The Hilton Vacation Club The Modern Honolulu has received mixed reviews; while the staff is often commended for their friendliness and the hotel's location is appreciated for its proximity to downtown, many travelers feel that the value for money falls short. Issues with overpriced fees and outdated amenities have been noted, and despite the satisfactory range of amenities, guests have experienced noise disturbances and have called for updates to the property. Room cleanliness receives praise, but the infrequency of housekeeping services and maintenance concerns are drawbacks for some visitors.

We spent a full week at the Modern for our honeymoon, and we were very happy with our stay. We walked in to our room with a nice towel/flower arrangement on our bed to welcome us. We received no other special treatment being on our honeymoon. The room was clean, and the hotel is in a great location. Some of the furniture is outdate and worn, but that didn't effect our stay. We have all the necessary working amenities needed. There is no daily maid, but let's be honest, who cleans their house every day anyways? The staff and pool areas are very nice as well, and the boardwalk was perfect for traveling to the beach and other hotels. We would definitely stay here again!

The Modern is in a great Waikiki location. Not right in the middle of all the bustle and noise but close enough that one can easily access stores and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and light with platform beds. The wifi is quite strong. There are two pools (although one was closed during my visit). The sunrise pool is lovely, especially during the late afternoon and early evening. There are a few things that if modified would improve the 'visit experience'. First check in is painfully slow. Most rental car agreements do not require as many signatures and legalese as The Modern's check in procedure. Secondly, the hotel should standardize its 'happy hour' times. The different happy hours at different hotel bars is confusing and can result in bills at non-happy hour rates that are very high. Lastly, the hotel provides two 500 ml bottles of water in each room upon check in. It does not matter whether one is staying 1 night or 1 week - 2 bottles. This is a ridiculous policy and the staff acknowledges that it makes no sense. Housekeeping should replenish the water as the bottles are used up. Food in the restaurants tends to be a bit pricey (it is a hotel after all), but there is a great pub across the street (Harbor Pub and Pizza) which serves a decent breakfast, makes terrific pizzas, salads and sandwiches and is moderately priced.

The hotel is in the middle of a conversion into a timeshare. The hotel room had pluses and minuses. The bathroom was strange in that there is a sliding door with no locks, no windows and no vent except for wooden slates that open into the bedroom. The shower has no hand held but has very good water pressure and rain shower and the shower is large and the floor is great in that it doesn't get slippery like a lot of new hotel showers do. There is a small refrigerator, but no freezer and no microwave. Room was a decent size but no balcony and a nice side view to the marina. There are rooms that you can see Hilton Hawaiian Village's Friday night fireworks and they offer a Friday night dinner where you can see the fireworks from the terrace. I think the best feature of the hotel is the staff, they are very friendly and very attentive. I had rented a mobility scooter and they do not have a ramp, but they do have a lift and their door/bell staff were very attentive and always there to help operate the lift to let me enter and exit the hotel. I also liked their policy of cleaning the room every 4th day since I don't like being bothered every day on vacation so they can come into the room especially since they ask that we don't change the towels every day.

This was the worst hotel stay ever experienced in Waikiki, and I am a frequent Honolulu visitor having stayed at majority of the major hotels in the strip. First off, front desk agent had issues using the computer system checking me in and my check in took over 30 minutes!! She inputted the wrong card on file and I got double charged all my resort fees for the stay. The first day our room keys got deactivated without notice. The second day the second round of room keys got deactivated again. The same thing happened the third day in a row, it was a nightmare getting locked out of the room constantly and having to go downstairs to get new keys. Then the elevators had issues and waiting for the elevators took over 10-15 minutes at times. The wifi and internet connection was not strong and kept disconnecting as well. The only decent thing was the housekeeping but they ended up throwing out my portable utensils kit which I left on the table. Overall terrible experience and stay, the experience at the Modern was frustrating and ruined what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation.

Do not recommend this hotel!! Stay at the Sheraton or any of the main hotels along the beach and spend the little extra it is much more worth it.

So after reading all of the reviews about protests and noise from the night club I was pretty worried that we wouldn't have a great stay here. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised that we had a very good experience. I must note that we stayed on the 15th floor so I'm guessing noise from the nightclub couldn't reach us. We did not see any protests while we were there, 5 nights.

The hotel definitely needs a refresh which they are in the process of doing. The rug is stained, the hallways are very dim as others have noted. For the most part though the rooms are fine and clean. The water pressure in the bathroom is very good we had a nice view of the harbor. The pool area/bar restaurant is really lovely, We spent lots of time at the pool and the food/drinks were terrific. The bar staff was so friendly and accommodating. The food was really delicious. We had mainly lunch and snacks, but everything we had was very fresh and delicious. My daughters are vegetarians and there were some good options for them.

The timeshare part is annoying but we are timeshare owners so we are used to dealing with this aspect of staying at a timeshare resort. We were left alone other than our first day when we checked in and we had one scheduled meeting while we were there.

The Ala Moana Center is walking distance (3 blocks west) from this hotel. The main restaurants and shops near Waikiki are located about 20 minutes walk east (parking is hard to find in Waikiki and expensive). My only complaints are that the refrigerator is very small (18"x18"), and there is no hot tub on the premises. The pool was cooler than what I like and you can't get a towel past 7PM, even though it is open until 9PM. The food was very good at the Beach Café on the premises, and the bartenders and servers were very friendly and efficient. Our room was ready about 2 hours before official check-in time. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was a good size with lots of storage, and the shower had great water pressure. The shower needed a little more cleaning (a little bit of dark spots on the tiles). The closet was big enough for all our clothes and to store our 2 large pullman suitcases and 2 carry-ons. The closet had a safe as well. I would definitely stay here again. We were there for a week, and even though we did not request any housekeeping, we received what we needed a few minutes after we requested it (towels, toilet paper, and tissues).

Was concerned after reading so many bad reviews about this hotel and time-share issues. We stayed for fifteen nights on the fifteenth floor and was very happy with standard of room with great views of Waikiki and the ocean. Not once did anyone approach us about time share or experience and protests from ex employees which lots of other reviewers have mentioned.

The hotel is a situationed about fifteen minutes from Waikiki Beach using the pink line bus which stops at the next hotel. $2 per ride. Great service but service stops pretty earlier but Uber available if required.

Budget car rental is opposite the hotel, book online not at counter as you will pay double. Their car park is only $15 per night, the hotels charges €35 per night.

Hotel is being converted over to time share apartments which will take years to complete.

You have easy access to the nearby beach, 10 minute walk. Nice lagoon in front Hilton which have a great firework display every Friday at 07:45 worth seeing and a great food truck on the car Park serving great garlic/coconut prawns.

We would recommend this hotel and hope to return again soon

Really should not be considered an exceptional or "boutique" hotel. It is average at best. Having spent 5 days recently I found the room noisy, appointments dated, and service poor. Perhaps COVID has made it more difficult. However the room was never serviced even when asked, and small things like requests for clean towels or replacement of in room coffee were either refused or simply just not done. Most annoying was a "Resort fee" that was charged at check in that was not shown in any prior information so in effect was a hidden added daily cost.

Let’s start with the positives: sitting by the pool was nice and relaxing. The view of the ocean from our room was beautiful. The bathrooms by the pool and lobby were great, spacious, and clean. The staff were friendly and it was a quick and easy check in/out. Nice location for walking around to beach, marina, shops, and restaurants.
Now on to the the issues that need improvement: cleanliness is a big factor for me and our room did not come close to feeling clean. It really was unfortunate as I had high expectations for this hotel as it came highly recommended and for the price I was expecting a nice clean room. The carpet was filthy, had many stains, and I stepped in something very sticky. The pull out bed was full of crumbs and did not have fresh clean linens/sheets. I had to request clean bedding and it took about an hour for the clean sheets and bedding to be delivered. The air conditioner smelled of mold/mildew and the bathroom had a sewage smell to it. I hoped the room would be larger as I booked a jr. suite but it felt like a standard size room and it was right next to the loud elevator that I heard all night. The room needs many more hooks and towel or drying racks. The drying line in the shower was full of mold so I didn’t want to use that. One morning there was no one at the towel station so many guests had to wait more than 20min to get a pool towel. The pool was also very cold (wish it was heated) and one day the outdoor showers were broken. There is not much for families with younger children. I also spent over 4hrs by the pool and not a single staffer from the bar/restaurant asked me if I wanted to order any food or drinks. I had to go up to the bar to order our items which I don’t mind at all if that’s how it’s done but the staff did go up to many other guests to get their food/drink order so that was a bit odd to me that I was never asked nor approached.
I cannot recommend this hotel for these reasons and unfortunately will not be returning.

So after reading all of the reviews about protests and noise from the night club, I went to the hotel ahead of my booking (we were in the area, staying at another hotel) and requested to be in a room away from the nightclub. I had no problem with the request and overall the customer service was great (thanks Victor!)

The hotel definitely needs a refresh which they are in the process of doing. The hallways are very dim and the beds are very low. You can hear everything being spoken about in the hallway and when people enter and exit rooms because the doors are quite noisy. For the most part though the rooms are fine and clean. The water pressure in the bathroom is very good. We had housekeeping every day and they refilled the coffee pods and extras.

We were invited down for a “welcome gift” which we declined as we knew it was the timeshare stuff.
The hotel was nice and the customer service was great BUT the resort fees are way too high for what you get. There are other hotels in the area with more amenities, lower fees and lower rooms costs.

I stayed at Modern in March and the rate is $35/day. I would suggest parking across the street at ilikia Marina condo. I parked there for 10 days @ $28/ day. You can purchase the ticket via the machine at the parking lot. It offered in/out privileges.
