Le Grand Bassin is the most picturesque BnB our group of women has ever seen. This is the epitome of French charm. The rooms are well accommodated as is the common area. The view of the canal and Castelnaudary is beautiful. The outdoor area is landscaped and furnished beautifully. Then there is Sophie, who manages the place with energy and a dedication to her guests. It was sad to say goodbye.

The le Grand Bassin in Castelnaudry is a charming old stone house with several rooms. Our room was upstairs facing out at the lake, or port, the Grand Basin. We could see the cathedral across the water from our room and it was a short walk over to the bridge into town. The hostess, Sofie, is very helpful. She has excellent wines for sale, and you should try the red from her parent’s co-op.
You have to unplug lamps to plug in for phones, the table surfaces are mostly used for decoration so you need to move things around yourself. The WiFi was spotty, breakfast was serve yourself but OK. Bathroom was clean, shower OK, hair dryer provided.

We booked this on the strength of previous reviews on this site and at first glance this B&B on the banks of the Grand Bassin is not particularly prepossessing. However, afterwards we agreed that this was probably the best B&B that we stayed in enroute from Bilbao across the south of France to Le Marche, Italy. It is well decorated, with unfussy and good quality furnishings. The bed was on the firm side and so very comfortable for us. The room was spacious and, as with the ensuite, very clean. The ensuite was small with a shower cubicle but contained all the necessary items. We enjoyed the simple continental breakfast which was included in the price. Our hosts were relaxed and genial. A short walk aliong the path leads to a bridge across the canal to 3 restaurants and a wine 'cave'. We paid 65 euros in cash.

We booked 4 rooms via email with Gilles and I sent the requested deposit from Australia. He had said if too much trouble to transfer don't worry, which I thought was very trusting of him. We flew to Toulouse and then took a fast train to Castelnaudary . Le Grand Bassin, which is a lovely, old typically French house was less than a10 min walk from the station. We were met by our hosts and offered a drink which we sat in the garden and drank before being shown to our rooms The rooms were beautifully clean, nicely furnished and all had ensuite showers. Gilles had recommended and booked for us a local bar/restaurant which specialised in cassoulet, which was actually "invented" in Castelnaudary. We all slept like logs and met up for a typical French breakfast in the really nice dining room in the morning. We had booked 4 bicycles from a local company to cycle to Narbonne and then return to Castelnaudary by train. Gilles had kindly agreed to look after our bags while we were away for 5 days and for the hire company to collect their bikes from his house on our return as well as giving us the space to change clothes etc. His wife met us on our return gave us all a beer to drink and we had to force the money on her to pay for them. The 4 of us thought they were both delightful and charming hosts and their chambre d'hote a great place to stay.

We booked for a bicycle holyday at the Canal du Midi. When we arrived we saw a messy house and kitchen, checked the balcony room.. .and after 10 minutes we decided not to stay and left this B&B:
Poor in all aspects. We were lucky to found, the very same day, a splendid hotel in Carcassonne (La Bastide de St. Martin - Montredon) where we experienced a great value for money stay.
If you are looking for value and comfort you better avoid Le Grand Bassin.

We booked two rooms at this gorgeous bed and breakfast right on the Canal du Midi's Grand Bassin in Castelnaudary. Camille, the owner, was an absolute delight and shared some of her house smoked duck. It was absolutely divine. She accommodated our every need and we really enjoyed having wine and conversation with her and her friend in the living room after dinner. We would definitely stay here again!

We chose this B&B to stay the night before we took out a boat from the Le Boat base next door. It is a typical French house with the charming interior belying the rather plain exterior and superbly located by the Canal du Midi. The rooms were spacious, decorated with a rustic French theme, comfortable beds, minimal storage space, clean modern en-suites with good size shower cubicles and lovely views of the canal basin. Camille was very welcoming and came out to greet us and recommended and booked a good nearby restaurant for our evening meal of cassoulet. We enjoyed breakfast 'en famille' with a group from South Africa who were also going boating. Camille kindly allowed us to leave our luggage in her hall until late afternoon, while we explored Castelnaudary and was very helpful. Excellent value for money and a very well located and friendly place to stay.

We (my wife and me) found this place by coincidence and where more than delighted. Camille took over this Chambres D'Hotes some weeks ago and is a wonderful host. Since she worked in London for a while she is perfect in English. The room we stayed was very nice and had a view on the harbor. At night it is peaceful and quite. The garden gives room to rest and sit. The breakfast is very personal with home-made jams. We had the view that in Castelnaudary are only a few decent places to stay. This is one of the best!

This b&b is perfectly situated right on Le Grand Bassin on the Canal du Midi. There is plenty of parking space and a short walk along the canal brings you to some waterside restaurants and the town itself. The grand bassin is very picturesque and the canal a wonderful place to walk along. Rooms in the b&b are spacious and well-equipped and, although the breakfast is fairly basic, the value for money is exceptionally good.

We booked this b&b after reading reviews on Trip Advisor, and while the location was perfect for us, close to the Le Boat office, it was a little way out of town. We were also very disappointed with the host Gilles. He was so grumpy, we felt we were intruding on his space (in fact, he said as much!). Maybe we got him on a bad day. His wife was lovely and went out of her way to make us feel welcome, but we were glad we only had one night here before we left on our Le Boat adventure.
