We stayed at the Old Yellowstone Inn for 1 night of our 5 day 6 night YNP trip July 11-16th, 2019. We stayed on the second floor and had direct views of the Old Faithful geyser (I believe there are only a few rooms with this view and I can’t remember room numbers). The rooms are very basic with little amenities, but you’re paying for location.. lodging here isn’t a must for exploring the geyser basins, but it does help being so close. It’s nice to have early and late access to the basins when the boardwalks are less populated without having to wake up hours before daylight or drive extended periods in the dark following sunset.
The main lobby of the inn is amazing! The rest of the building isn’t very impressive. There are cheaper lodging options available in this area, but they are hard to come by.
While staying here, we had dinner reservations at the Obsidian Dining Room. I don’t remember being overly impressed by the food. That being said, I don’t think I was impressed with any of the food we had in the park throughout our entire trip.
I probably wouldn’t book lodging at the Old Faithful Inn again simply due to pricing. The neatest feature of the Inn (the lobby) can be accessed without booking here.

We spent one night in the East Wing during a family trip to Yellowstone. I will echo previous reviews that you are paying for location only at this time. I would try to stay in the Snow Lodge or Old Faithful Lodge at this current COVID time as you will have to travel to either of those locations for anything including check-in.
Our room was fine and you literally walk out the door to Old Faithful, which was great! However, there are not even coffee makers in the room and a cup of coffee will require traveling to another lodge. I understood that the main lobby was closed but I assumed there was an on-site market or even a simple coffee station. As we happened to be here during a snowstorm, it was not enjoyable to have to bring our food back to the room to eat through the storm. That said, I’m sure it is a much different experience when the lobby is open.
Overall, for the price (no discount), there are currently much better options nearby.

I understand the frustration seen in other covid time reviews. People should have been warned better. All Yellowstone lodgings are usually rather bare bones and lacking certain amenities most expect. But with the lobby of the Inn being closed, it was more pronounced how stark the 2021 experience was. I had a more positive experience tempered only by surprise at checkout that the covid discount I was offered wasn’t on record and it took 25 minutes to sort out. This is the only reason for a reduction of one rating in this review. Yes, there was an offering due to the circumstances! But it was only to those who’d reserved old house or west wing rooms the year before which rooms never opened this year. I booked an old house room without bath for closing week 2020 back in May 2019. March 2020 we learned the Inn would not open. During the summer they changed their mind and offered a premium east wing room for my old house rate. It is true that food services were minimal, inconvenient, expensive for what you got and disappointing. However, we were there and made the most of it. It could have been worse. Because of the government shutdown in 2013 we had to miss our yearly holiday that year altogether. It is a special thing to lodge adjacent to Old Faithful. Lower prices are for those who reserve early, especially for cabins which go fast.

We stayed in the “newer” section in order to have a private bath. The hallway was reminiscent of “The Shining”. That aside, it was dated, dirty and very small. My son’s bedsheets had stains on them. During 48 hrs there, I never saw one vacuum being used in any of the rooms that were being cleaned. Our family of 4 was not comfortable due to the lack of cleanliness.
Another huge problem was the shortage of food on premises. Not only were there insufficient dining options since most of the table service restaurants were closed, those that were open were constantly running out of the basics. One evening, I spoke to a lady whose family gave up on the cafeteria after they ran out of everything. They tried for ice cream for dinner only to have the ice cream machine break while they were on line. These are major issues when you are spending a lot of money on a vacation and want to enjoy yourselves. Lots of hot, hungry, grumpy families.

While we understood there would be headaches due to reopening from COVID, the property management company did an overall terrible job. They’ve had a year to plan the reopening and the entire process seemed to be run by amateurs right out of school.
From the very beginning: the website is a joke and was regularly not functional leading up to our visit; since they cancelled the summer of 2020, we rebooked for 2021, they cancelled again in May 2021 only to reverse course again 2 weeks later and we had to rebook on a first come first serve basis — so we we’re fully expecting something to go wrong. We show up with hard copies of our reservation and guess what, nothing in the system. The only explanation we got was a blank stare and blaming it on their DOS operating system.
Asked the front desk person where the elevator is located, he had no clue. Told us to ask someone else. Was a sign of the next 3 days to come.
Finally got in. No room service, but no worries they give you $5 off your $355 nightly rate. Thanks.
Restaurants are take out only, which we knew. What we didn’t know or understand is how there were no tables set up for paying guests. No guidance on where tables are. Nothing. Total free for all to figure it out.
Lack of consistency on COVID protocol is another frustration. They have no issue with hundreds standing in line, shoulder to shoulder, with no masks, indoors and outdoors to get ice cream, into the gift shop, take photos inside the lobby, waiting to get foot, etc. but they cannot fathom allowing paying guests to sit down inside at the empty dining halls to eat. Instead you’re going to eat that $38 steak in your lab with plastic forks. I understand if there is a staffing shortage for servers, etc. but why not allow paying guests to bring their food indoors and sit and eat.
Basically if you don’t have the resources to care for your paying customers at $350-$400 per night, you probably shouldn’t be open to accommodate the general public.
Lastly, this is an Old Faithful Inn problem. We stayed at Canyon Lodge two nights before and had a totally different experience. They were late cleaning our rooms for check in so they gave our entire party free dinner vouchers. The food options were well run and really what we expected given COVID protocols and staffing shortages. Was it perfect, no, but it was sufficient and well run given the circumstances. Old Faithful needs a management overhaul though.

Definite pass. Took over an hour to check in and we were told, ‘Oh, this isn’t bad’ by the person that checked us in. They don’t care. You are over (way over) paying for the location. No WiFi. You could hear the water turn on/off in the room above us. Pillows (2 small one) were terrible. Overall an expensive disappointment. (NOTE: seeing Old Faithful was great, yet it goes off every 90 mins so no need to stay there).

First, the good. The location can't be beat. Staying here allows you to avoid driving back and forth from West Yellowstone, and the easy access to Old Faithful and the Beehive Geyser is great. The building itself is very cool and historic, and sitting in the lobby and enjoying a cocktail was very nice. The beds in the West Wing are very comfortable with a good selection of pillows, and they provided an oscillating fan and coffee maker in the room. Finally, the staff is competent (if not particularly friendly). Now, the bad. I paid more than $500 per night, which is fine, but for that price, I expect some amenities. There were absolutely none. With the exception of the beds, it was more like a roadside motel in the 1970s. Our room in the West Wing (the newest part of the hotel, built in the 1920s), smelled old and musty. It had dim, outdated lighting and at 5'9", I had to do a backbend to get my head under the very short, cheap shower head. We had no Kleenex and one roll of toilet paper, and when we asked for a second roll as the first was running out, we were reluctantly given it, being told that they were running short. The conditioner provided in the shower has beed watered down and can't even be called conditioner. There is no cell service or WiFi (they state that this is a government thing), so you are COMPLETELY disconnected. I had to use the room phone to place a long distance call like it was 1992, and my short call cost me $13. There are no refrigerators or microwaves available for in-room use, but you can use the microwave in the deli when it's open. The food options at the hotel are very limited. The Dining Room offers only a $40 dinner buffet (no a la carte options -- maybe a Covid or staffing thing) that serves extremely average food. Our waiter was fantastic though. There's a deli/cafe that's open for breakfast and lunch, and it's very packed, probably because the Dining Room only offers yet another expensive breakfast buffet. The bar is fine. The drinks were OK and were priced as expected. So, despite the great location, I would not stay here again. I'd rather stay somewhere in West Yellowstone that gives you better value for your money and do the drive every day.

We booked a month in advance and could not cancel the room had a very old fashioned heating system. No internet small bed and 3/4 bath. The staff at check in were very nice and helpful but the door person knew almost nothing and gave wrong info ( time next door shop was closed. Place fir ice cream etc. Masks requirements were in place by Biden Even though there is no evidence it stopped anything This place is very historic and unique and they can charge >$600 a night because they can. Worst value room I have ever had. Needed an extra blanket as outside temp was 35 and heat on full would not bring it up. They had supplied a very thin cheap blanket Itemized room charges Room$50. (Fair) Taxes and fees $100 rip off for bad room facilities Hotel design history architecture $100 fair price but you can get it fir free just walk in View ok ok’d faithful geyser from room $300. But you can get it fir free Food not included Recreational facilities ( pool, exercise room spa, none but a walk by the geysers is better anyway Snow lodge

First I’ll say the lodge itself is a must visit when traveling to the Old Faithful area. It’s such a unique and fascinating structure set in an amazing location adjacent to the geyser.
As for staying here we would not do it again. Like so many places these days the hotel is apparently struggling with staffing and supplies needed to provide quality service.
Our west wing queen room was really dated and in need of updates and maintenance. The room was tiny. There’s a well worn sink in the room with the bed. The single bathroom light switch was on out the outside of the bathroom and controlled both the bathroom light and exhaust fan which almost sounded like a chainsaw when turned on. Plus there is no nightlight to find and use the sink locate at the foot of the bed afterward. This meant when anyone went to the bathroom during the night everyone else in the room is certainly awaken each time.
Anyone walking in the hall and talking at normal conversation levels almost sounded as though they were in your room.
The only breakfast option at the Inn was just pitiful really given the rate charged to stay here. A small cafe off the lobby offered a cooler with cold bagel breakfast sandwiches, regular sandwiches and juice, while coffee was also available. Items here were very much overpriced. Social distancing in the little cafe was not possible as you wait in line to pick your food from a cooler, wait to pay, wait to pour your own coffee and then wait to use the microwave to heat your yummy bagel sandwich. All these lines are in the same tiny space.
For dinner there was only one option in the hotel and it was a self serve buffet that had the same items each night. Food there wasn’t bad but choices were limited. When the buffet opens the line to get seated was around 40-50 people and filled the limited seating area. Everyone coming later is given a pager. Our wait was around 1 hour 15 minutes when we came in an hour after opening time.
As I’ve already said it’s difficult to rate this stay. The rate of $500+ with tax per night is simply way too pricey for the quality of the amenities and room we were given. Would definitely stay elsewhere if we return to the area. That said the lodge itself is certainly worth a visit to see and perhaps when times return to some sort of normal again it would have far better services.

Having planned this trip a year ago, we were looking forward to staying in the OFI. We stayed there the first week it opened. When we checked in, the front desk person shared that we were to lower our expectations for service and the restaurant. We would not get housekeeping services for our 4 nights though we could get clean linens from the front desk. The restaurant only had 4 cooks and were short on wait staff. As a result, they offered buffet only for breakfast and dinner. Dinner buffet was the same every night. The wait staff were very friendly and well trained.
Our room overlooked the Old Faithful Geyser and it was amazing to see it go off from our room. On Monday night, the heat in the 'old house/original part of the inn' went out for 24 hours. The temperatures were in the 20s in those rooms. The managers told the people who stayed in those rooms that there was not anything they could do about it and offered them blankets.
We own a service business and can appreciate being short staffed. Sadly, the management at OFI did not make accommodations and utilize resources effectively. Although the inn has an excellent location and stunning setting, when one is paying $500-700 a night, the expectation is for a level of service consistent with cost.

First, Our days we spent overnight at Old Faithfull Inn was AWFUL! The "Show Stopper" is, if you want to SLEEP at night you defiantly will not (unless you have heavy duty narcotics to stay asleep) Old Faithfull is an Extremely OLD hotel. Doors slam closed up and down the hall constantly at night, you hear conversations in rooms next to you, creaking footsteps talking in hallway ALL hours of Night! While Beautiful Lobby to visit My Advice: Do not stay there! Remember this warning to you at 2AM 3AM 4AM and 5AM if you decide to stay there.
SHARED BATHROOM- We took a guided tour by hotel staff (3 times a day) of original part of Hotel (not Annexed buildings where tour bus guest stay) . These rooms you are referring to have a "shared hall bathroom" The rooms are on 2 floors overlooking Lobby that are supposedly for "hotel guests". There are not many of these rooms so you will NOT have tourist bus people in these rooms directly next to you. This does not mean bus people will not be passing buy your room and your “Shared bathroom" in their comings and goings all day and night from their room to lobby. The bathrooms are separate Male and Female of course, but since they are shared there is no way to lock them ( think of a public restroom in any other hotel with couple very old (I think 2) shower stalls that have twist locks . So, anyone passing in the hall can use those restrooms while walking by. NO HOTEL STAFF monitors these " Private Shared" bathrooms they are in pass thru hallway with guest and tourist passing constantly either to get better view of lobby or going to their room else ware in the hotel.
If you complain the managers are EXTREEMELY RUDE. They will tell you it is an OLD HOTEL and Being Preserved in the manner of which it was built. Manger told me there is NOTHING THEY CAN DO! All staff are seasonal workers this place is only open for only 8 months out of year so there is huge tourist demand to stay there. Managers are uncaring and cannot fix common problems because "Historic nature of property. Think of your stay as CAMPING experience but under a roof.
AGAIN, do not stay there is want to sleep or want privacy

No wifi and my T-Mobile data plan didn’t work either. It was specifically annoying when we wanted to look up the weather for the day and set up Waze to go somewhere in or out of the park.
In Yellowstone the smoke was not bad at all, a little haze but again not very bad. Tetons was really bad, at times all you could see was a shadow of them through all the haze. Lucky for us it rained the one day for about an hour and it was nice and clear for the rest of the day and we got some nice pictures of the Tetons.
There are more places to choose from in the Yellowstone National Park area.
