What an excellent introduction to our very first but not last experience to a Onsen. Was totally blown away by the Immaculately kept and serene atmosphere of the Gardens, the private kaiseki dinner and the massage chairs in both the lounges. For a truly immersive experience, book 2 nights. Our 3 pm arrival and 9 am departure meant we could only enjoy a fraction of the hospitality on offer. Its a sublime experience being able to soak in the warm waters of the Onsen in the privacy of our room knowing its 1 degree C outside.
Having said that, this hotel is not without its blindspots as pointed out in other reviews, so please moderate expectations. That being said, we still enjoyed ourselves and shall cherish the memories

We stayed here in January 2023. It was AMAZING> really great for a one night quick trip from Tokyo. Were so close to Fuji with great views of it - clouds did obscure it for a while but that is nature - we had a private onsen and it was heavenly. Soaking in that watching Fuji from the hottub was wonderful. Felt very out of time there. Similar vibe in the rooms, some tatami rocking it with 80s boardroom aesthetics. I liked the mix. We had the kaiseki meal in room which was delicious and a treat and the kids loved their version of kaiseki which included a triple plated feast complete with Japanese food layer and a burger layer. They ate it all. We used the public onsens too - it was boys day for the rooftop and we girls got the basement one, beautiful gardens around the indoor / outdoor onsen and so nice to introduce young daughter to public bathing at Fuji no less! The drum show at nighttime was excellent too, all in all a great hotel to quickly dip into some of the more traditional japanese culture.

We spent a night in this hotel. The check in was very smooth. One thing I didn’t like is I have to wait for their shuttle for very very long time. It was actually the bus shuttle that cause us to miss to see the full Fuji mountain before the cloud starts to cover the mountain. Plus it was the bus’ fault that cause us to miss a lot of intro greeting and their garden experience. People should get there in the morning and really experience that whole day of this hotel can give you since their bus shuttle runs slow and delay.

Due to our travel timings, we arrived at the hotel at 7pm. On our way to the hotel, the receptionist actually called us at 6pm to tell us they are closing check-ins. I have never heard of any hotel in the world that closes check-in? Guests travel from all over the world, how can we ensure no flight delays to arrive at the hotel by 6pm Japan time?

When we arrived at the hotel, the receptionists were therefore really pissed at us for arriving past 6pm. They gave a black face despite our apologies (although I still don't understand how any hotel can close check-in) and did not respond with any courtesy. When we asked for extra amenities in the room as I am travelling with my baby, the "butler" showing us to the room rolled her eyes. I can't even believe this.

Breakfast in the hotel was a terrible experience. We received racist treatment, just short of chasing us out of the hotel. When we left the hotel, the receptionists at the lobby couldn't be bothered to thank us and say goodbye. What a stuck up and racist hotel! But I noticed they treated Japanese guests with courtesy at Breakfast and also at the reception. Really terrible racist hotel.

Oh and please take note: the hotel floor and carpet has some dirt or bugs of some sort that made me itch like crazy and I came back with legs full of scars.

Hotel Kaneyamaen is a large mass market hotel. Huge lobby area and "bus station" feel.

Bessho Sasa opened only a year ago is conceptualised as a traditional ryokan on the 4th and 5th floors of the hotel. There is an Executive lounge. Not fancy but adequate with juices and tea with some Japanese cookies and cakes. Here you can checkin and checkout and so there is no need to stop at the main lobby reception. The receptionist Miss Kobayashi had limited English but is the most helpful person you can find. Gentle, polite and very professional. She rushed our laundry even though there was no service on the day we were there. Got it done and well cleaned and packaged.

The room is japanese western with moving screens around the bedroom, entrance area, dining room and bathroom. When opened the room is bright and cheery and reasonably large. When screens are closed, it gives enough privacy and cosiness.

The beauty of the place is to see Mt Fuji from the window and from the private onsen. The two days we were there Mt Fuji showed off its beauty with pride.

Dinner was served in the room. Miyuki our server was attentive, helpful and a lovely person.Food was delicious and very well presented.

Breakfast for Bessho Sasa guests is served in the Harmony Room which faced a beautiful garden. Great food!

Definitely recommend this if you want to see Mt Fuji in all its glory and yet have a great experience of a good class ryokan.

Bessho Sasa is part of the fame Hotel Kaneyamean, which is consistently listed as one of the top 10 onsen resort in Japan. Hotel Kaneyamean converted level 4 and 5 into their premium floors, where every suite has private onsen overlooking the majestic Mt. Fuji, and they named in Bessho Sasa. There is a separate reception cum concierge counter at Level 4 and a private 24 hours lounge for the guests of Bessho Sasa, is like the executive lounge of the western hotels.

Bessho Sasa is 2 years old and hence the furnitures are relatively new. They were celebrating second year anniversary when we were there and gave us a bottle of nice locally brewed sparkling wine.

The access to the hotel is very convenient for self travellers as they have free hotel shuttle from both Fujisan and Lake Kawaguchi train station. However, you have to ask the tourist information counter at either station to call the hotel and wait for the shuttle.

Comparing to some great onsen resorts that we have stayed, Hotel Kaneyamean and Bessho Sasa is something different, it has so many facilities that staying a night is not enough.

Hotel Kaneyamean has 3 public onsens. The roof top onsen (level 10)where you can see the iconic Mt Fuji right in front of you is the most popular and crowded one. Another two onsens located at lower ground floors and less crowded.

The main attraction of the hotel is the huge private Japanese garden of the hotel, it is very nicely maintain and also have a natural river inside and linked to a path to the hill at the back of the hotel. The Japanese garden and it's tea house alone already worth the stay. The Japanese tea ceremony is free for the guests.

There is a also an outdoor swimming pool and a church within the compound.

At night, they will be Japanese drum show follow with game of Bingo.

As the guest of Bessho Sasa, our dinner was served in the room, the food and service was top class.

The breakfast is located at one of the restaurant in lower ground and I must say that it is so far the best selection of Japanese buffet of all the nice Japanese hotels that I have stayed before.

Hotel Kaneyamean is mainly targetted local tourists and company events and hence it can be crowded. However, due to the size of the hotel and Japanese etiquette you can still very comfortable. Staying at Bessho Sasa given us the best of both world, we can have our privacy by soaking in our private onsen, and also access to all other facilities that hotel Kaneyamean has.

This "ryokan" is part of bigger hotel, and occupies the 4th and 5th floor of the structure. The hotel part reminds a lot of budget, mass-tourism hotels in Japan, but the "ryokan" part is amazing. The rooms are new and a great mix of modern and old traditional style. The bed are comfortable, the bathroom and shower amazing, and of course the private open bath with view over Fuji mountain just amazing. The dinner was probably one of the best I have ever had in Japan, with incredible private service in excellent English. The japanese garden is also very pretty, and in general it was an amazing experience. The cost is a bit high, but I think it was worth for once. The only minus was the breakfast room, that looked quite dated and not so special, but even there the food quality was amazingly high. So in general I would indeed recommend to spend a night here.

This is my 4th onsen experience in Japan and by far this time is the most expensive with the least hospitality from Japanese hot spring hotel experience. Yes I’m disappointed! We booked 1 night at their Bessho SASA level which considered to be the upper scale portion of the hotel with private outdoor hot spring and in room dinning/breakfast. Upon checking in there were 6-7 female staff at the entrance bow to us to welcome us. At first glance I felt welcomed with lots of respect but when I took a deeper look, they all looked sad and like unwilling to bow once their head shows up after bowing, I mean they don’t have to do that if they don’t want to. It’s even worse for me to see the scene. Before bedtime, my toddler son needed a glass of milk in order to go to sleep, we went down to the lobby with 2 young children asking if we can get any milk for them, lobby staff showed us where the vending machine were, however milk is out of stock at the moment. Then he lead us to their bar lounge and spoke in Japanese to the staff there telling them the vending machine is out of milk and we needed milk, the bartender pour 2 cups of milk and we were ready to pay, they have a nerve to charge us 1300 yen for 2 cups, it only cost 100-150 yen at the vending machine and I immediately told them it’s too much, the bar manager said because it’s a bar lounge, we went down in our yutaka to get milk for the toddler, we obviously not planning to sit in the lounge to drink it at the bar, I mean we are not asking for free and is willing to pay, I think they are too greedy about that and not even being sensitive and considerate. In this hotel, if you stayed at Bessho SASA level, you were completely different color of yutaka than other hotel guest, I felt they just try to rip us off because we were wearing that yutaka (the bar manager just handwritten a bill for 1300 yen like he can make up any price for the milk).
At check out, they don’t even have any staff to wave us good bye when our bus left which is my 1st time not having this treatment. All the previous 3 onsen hotel would wave goodbye when we leave, this makes Japanese hospitality so outstanding.

There is a massage chair for Bessho SASA guest use at an exclusive lounge, I went there after mid night and the minute I started the machine, an Asian guy walked up to me and look up to my face (the chair is facing window) like to make sure I know he will be waiting for me to finish. Okay fine but I already started and the default cycle is 15 mins so he just need to wait til I’m done. He just sit on the sofa at the back of the massage chair and continuously message his friends back and forth with a very loud notification on, how can I relax my only 15 mins there??? My point is the hotel guest quality is also in big question.
In conclusion, the room and meal itself are good. I’m highly disappointed by the lack of hospitality in this hotel because it is the most important reason we travel to Japan. It cost us $1,022 for 1 night and total of 7 hrs round trip commute time from Tokyo to enjoy this hotel, we deserve better.

After reading all the good reviews of this roykan we were pretty excited to see it. Indeed the roykan is nice modern because only 2 floors are roykan and the rest are hotel rooms. We were a party of 3 adults( our daughter and husband) we had western beds but it was a little cramp for 3 beds but the room was not small, about 28 m. There was nice shower and an out-door hot pool in the room. It has a good view of Mt. Fuji, we were so blessed with 2 beautiful clear days and the sight of Mt. Fuji was simply awesome. Worth every cent, the dinner was in the room which was a nice experience, didn't have to leave the room . At 8.30pm there's a drum performance not to be missed, at the lobby. There's a nice small lounge with self service to coffee and tea, some wine before 6pm and there is a massage chair free of charge. Nice touch. Overall very satisfied. When we arrived at the Fujisan Station from Haneda Airport, we went to the Information Center and got the staff to call the hotel to come pick us up. Please ask for direction to the pick up point, just wait and the transport will arrive to pick you.

We hired a taxi through our travel agent to take us there and back. It's a bit pricey, but the best option if you have a lot of luggage as we did. A taxi is inevitable anyway from the bus or train station. Sorry not to be of more help.

This may seems late... but all rooms are covered with wood shields but if guests wanna peeped over, they can stand on the higher level and inch out their bodies to take a closer look.
