Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is frequently commended for its hospitable and professional service, despite occasional disorganization. Guests appreciate the well-appointed and cozy rooms, although some feel the hotel could benefit from revitalization.
While praised for its cleanliness and excellent golf amenities, including a pristine pool and generous breakfast, opinions on value for money are mixed, with many finding it expensive. The resort's atmosphere divides opinion, with a charming yet dated ambiance that some guests find less appealing.

Detailed Reviews
Great hotel, staff and amenities. Golf course and marshals were superb, nothing to much to worry about and the condition of the bourse was great. Enjoyed the happy hour and the food was first class.
Returning again in January 2020👏👏👏
Came across and stayed here again the last week in January 2020 for a week and 6 rounds of golf on The Championship Course. From the very start the service from the bell boy to the front of house staff was excellent. Went to our rooms with the help of the bellboy with our bags and clubs. Room was excellent, view of the mountains was good and the preperation of the room was excellent. Linen was immaculate. Whilst on this subject the housekeeping staff did everything you could ask for and were superb. There were 4 of us in all and they all said the same. Food at breakfast was special and you could have anything you wanted, just ask and it was supplied. Food in the main resaurant and Club area was first class and reasonable priced. The bar and staff were first class and well turned out. There was nothing detrimental to say about any one of the staff members, they all went out of there way to assist you in your needs. The service on the patio was second to none. The staff in the pro shop were great along the staff in the starters hut. The course was in excellent condition with the flag positions being changed 3 times per week. The staff working on the cours whilst you were playing were very considerate and allowed you priority on the course. The course marshall was superb in sorting out problems on the course and also the mobile drinks/food buggy was good.
There was nothing to moan about regarding this hotel or the Golf Course, there was one thing that we thought could have been better implimented is that they should make sure that the handicaps are correct for those playing the Championship Course. There were several groups playing this course who's handicaps were incorrect or false. There were two days we played when we finished in excess of 60 minutes before the group following us finished. We heard one woman stating that she scored just one point over the last 6 holes!!
Anyway that did'nt spoil a good hotel or golf course. Thanks Penina see you January 2021. That will make 5 years out of the last 6 so we must like it!

Our first visit to Penina and it was not cheap, so we arrived with high expectations. The charming young man on Reception informed us that we had been upgraded to a Junior Suite. Hmmm. Our room was very small, with a "mezzanine" area which led onto the tiniest balcony I had ever seen - there was room for just two chairs, nothing else. In retrospect we should have immediately refused the room, declined the "upgrade" and asked for a standard room with a decent balcony.
There was no printed hotel information, just a very superficial information system on the tv, which provided none of the essential detail we needed as first timers at the hotel. Such as the need to book well in advance if we wished to have an evening meal in the hotel.
We discovered that our first choice restaurant - the Italian - was closed, ( in fact only a maximum of two of the four were open on any evening) so we enquired at Reception about the cost of a meal in the buffet restaurant . The Receptionist asked if we wanted to book a table, but we said we would choose a time and book later, something he didn't question. When we went back to book, we were told that the buffet restaurant was full and our only option was to eat in the a la carte Grill Restaurant. Not really what we wanted.
She then made a great show of "persuading" the Maitre d to fit us in.
The Grill Restaurant was in no way full. The food was good and well served, but even choosing the simplest menu choices, we ran up a bill in excess of 90 Euros when all we wanted was a light meal.
We didn't return, but on a couple of nights during our stay, the Grill Restaurant was actually the only option available for evening dining!!
In a 5* hotel I expected a high degree of service in our room, but although the towels were replaced daily, it was 4 nights before our bed linen was changed. Really not acceptable.
We learned that in a hotel normally staffed by 40 personnel, the hotel was running with a skeleton staff of just 17.
I have no complaints at all about the great team who looked after us so very well in the bars and restaurants. Also the charming man who looked after the swimming pool clearly took great pride in his work.
I will write a separate review about the two golf courses.

Dear jilldH6224US, We have read your views and opinions on tripadvisor further to your stay, and your comments about our services and facilities were shared with the Management team. This was your first visit, and unfortunately, we were not entirely able to meet your expectations. We sincerely apologize for this less positive first impression. May we clarify that the room allocated to you does have a smaller balcony, but offers wonderful views, from the 4th floor, over the golf course and swimming pool. Those are the studio rooms, and are more expensive than the classic or standard rooms. For a future visit, please kindly inform about us about your accommodation preferences, and instead of a studio, the team will ensure they allocate you a different type of room. Due to the pandemic the Hospitality Industry has implemented measures to minimize the risk of spreading the virus. One of the actions taken at Hotels was related to “points of contact”, and all written information was removed from the rooms. As an alternative, we have the Information menu on the TV, with room service menu, directory of services and local area information. Additionally, our Reception and Guest Relations are available to assist you. We regret to learn about some flaws related to the housekeeping service, and we are investigating with our housekeeping team what may have happened. Please accept our apologies. We feel honored when we read your observations about the staff that looked after you in the bars and restaurants, and also about the pool manager, who takes pride in his work. Many of those mentioned have been here for years, and truly do their best in providing great services. We hope that you will give us another opportunity to greet you at Penina. At our hotel, we are continuously looking to improve our overall services and guest’s satisfaction, therefore we would like to invite you to share your comments and preferences further with us at the following e-mail: penina@jjwhotels.com. Kind regards Guest Relations

Recently returned from a repeat holiday at Penina. Greeted like friends with staff so helpful.Room overlooking pool had great views, was roomy and well equipped with coffee machine daily water and a super balcony.
Set up for golf is ideal. Clubs stored for you and taken out by staff when you are about to play. All golf on site with the championship and Resort courses both in outstanding condition and when you change your shoes in men’s locker room they are cleaned and polished for next round !
Sagres restaurant food very good - breakfast outstanding. Henry Cotton food also good but needs to be more varied which I believe is happening. Grill restaurant very classy and rather special. Sadly Italian restaurant was closed during our stay as early in season but if it is open do visit.
As said a perfect golfing holiday hotel with super staff. And if you fancy a night out, Alvor and Portimao are only a short cheap taxi ride away

I have been going to Penina for over 12 years and have a family of four this is my review, this review is about my experience in July/August 2019 we stayed in a room and the first night we couldn't sleep because it was very noisy and we got moved the next day and I was an ok room is wasn't brilliant for the price we were paying we got breakfast every morning and it was nice as would go a get an omelette made right in front of us then we have fruit toast a coffee but you would to be going at half nine the latest before getting really busy after breakfast we went down to he pool as it was empty as we would always be the first there and last to leave you would give the lifeguards 4 cards and get our towels I wish we get 2 towels each next time because the towels are very small and might only fit half the sun bed the pool is nice and it is perfect for sun at lunch you have a chance of going to the Henry Cotton or the pool bar under 12's do it free but I had an 11 year old and they would take a card off before you and all the details of your room and I thought it was very unprofessional as they can go to reception and ask cause it's very annoying having to answer that every time you get the bill as my 11 year old isn't very happy aswell being asked that every time she has food! The service is ok maybe only one or to waitress are nice at the Henry Cotton as some wasn't as pleasant as I mean not very pleasant the food was nice but expensive the pool bar is ok as well. Water is expensive as well as 6 euro for one bottle of of water that's a litre. I have to say when you are in the Henry Cotton it is very nice looking out to a bit of the golf course and a lovely big green area with a big tree and then a tiny bit of the pool when you walk out of the hotel to go to pool, kids club, golf course etg . There is lovely outdoor couches looking out to the big tree with grass area great for kids to play. There is also a kids club and the helpers that work there are lovely!! In the kids clubs they have so many activities including golf lessons, tennis lessons and surfing. They have a bouncy caste there also a soccer/football pitch, a small baby pool, a little area with little cars aping pong table a pool table and they have colouring a little room with a tv a water pump so the kids can get water at anytime and also get a wristband a green one can enter and leave at he right time and red can't leave without parents and orange I can't remember. It is a lovely kids club then we have the Henry Cotton at night at is lovely and brings you some little small dishes and some sorbet before your dinner out of it all it is expensive and he hotel is a bit old fashion the rooms aren't great but there bathrooms are nice.

We found Penina Hotel and golf resort to be an ideal holiday destination for an end of year break (on a friend's recommendation,) where we were able to combine exercise by playing our golf on their Championship course, (which is challenging but after 3 days, we both had improved scores) and then relax every afternoon in the balmy sunshine on the balcony in our room overlooking the pool and garden.
What made the holiday for us was the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to tend to one's needs in every department, whether in reception, bar or restaurants, housekeeping or the service in the golf shop. Everyone was so helpful,no matter what our query or request was.
It is a beautiful, comfortable, spacious hotel to stay in with efficiency and attention to detail evident everywhere. Beds were ultra comfortable, rooms were spotless, air conditioning functioned to perfection and who could resist the chocolate truffle placed on our pillow every night?! We loved our stay here and would highly recommend it. We hope to return again in the near future. Mary & Joe from Ireland

We booked this hotel to replace our planned trip to the UK to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with family. We immediately noticed how very welcoming and efficient the staff are, they couldn’t have been more helpful throughout our stay, and this was noticeable throughout the hotel, including the golf course. Upon arriving in our room we were delighted to notice a bottle of champagne on ice along with some delicious snacks, including strawberries and chocolate. What a lovely surprise. Our only criticism is that the room was a little on the small size for a five star hotel, but it was comfortable, and the 25 euro per night supplement to have a balcony overlooking the beautiful pool and golf course was worth it. On the evening of our actual anniversary we ate in the hotel’s main Resturant. The food was delicious and the service excellent. For desert we were presented with a small cake, complete with candals (thankfully not 50!).
The championship golf course is challenging for most ‘club’ players but it is beautiful and it is nice to play on such a well established course, I think it was opened in 1966. The same high standard of service was experienced at the golf course. We arrived at the pro shop, booked in, and by the time we had changed into our golf shoes our golf buggy was waiting for us, already loaded with our golf bags.
All in all we would highly recommend this lovely hotel and we will certainly return in the future.

Well a group of us (8) in all travelled over the last week in January this year, something we have done for the past 6 years with the exception of the Co-vid pandemic. We stayed in 4 twin bedroom rooms overlooking the pool area, these rooms were excellent and were well serviced by the staff, changed the towels twice a day and anything else that needed changing. We stayed on a B/B format and this also included a meal in the Legril restaurant of which we were allowed to choose whatever we wanted including drinks to which the hotel paid €33 to each of us towards the cost of the evening. Food was excellent and cooked to order and served by well trained staff. Breakfast was good and there was more than enough to eat, either pre-cooked or made to order, eat what you wanted and however much you wanted. Sir Henry Cotton golf course was excellent for the time of year. The greens were first class and really true and exceedingly fast, the size of them was something else. Some pitch marks left by players in front of us who didn’t seem to bother, however we repaired them. Green staff were there every day making sure everything was ok. Bunkers were good and again people with small feet seemed not to like raking them. Fairways considering the traffic used were good but did need a bit if of attention. Tee’s need some work on them but was not a problem. People have mentioned the property needs updating, so does everything in the world so get on with it. We will certainly be visiting again next January to enjoy our stay here and playing an exceptional golf course. Staff were excellent and done everything you needed doing.

I’ve just returned from a 5 night golfing break, this is a great venue, really nice hotel, great golf course and only a short distance to Alvor.
I found the facilities in the hotel were excellent as was the breakfast
We usually went into Alvor for an evening meal and returned later to the main hotel bar
We would especially like to mention the bar manager Sophia, she was very friendly, happy and helpful, she recommended restaurants we could try. It was a pleasure to meet her and her colleagues Carlos and Milos, they are a credit to your hotel
I must say that the staff throughout the hotel were excellent, from the porters, front desk, waiters and room maids, nothing was too much trouble
The gardens around the hotel are wonderful and create the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing holiday
The golf facilities are first class, driving range, putting and chipping areas and 2 superb 18 and 9 hole courses
I recommend this for a great golf break
I look forward returning in the future

We have just spent 5 days at Penina. We have stayed here many times and I have to say it was the best we had experienced.
Firstly the golf. We only played the Championship course and it continued to be one of our favourites. The greens were immaculate, apart from the usual pitch marks on the greens left by inconsiderate golfers.
The general condition of the course was very good and considering the time of year was more than enjoyable. Great weather of course helped
Secondly the hotel. It was very quiet and the staff on reception and the doorman were extremely helpful and professional. The breakfast as always was great
We stayed in a Mountain view room and it was very comfortable. We normally take a Pool view room and the only improvement would have been the sun would have been beaming down on the balcony should we have taken the latter but it didn't detract from how comfy it was. Spotless clean with a fridge and ask for a kettle if you prefer tea. We don't drink coffee.
Now this was the best bit. We have never eaten in Le Grill restaurant as we always assumed it was a bit stuffy, it was relaxing and far from stuffy. However, as The Henry Cotton bar was closed for private parties we ate in Le Grill. Historic. The food was fantastic and Nelson , our waiter, could not do enough for us. The first evening they didn't have the wine I had ordered. He provided us with a great local alternative. On the 3rd and last time we ate there, he found the wine and as we sat down, the waitress said that Nelson had found us a bottle and it was open on our table. That's what I call first class service.
The prices were not that expensive either. For example:
Bottle of great Red, Bread Rolls, an appetiser, a main course, a couple of Portuguese tarts (no jokes please) and a glass of Port, was 88 euros all in. We went into Alvor and it was cheaper at the hotel and you didn't need to get a taxi or drive in.
In summary, this isn't a place for groups of young golfers who want to go on the lash and play golf like you would do at Vilamoura. It's charm is the hotel, peace and quiet and a great golf course, with superb food.
Thanks to everyone at Penina for making our stay perfect.

My first visit here was 34 years ago. At the time it was the most luxurious hotel I had stayed at. Since then I have stayed at hotels more worthy of the word luxurious and the label 5 star; the Fullerton Singapore, the Peninsula and the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong and the Langham in Melbourne to name a few. However, I have returned here 5 more times in that intervening period. Yes, the hotel could do with some renovation, some carpets in the general areas are threadbare but despite this the rooms, while simply decorated with white washed walls and the traditional red floor tiles, have had replacement bathrooms, new comfy beds and lovely crisp white linen and fluffy towels. If you want modern, minimalist and brand new then look elsewhere. If, like me, you enjoy exchanging stories with the 38 year veteran doorman, Carlos, about sharing the pool with Rocco and Charles Forte all those years ago, then this is the hotel for you. Chintzy chairs and sofas in the lounge but what can beat a glass of port and watching the sun go down over the magnificent pool? After 30 years of many visits to the Algarve coming here is a special treat and always feels like coming home. Apparently there are plans to refurbish and that would make Penina very special again.
I should add, in response to other comments, that we did not experience a 5pm check in. We arrived at 11am and told the room would be ready at 2pm which it was. We were offered the use of the golf changing rooms complete with towels and showers and Carlos stored our luggage while we went to the pool.
We relied on the hotel to book taxis for us as we found the Uber drivers had a nasty habit of cancelling the ride, presumably because they found an alternative fare nearer to their location.

Dear Repeated Guest, Thank you so much for your return and for taking the time to share your most recent experience with other travelers. To see returning guests year after year is very reassuring for the entire team, it is always nice to see familiar faces out and about the resort. Carlos our veteran doorman was overjoyed to learn of your kind mentioning and sends his regards. As testament to our strive, we assure you that an extensive plan for renovation is in the cards for the foreseeable future. We do our best to tackle situations around the resort whenever occupancy is low. We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back on your next visit to the Algarve.

Very little choice on lager superbock or superbock and expensive 5.50 a pint
There’s a timetable at reception but you have to book it. Our experience wasn’t great as the pick-up from the beach just simply didn’t arrive so we had to get a taxi instead.
