Detailed Reviews
Just spent a week at this nicely appointed resort and hotel in Sri Lanka. The large, clean rooms all offer beautiful views of the beach, on site restaurants are terrific with a wide variety of choices daily, nice gym and pool, lovely spa, and quick easy access to the beach with an abundance of surfing schools. However, the best of all is the staff. Every single encounter was superb. From housekeeping, wait staff, activities desk, fitness instructors, management - every person had a smile, helpful attitude and kind words. Especially friendly was Chef Roshan, who kindly offered a private Sri Lankan cooking class, and Chenuka the barista at the on-site cafe & bakery, who was happy to share his knowledge and love of Sri Lanka... and he makes a fantastic latte! Every day we felt like valued guests, and by the end of the week, we were sad to leave. This is a jewel of a location on the beautiful southern coast of a diverse, unique and special country. We will definitely return.

This is a beautifully located resort with all rooms overlooking the ocean, which was a an amazing view to wake up to.Food was so good but the most outstanding value is the extraordinary staff, especially Lakshitha, who made our stay very special with his excellent customer service. He is very talented & he made us special cocktails on request. One of the best Margaritas we’ve had, so be sure to try the Tides bar on your stay.
All staff was super hospitable, welcoming, helpful and professional. They did an excellent job that they couldn't be any more accommodating if they tried. Lovely pool with a uncommon landscape. Pool water is well maintained and the beach is always accessible, if you wanna go for a night walk.

Just returned from a 2 week stay at this hotel and we had an amazing time.
We stayed on the 2nd floor and was great waking up to the sound of waves everyday!
The room was clean and bed was comfortable and plenty of space although not lots of storage for clothes.
We had 3 days out of the hotel on a trip inland but the rest of our time was spent here.
The hotel is fantastic in general with a few things that left us giving it a 5star review.
1.Having to pay a supplement for fresh milk for tea and coffee in our room.
2.having to pay for bottled water around the pool when we are unable to drink the local water.
3. There seems to be different rules for different people depending on class, I.e reserving of breakfast tables outside, lying on the grass areas which was and wasn’t aloud.
In a 5 star hotel we wouldn’t be expected to pay for milk or water around the pool area but those things aside we think the hotel and location are great. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful and was easy to store my surfboard safe and securely for the time we were there.

My family spent two nights at this hotel. We always wanted to visit there but we never got time. We had a lot of high hopes as this is a property of a good hotel chain. Unfortunately, our experience was below par.
The room was spacious & we got it upgraded by paying extra at the check-in. It was the highest floor which was on the 10th floor and it had great view to the sea.
The staff was friendly & efficient from the very beginning as we entered the premises. We were given a small cake at the arrival to the room to celebrate our son's birthday. We had a concern dining at the restaurant with the baby & when we informed that to the front office, they were kind enough to serve the food to the room which we selected from the buffet. However, when we visited Weligama kitchen in between mealtimes to order some food for our baby, the staff seemed lethargic. We felt some were not provided with a sound training. Moreover, food quality at Weligama kitchen was not consistent. For instance, Croissant & Danish tasted stale & bacon was overcooked & tasteless on the first day but was good on the second day. Also, the fish & chips we ordered for the baby included fatty black parts & some pieces were not properly marinated. Some chips were over fried as well. Although a variety of cereal was provided at the breakfast buffet, the setup for it was not suitable so it was soggy. In addition, we felt that they should have offered homemade or quality jams & sauces instead of local cheap brands. It was good to see that they have taken measures to avoid contact due to Covid 19 and the food was served by the chefs. However, what did not make sense was that fruit, bakery items, sauces, dressings, salads, cheese & condiments were expected to be served by the customer.
Furthermore, the ornamental jars filled with pickles were not properly cleaned and there were many flies fallen dead on the area which the jars were kept which questions their standards of hygiene. It should be highlighted that Weligama Baking Company serves quality bakery items for reasonable prices but unfortunately for us, it was only opened on the day which we arrived.
Pool attendants were not to be seen most of the time & getting a pool towel was difficult. Since it was not monitored, some customers got into the pool without proper swimming attire and some toddlers got in without even dressing in swimming diapers which really questioned the hygiene of the pool as well. On our second day, when we arrived at the baby pool, it was smelly and the slide had bird droppings. Also, the main pools were not properly cleaned as well.

Marriott Weligama Resort & Spa is a Category 3 (Off-peak 15,000 Marriott rewards points/night) property located in south-western part of Sri Lanka in Weligama Bay. The property is located right on the beach known for surfing and other water activities.
Check-in was fairly quick and while I was being checked in, front desk manager Bhagyashree came by and introduced herself and notified me that although our room was not ready yet, if we were willing to wait for 30 minutes, she would have an amazing room for us at the top floor. While we waited, she took us to the hotel lounge and treated us with juice and tea. Must be one of the rare Marriott properties where even just a Gold Elite gets treated this well!!
Our room came with 2 double beds and a single bed. Each of us got our own bed, yaaay!!
We decided to have dinner at the Weligama Kitchen restaurant located in ground floor. The pricing was very reasonable especially considering the location and the property. We ordered some paneer masala for Mom while me and Dad tried some traditional Sri Lankan chicken Kottu Roti.
Since we had booked the room with points and being a mid tier Gold Elite there was no complimentary breakast. However, having checked the Weligama Kitchen the night before, we decided to have a la carte breakfast here. I ordered some toast and omelette with sausages and beans while parents went with some french toast.
Thumbs up:
Amazing location right on the beach
Excellent recognition of Marriott Gold Elite status (more than I have ever experienced in all my Marriott property stays before)
Great redemption option with Marriott points
Very reasonable pricing for dining in property
Thumbs down:
Nothing that I could think of

Thirteen of our family members made our reservation to stay on the 10th floor from January 12th to 15th. On arrival reception staff tried to say that our travel agent Garbo travels are at fault for not confirming and said the hotel has allocated us on the 8th floor. We got the agent on line and he produced the confirmation on the 10th floor for us in writing. Then the reservation manager intervened and stated that they had to give our rooms reserved since March 2019 to Indian wedding group as they have requested the 10th floor, in other words they bumped us off into a lower floor. To appease us the hotel offered us 25% off drinks and free lunch during our stay. We expect once a booking is made on a specific floor to be honoured, if any changes the hotel had ample time to inform our agent. Even the day before our arrival our rooms were confirmed by a staff named Imbrani to our agent and didn’t honour on the day. That’s what I call poor customer service and in fact deceiving the customer. Then the nightmare began with the Indian wedding party running riot, unbearable noise, guests exposing from their balconies to our grand children and showing no respect to the other guests in the hotel. The most disappointing aspect was that the Managers had no backbone to set limits or control the wedding party. We expect far better standards from Marriott. However the meals served in the Weligama kitchen was great and the staff at the restaurants did their best to make our stay bit bearable. Location and the amenities were of high standards. I note the review by Edi D states they were offered the rooms at a cheap rate because of the wedding but reservation staff didn’t have the decency to inform us about the wedding and charged us US$ 5574 for three nights ( 4 rooms for 3 nights). Hope the hotel has learned from this experience and wouldn’t subject any future guests to go through this nightmare. Thank you

We went there for a one night stay on our annual trip of my work place.
On our arrival, we were warmly welcomed I would say that they have taken all the precautions to avoid pandemic as per the guidelines given by the government at their level best and it should be appreciated.
They have arranged everything perfectly prior to our arrival. We were given with the room keys just within 15 minutes from our arrival and also the baggages were delivered to the rooms within 15-30 minutes.
They had two other group bookings but we were not felt that it was that much crowded mainly because of their management.
Rooms:
We would say that it is Super spacious, perfectly arranged, well equipped and rich with modern facilities & amenities.
Staff:
Very Kind, efficient and pleasant
Food / Restaurant:
All the meals during our stay were provided on a buffet and they have given us a time for the buffet since they had to handle two other groups. By the way, it is much appreciated even in this situation, they have managed to provide a buffet with many more varieties for all the meals. Food was delicious and mouth-watering.
Premises:
Well maintained, neat & tidy.
Recommended with five stars!!!

By far one of the best hotels I have been to so far. Staff service was excellent beginning from the bellboys, security, front office staff, restaurant staff and cleaning staff. Furthermore, their COVID-19 health guidelines are top notch. All guests are required to wear face masks in public places and the restaurant staff serve the food and hand over the plates, ensuring no contamination from guests. Their safety procedure was very impressive! Compared to other hotels that serve À la carte food with limited choices, Marriott serves buffets for all three meals and their food is delicious. The room we booked was a Superior room and the ocean view was fantastic and the room had a big bathroom with separate designated bathtub, shower, toilet and sink area. There is a big screen LED TV as well! One area they could improve is the fridge not being cool enough but that is a minor nuance. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there.

We stayed in this nice hotel few weeks ago.
We are statisfied with the service offered by the staff members. They were very helpful.
Since this period was in the middle of the Covid pandemic, we were bit worried about the safety protocoles in the hotel, however, we noticed that they often clean public areas and assisted guests to protect themselves with masks, and hand sanitizers.
Also in the areas we enjoyed within the hotel had good ventilation and seemed like properly maintained.
Although this hotel doesn't have a large beach area, the small beach area is well maintained and I noticed, that hotel employees were eagerly helping guests with kids to enjoy the beach / pool area.
One thing that guests should enjoy in this hotel is the rooftop. We went their in the night and the morning as well. It has a nice 360 view of the area and relaxes the mind.
This hotel is a good hotel, however, I noticed few areas that needs improvement. One thing I noticed is the insects in rooms (even in rooms in top floors). We noticed ants in the room and bathroom, which is not acceptable to a hotel of this caliber. I hope they can fix this issue. The quality of the food in the buffet can also be improved. There were many options in the buffets, but the taste was not as good as they looked.
I don't know whether this is practical to improve in this stage, but we noticed a lack of sound proofing in the rooms. We could hear everything happening outside the room.
Anyway, considering our experience in the hotel, I can recommend this hotel for a nice weekend getaway. You will be able to relax from your busy lives.
We are statisfied with the service offered by the staff members. They were very helpful.

A dream ocean view sun kissed beach property that's sheer luxury besides offering you a perfect destination to unwind.
A good 2.5 hours drive from Colombo airport, at the other end of Sri Lanka lies this delightful hotel smack next to the golden sands- a veritable pearl of the Indian ocean.
An amateur surfer's paradise due to its gentle lazy waves that offer the perfect location to learn the art of surfing without being intimidated by huge waves, yet big enough to allow you to learn to surf the waves.
Training sessions are reasonably priced starting at about SL rupees 4000.
The location offers a variety of accomodation in the vicinity and the entire drive alongside is an ocean side beach drive fir nearly an hour all the way to Galle, an ancient historically a Dutch influenced locality.
Great sea food for the connoisseur who would like to experiment with the fresh catch of the day.
Sri Lankan Tea is world famous for its variety of flavours with the Dilmah brand leading the race.
The country is also very well know for its Moon Stones and one shouldn't leave the country without adorning one.
The local population get by with decent English and are very polite and always eager to please.
The folks at the Marriott Welligama are equally receptive and go that extra Mile to please.
Traffic is very disciplined and roads are impeccably clean and very well maintained.
Climate is on the warmer side and light colored summer clothing with a Panama hat, sun glasses and sun tan lotion should be good to keep you cool.
US dollars are accepted at the duty free airport and some locations but you'd do well to exchange to Sri Lanka rupees at the airport on arrival for a good rate.

they have rooms with 2 twin beds. can be "cozy" for 2 adults.
otherwise, you can book 2 rooms with a connecting door, 1 with a double bed and 1 with twin beds.
You need to discuss this with the management of the hotel and they are very helpful and guest centric.
Currently in Sri Lanka the prices vary and the other facilities that are added might be separately charged. You need to discuss this with the helpful management and also negotiate a discount if possible.
Sorry I'm not sure!
We were able to accommodate my family of 4 (including 2 kids aged 5 & 7) in a Room on the 7th Floor. I can't really recall the type of the room category. Sorry about that.
