I reviewed this hotel a year ago. It has recently been taken over by Alex and Rachel and their family who have moved out from Warrington. On our recent visit, David, the previous owner, was assisiting as a very capable waiter to give some continuity and advise to the new patrons. It is clearly going to be a huge learning curve for Alex and Rachel and I will be keen to revisit and see how they are doing. What a beautiful place to live and what a wonderful opportunity - I wish them all the best!

My friends and I enjoyed the excellent hospitality of David and Sylvia. The rooms were light, modern and very clean - the beds extremely comfortable. We had an excellent and very relaxed meal in the beautiful restaurant and the views were stunning. I certainly hope to return for a longer stay to explore Mirepoix and the surrounding area

The medieval towns of Mirapoix and Carcassonne had been recommended as places not miss whilst visiting the Pyranees this summer. I came across the web site of Auberge du Balestie whilst researching the area on the net and took contact details with us.
David and Sylvia could not have been more welcoming as we just literally turned up on the doorstep. The rooms have all been recently decorated, are well appointed and good value for money. Breakfast needed to be ordered as the rolls and croissant are freshly baked on the premises each morning. A fair selection of restaurants are available a five minute drive away in Mirepoix but we ate three out of five nights in their own restaurant. The set meal was prepared to a very high standard and reasonably priced. David served the best house wine we found all holiday!
The location of the Auberge is excellantly placed for touring the area with stunning views across to the mountains during the day but do take a moment to look at the sky on a clear night. With little or no light pollution the stars were a stunning spectacle I have seen in only far more exotic locations.

I am not often ashamed to be British but I was here. The British couple who own/run it clearly have no idea! The whole place looked run down and tatty. Rooms are awful and the bar / restaurant no better. A few flowers in pots outside and the area surrounding the hotel tidied up would make a great difference.

Response from aigrette, Propriétaire at Auberge du Balestie
Responded 23 Aug 2011
We were very sorry to read this review. The comfort and enjoyment of our guests is obviously tremendously important to us and clearly we fell short of expectations on this occasion. Our neighbour's property, part of which can easily be mistaken as our own, has been rendered and painted and the outside area, which comes up to our restaurant has been greatly tidied up since the reviewer's visit, which has made a big difference. We do actually have over 100 plants in 10 different areas around the hotel, but quite agree that more would be even better and we do plan to action this. We have a number of improvements scheduled for this autumn/winter both inside and outside, which will further enhance the appearance. Regarding my wife and I having no idea, we think that we are actually quite brilliant, but don't take our word for it, please read other reviews and come and see for yourselves!

Beautiful, tranquil setting, great centre for touring. Room, clean and adequately furnished. Good shower etc. Only complaint is arrangement for breakfast. This is a continental breakfast, which for some reason needs to be booked the day before. For example we requested breakfast at 08.10 one morning and were happy to wait as breakfast continued till 09.30, but were told we couldn't have any as we hadn't booked the night before! This doesn't make for a relaxed flexible start to the day.Don't know if we were unlucky but we shared our room with a family of little black ants!

We had a fantastic holiday at the Auberge du Balestie. The food was wonderful, we had excellent meals every night. David and Sylvia are great hosts. It was great to be able to walk out of our bedroom and join the GR7 walking route, which runs past the hotel. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, as is the nearby lake. The views of the Pyrenees from the hotel are stunning.

As a family attending a local wedding we stayed for 3 nights on B&B. Views from rooms and from the patio are stunning. We were there in a 38 degree heatwave and the rooms were stifling, even with a fan. Alex was knowlegable and helpful in recommending things to do in the area and he very kindly made it possible for us to watch a Lions rugby game! However we were disappointed in the Auberge facilities. There was no communal area or bar to get water or cold drinks or even to sit and talk and socialise as a family after 10 pm when the place seemed to get closed and locked up. Breakfast was adequate but basic and expensive at Eu8 per person. Recommend Mirepoix, Carcassonne and MontBel lake.

Response from Alex S, Owner at Auberge du Balestie

Many Thanks for your review. Yes the weather in June was exceptionally hot which is not the norm, on your arrival at midnight we provided fans to your group to help reduce the heat as best we could and also provide large bottles of chilled water. On the second day, we arranged taxis for you to ensure you got to the restaurant on time. We have a bar and restaurant where our other guests dined with us throughout your stay, and to confirm we were still serving beyond 10pm. We are confused as to why you have said that we were shut at 10pm, perhaps you were on `UK time. We had guests in the restaurant/bar up until 11:30pm, as we were having a lovely chat with them. Rare are the days we have an opportunity to be shut at 10pm. As all our guests had left the bar/restaurant and gone to bed, we had assumed you were continuing your evening out, if you had mentioned to us earlier, that you were going to be late and would like to sit in the bar on your return we would have welcomed that. In terms of breakfast it is continental and is excellant value for 8 euros per person which includes a filter coffee, hot chocolate, a good selection of teas, baguettes and croissants, natural yogurt, a selection of fruit yogurts, good quality muesli, cornflakes, cheese, ham, fresh jams, also a selection of other jams, fresh fruit and fruit juice. The feedback from the majority of our clients is that it is a plentiful amount and good value. We hope you received your item that you left here, which we posted at a cost of 26 euros. We are very welcoming and it is a shame as we could have easily avoided your disappointment, if you had just informed us.

Stayed here for 5 nights in September. Very quite place as it is set back from the main road. Ideal setting for exploring Carcassonne to the north, Mirepoix, and also just over an hour to Quillan and Axat with it's Red Train. The footpath for the 5 mile walk to Mirepoix start just outside the back door. Alex and Rachel were excellent hosts who have plenty of advice on what to do in the area. Evening meals and local wines were available if you want to eat in. Rooms are basic but clean and we had good views towards the Pyrenees.

Stayed three nights here as my cousin was getting married nearby. Nothing bad to say about this place.. Super quaint, peaceful place.. Very serene.

Alex and Rachel were the friendliest hosts. Wonderful view of Pyrennees and the lovely medievel town of Mirepoix is 7-8 minutes away by car.

Breakfast was also super yummy! Had one of best croissants on my trip to France.

Calm, relaxing fabulous views and friendly people. Great welcome from warm and efficient new owners Alex and his wife. Everything works, the beds are really comfortable and it is superbly quiet. Very good breakfasts. Haven't tried the restaurant for dinner, but it smelled good. Very good base to explore the Cathar country and Carcassonne. Nearby historic village of Mirepoix is beautiful. Good walks right on the doorstep. We will come here again!
