Plus points
1) checkin was fast and staff accommodative - helped us to call and book dinner at Otaru
Helped us to find a sewing kit
2) Rooms were big , wifi fast . One huge bottle of water was provided
3) Dinner restaurant ambience was fairly good - did not feel like eating in a canteen
4) Dinner variety was adequate with the delicious chirashi don and pizza and ice cream
5) Onsen had a shampoo bar - however the bar was placed at the wrong place near the entrance. You really needed to collect the dispensed shampoos in cups before you entered otherwise after the soak , how did one collect them naked ? It would have been a better idea to leave the shampoos on a rack in the bathing area . Hence the shampoo bar was like a showpiece but not practical.
6) Parking was free but located 100 m away .
7) The illuminated tunnel was just opposite the hotel. There was also a 711 next to the tunnel
Negative points
1) Rooms toilets were very small
Beds were a tad soft & one pillow given
Noise insulation quite poor
Furniture old and outdated
2) Dinner was good but had to queue for water !
Would have been better if more water dispensers were provided .
3) Breakfast was average .
3) Onsens - the top level one faced the lake but because of the hotel location , the view of Nakajima island was not in the centre but to one side
The basement onsen’s view was partially blocked by steel scaffoldings .

Western Style room with great views of the Island and toward Mount Usa. Comfortable for sleeping but the bathroom was quite squashed. Fortunately I made good use of both Onsen facilities throughout my stay, Which had better showers than the room.
Overall a good experience.

There is a convenience store right in front of the hotel. There was 1.5L of water in the refrigerator in the room.
One of the two baths, "Hoshi no Yu," was very nice. The quality and temperature of the hot springs were good, and you could enjoy the hot springs while looking at the spectacular view of Lake Toya. The other bath, "Tsuki no Yu," is on the first floor, so you cannot see Lake Toya. You can enjoy a cypress bath while looking at the garden. This bath has a cold bath with water from Lake Toya, and if I had time, I would have liked to take a sauna. Men and women switch between night and morning, and women went to "Hoshi no Yu" at night. Since I stayed here for the hot springs, I went to the baths a few times, but there was always a cleaning person there to keep the changing room and powder room clean, which made the beautifully designed space even more comfortable to use. (When I called out to the cleaning person who was always busy whenever I went, he said that he always thought about making sure that everyone was comfortable.) The lemon water in the changing room was also very delicious. By the way, there was a draft beer barrel and cups in the changing room at "Hoshi no Yu," so maybe you can have a drink in the changing room?
When I planned my trip, the hotel was fully booked and I couldn't make a reservation, so I quickly found a vacancy a few days before and made a reservation. There was no vacancy this time, so next time I would like to stay in a room facing the lake.

The bedside light doesn't work at all.
The large public bath is large and not crowded.
The temperature of the outdoor bath is not stable, it is either too low or too hot to enter.
There is no temperature control at all.
The restaurant has a wide variety of menus, but all the staff are awful.
The service is worse than that of a family restaurant.
I ordered a drink, picked up my food and returned to my seat, but the drink had not arrived.
When I asked the staff, they were all new foreigners who couldn't understand Japanese.
I explained that it was not coming, but they did not understand.
In the end, I had to find a Japanese staff member and complain to them.
And the worst thing is that no one apologized.
Even after that, when I ordered a refill from my smartphone, it was said to be out of stock.
What is the point of electronic ordering? I don't understand it at all.
Everyone at the tables around me was complaining about the same thing.
If it's like this, it would be better to stop the half-hearted staff service and make it completely self-service.
Well, I'll never use it again.

However, this is hardly a quiet, chillout ryokan. One has to put up with loud tour groups and families. This is a huge hotel, so hundreds of one-night only guests descend on it. Hence the buffet restaurant resembled a feeding frenzy and yes, avoid the onsen till most people go to bed.
Despite all these, the hotel deserves 4 stars and our admiration for putting its best foot forward, day after day!

"There are 2 onsens. The B1/F is for gentlemen in the evenings and then 8/F in the mornings. Both onsens are unique, but 8/F is the best."Read full review
