was alot of variety and freshly made. There is something for everyone. There was fresh fruit daily and water was always available.
The pizzeria was our favourite the guys that worked there were super friendly.
There was a show in the lobby every night and a few nights there were events in the local marina like the "white party" .
The wifi was good it was spotty in the room but around the resort it was good and strong.
Almost everyday we went to Sirena Beach by taxi or train and it so beautiful and there was food/chairs/boat rides included. Sirena beach employee Niaomi was super helpful with any requests we had and always had a welcoming smile on her face.
The Cayo Largo airport staff/process was very fast and smooth.
The weather was nice all week and we never ran into any problems.
If you are going bring bills (cad/usd) not coins as tips! Also bugspray/afterbite!
We will definitely return soon!

The Starfish Cayo Largo offers great value for money. We don't lack anything essential - except for beer lovers who have to endure the frequent "back-orders" in the buffets and restaurants of the place. The beach is heavenly, there is always a wind which protects us from heatstroke, and the staff on site are generally friendly and helpful (for the most part). The service is therefore very good, and each accommodation unit on site is managed by a butler. The person in charge of my unit (4200 - ocean view), Daury, was particularly helpful and friendly.
In short, I recommend the Starfish Cayo Largo for those who are not primarily looking for great luxury, but simply a welcoming, clean and relaxed place, where it is good to spend a week to forget the gray weather and regenerate with vitamin D and in the salty air, while eating very well (excellent fish!) in the few dining areas offered on the site. For those who like long walks on the beach, this is also the dream place! In short, we are not in luxury, and in some rooms the air conditioning and the fridge are noisy (I turned them off during the night), but it is clean and bright. In summary, the essentials are there, including some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!!

Cost is free, only extra charge is food and drinks if you want to purchase on the beach
I have been to both. Memories is visually more appealing with their landscape. Their pool is nice, winding and has a quiet pool. Starfish has a nicer beach area, it's wider than Memories. Some days at Memories you won't be able to get on the beach. So for that reason I prefer Starfish.
