The Plumeria Hostel Alternative provides private, lockable bedrooms (NO bunk beds) for singles or couples in small, shared apartments. We are clean, safe, and affordable, and are located outside (but near) the hectic Waikiki tourist zone. You'll have housemates sharing kitchen and bathroom, so consideration is required and sociability is a plus; and indoor smoking is not allowed. We provide free wi-fi, a coin-op laundry, BBQ area, and pleasant, tree-shaded yard areas. You’ll be issued keys and security gate codes, so you can come and go any time; but quiet hours start at 10PM and visiting ends at 11 PM. Visit us for a relaxed Hawaii vacation…or we provide an excellent place to stay when moving to Oahu.
I spent a long time researching where to stay. This was the cheapest I found but what was the catch? I had several conversations before and during my stay with the employees of this place. They are absolutely the most honest people I have ever come across that are running a business. If there's anything even slightly off kilter with anything they will admit to it front and center before you even notice. If there's anything about the experience you will have before you get there, they will tell you up front exactly what to expect. There were absolutely no surprises nor any doublespeak about what we got. This is a hybrid building, people live here permanently. There are also people who are long term residents who are on the way in or out of Hawaii or temporary workers or what have you. There are also people like you, tourists who rent rooms by the day. If you rent via airbnb here, this is literally one of the very few *legal* airbnbs operating in Hawaii. Your dollars go towards keeping this place open for the people who live here, who by and large are struggling to afford the high rent in Hawaii. These people are literally trying to keep those less fortunate with money alive and with homes. This place was "quiet", and by that I mean the residents kept to themselves, bothered nobody, and followed the rules in which you have to be quiet after 10pm. You will have no problems whatsoever with the residents. If I did come in contact with anyone they were very nice and friendly. As for actual "literal" quiet, no. There is road noise and the walls were paper thin. You could hear people coughing in the neighboring rooms, for example. The room was very clean. It was obviously very, very old but the employees here clearly are trying their best to keep the place as orderly and clean as they can considering the age of the building. So yes, the bathroom tiles were old and cracking and discolored a bit, and bits and pieces here and there in the room were obviously aged and not in the best shape. However, it is clearly cared for. It is not dilapidated or ruined, they are keeping it up and doing well. As for convenience, they are located one block away from several bus stops. There are tons of places to eat nearby that are cheap and not overpriced tourist stops. You can walk 10-15 minutes to a Walmart. It is right across the street from a Zippy's, the local diner chain where you can get real local Hawaiian food and not tourist food. If you want the whole nine yards like a hotel room, a personal bathroom and air conditioning and everything, book the studio rooms. Call before you book to make sure you get the best. If you are a budget, couples or solo traveler I'd highly recommend this place. I would almost say if you have kids then don't do it because, in a twist, if your kids were rowdy at all their noise would be the ones bothering the residents and not the other way around. If you are not interested in the beach or the crowds, this is the place for you. If you feel like you want to do good for the people of Hawaii while you visit, this is the place for you.…

Unbelievably clean and secure. Richard and his staff remarkably warm and caring. 10 minutes bus ride to Waikiki or a 3 minute walk in the opposite direction to a bus to downtown Honolulu and North Oahu and the 25 ft surfs and beach.😎🇺🇸🌈 Can’t beat the price.

The Apartment is very close to the public beach, about 15min walking. In the night, it can get very noisy based on where your room window is located. All in all - the room is clean, bathroom is also solid. If you are traveling on a budget, its an option. My bad experience was that I had sharing the apartment with wrong people who would be on the toilet for about 45-60min, but it can happen.

My husband had a last minute trip and the the plumeria was just the right fit. Very convenient location and has all the basics you need. Safeway and starbucks right around the corner with lots of restaurants and shopping nearby too. Staff was very helpful and understanding.

The staff and tenants are friendly. For the price of the accommodation, you are getting what you pay for. It is basic and clean. The staff will try to place you with other people around your same age and maybe same interest. There are some units that appear to have some retired tenants, who are also friendly. That shouldn't deter you from staying here. It's about a 10-15 min walk to Ala Moana mall and a little further is the beach. There is a Safeway one block away.

I've just relocated to Honolulu, and stayed at the Plumeria for 4 weeks, while looking for an apartment. The medium sized room which I was in was rather spacious and well kept, though its furnishings were simple. My room was in a 4 bedroom apartment, shared by several young people and couples throughout my stay. Everything in the apartment was well kept and in working condition, just that the sink in the bathroom was a little old. My stay here was enjoyable, primarily because my flatmates happened to be great people who used everything, especially the bathroom judiciously. This is always the case in every shared housing situation. It was also interesting to notice that different flatmates had quite different living habits. Since most of the rooms in the apartment are single and not shared rooms, it didn't feel too crowded at any point in time. The Plumeria has a centralized location in a relatively clean and safe neighbourhood, well served by routes 1 and 2. The main gates and doors are locked at night for maximum security. It also has a well maintained laundry area. The office staff are wonderful! They really go the extra mile to ensure that their short term visitors do not miss their calls, and also ensure that everyone, including their short term visitors, receives their mail. The front desk staff are really friendly and knowledgeable, and are able to handle last minute changes and requests promptly without any difficulty. Last of all, I got to stay at the Plumeria, as it was too late to find an extended stay hotel for a month. Overall, it was a great experience. The good thing is that it is a cheaper option, and glad to have the chance to be at the Plumeria.…

Not very safe for women too. The pictures make the place look old and tired and need repairs but it actually looks even worse than the photos. The staff are rude and only work for a few hours a day so if you check in at night or any time that is not between 10 am and noon then it is really hard to find anyone to give you a room. This place is really expensive for a hostel. Very crowded. I wanted a room in a all Women Dorm but they were booked out. If you don't believe that the area is unsafe type in the address in homefacts.com and you will get a better idea of the area. The hostel is half dorms for people staying there and half apartments where people actually live and there are some very unsafe people there. Please don't stay here if you have children. I saw lots of families staying there and just for a little more money you can have your own apartment suite in a hotel with a bathroom you don't have to share with strangers. If you prefer cheap hostels like me there are better places for the same price and some that are cheaper and in safer areas. Some people stay here think they will get a dorm to themselves but this is very, very rare. It's crowded so you will always be sharing a kitchen and bathroom with 4-6 other people. No security so don't stay here if you are renting a bike or leave bags or backpacks outside. No real gates so homeless people wander in day and night. The location isn't that great, at least for the kind of stuff I wanted to do in Hawaii. It's basically like downtown L.A. Pollution, noise, fights, thin walls, drugs, prostitution, homeless people.…

This place is an excellent, very basic hostel. They try and keep it clean, and It feels very safe and secure here. It was a much needed and refreshing find, after a horrible hostel experience in Waikiki. The location is actually really good, if you want to check out Honolulu, and your about 10 minutes from Waikiki. I've been very happy with my stay, and I would highly recommend it to travelers who are used to basic, accommodations. The staff was super friendly and helpful as well. Albeit, this is not a party hostel. If your into parties, you probably want to be down in Waikiki.

As a hostel, The Plumeria is pretty much on par with what I expected. My friends and I had a suite to ourselves, so we didn't really have to negotiate bathroom or space with strangers. We did, however, have to deal with very low hot water pressure and lots of small bugs that looked like flightless gnats. I'd say that The Plumeria could also benefit from having more readily available staff. When we arrived, in spite of me calling three times to tell them when we would be getting there, we still had to wait about fifteen minutes before someone came to help us. I'd also say that the Plumeria could benefit from being more technologically advanced (e.g. letting us pay in a way other than cash).

I stayed here for a week in September 2013. It is adequate and you can't beat the price or location. The staff is super fantastic and guests are really cool, great Saturday BBQ with fun people from all over the world. I paid for the cheapest room and got what I paid for but that's not a complaint, if you spend a little more you will get lots more. Roommate was good, hardly ever saw him and he was really helpful when I did. I will probably stay here again when I transition from the house I am at to a condo or apartment. Fills up fast starting in January so book ahead.
