My family and I were lucky enough to enjoy three amazing nights in the beautiful castle where my children were literally treated like a prince and princess! The staff could not have done anymore for them between dinner in the cinema, treats in their room everytime we returned and the most lovely babysitter looked after them very safely one night while we crept out for dinner. The adults had a ball too eating and drinking delicious food and fabulous drinks, learning all about the stunning falcons in the falconry school and getting to see the wonderful Lough Corrib boat trip on a beautiful Irish summer day. Covid has been hard on everyone but having a staycation in Ashford has certainly been a positive ti take from it!
Ashford Castle is a special place which offers a breathtaking location, immaculate grounds, the warmest of welcomes and wonderfully comfortable bedrooms & public spaces. However, it’s the hotel’s people that bring all of this together into a rare expression of Irish hospitality that lingers in the memory. They even arranged lovely weather!
If I had one complaint to make about our stay in Ashford Castle, it’s that we had to leave when our stay was over ;( . We spent 4 fabulous nights there this month with our 10 and 12 year old and it was truly amazing. And not just amazing for Ireland, but world class. I’m always a bit worried going to somewhere this high-end and remote that the kids won’t fit in, or enjoy themselves, but it truly felt like a luxury home from home. And that’s down to the staff really. They remembered us by name, chatted at length with the kids about what activities they had done, or what books they were reading. (A big thank you to Emma in the George V restaurant, Thomas who served afternoon tea, Edel and everyone else who looked after us. ) The range of activities on site for the kids (and us!) was fab. We managed to fit in horse riding, archery, tree climbing, zip wire, a boat trip, falconry, swimming in the pool, snooker, biking, meeting the wolfhounds etc etc. Some of these activities were provided by separate entities - Ashford outdoors, and the Falconry School. And the staff there were equally lovely. And as for the the food….. I don’t think we realised how much we missed fantastic food and wine in a luxury setting. But Ashford made up for it in spades, and in particular the George V restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble - the kids in particular ordered off menu on occasion and no one blinked an eye. Also, one afternoon, I thought my 10 year old was at risk of becoming hangry after all the activities, and dinner was a while off, so my husband asked for a banana to keep him going. A short while later, one of the staff delivered a whole bunch - they had popped to the shop to get fresh ones for him. Now that’s just exceptional service. And those bananas bridged gaps for my son on several occasions over our stay - so we were genuinely glad of them!. COVID protections were in place but discreet. For example, getting the pool to ourselves as a family because of COVID wasn’t exactly a hardship! Mask wearing indoors was the norm etc and there were options to chose to have staff clean or do turndown in your room or not, as you preferred. All giving that sense of security. Rooms were lovely, beds super comfy. Little cinema with its daily treats looked fab, and great for a rainy day (although we were blessed not to see any rain during our stay). We didn’t leave the grounds from the day we arrived - why would you need to? All in all, it was just perfect. And we will be back.…
Unbelievable location between Lough Corrib and the Cong River. Incredible scenery and nature - and then an amazing hotel with brilliant staff. True 5 star experience. Like many old castles like this …. the rooms represent that it’s an old house. The reception areas and grounds are what makes it. Really great job. Many of the staff have been here for decades. Amazing!
From the genuine welcome at the gate to breathtaking interior Ashford Castle leads in every possible way. They know how to make each guest feel genuinely welcome in the opulent surroundings. The decor reaches a high level of perfection in all the public areas, the bedrooms are superb in their attention to detail detail but it is the staff who raise the experience to the highest possible level. Outstanding Michelin star level cuisine, delivered with the warmest caring service. It is all sincere, every member of staff giving their best. All I can do is congratulate them and carefully place the voucher I have just bought for a definite return visit, in my suitcase. An Unforgettable experience.
