The Royal Hawaiian captivates with its charming, historic atmosphere and splendid beachfront location that guests frequently applaud for its convenience to local attractions. While the immaculate cleanliness of the resort earns consistent praise, opinions on value and service are mixed; some travelers find it overpriced and encounter inconsistent service quality. The rooms boast historic elegance and spaciousness, yet there are mentions of them being somewhat dated. Praise for the picturesque gardens is common, though the additional fees for amenities and the modestly-sized pool have not gone unnoticed.

We stayed for 3 nights in a suite in the historical wing of this classic hotel. As you would expect from the 'historical moniker', the room was old, but very spacious and with a lot of character. The bathroom was small, but functional. The living room had a musty smell to it, and no 'garden view' from our window on the second floor (no balcony either).

The location is excellent, right in the middle of shops and restaurants in Waikiki, all within an easy walking distance. The beach is front of the hotel is busy and the only way to get a chair was to reserve it in advance. For the holiday season, you'll have to reserve months in advance. The pool at the Royal Hawaiian is very, very small, and the hot tub was full of little unaccompanied kids at all times. But the hotel allows you to use the much larger pool at the Sheraton next door (3 min walk on the beach) if you want more space.

Room service was spotty, with turn down on some nights but not on others. Requests for an extra bottle of shampoo on the last night went unanswered after two calls. Lines for breakfast at the restaurant were 20-45min long, although they warned us about it. We had asked for an early check in, which they were able to accommodate. There are a few resort activities and a nice bar onsite.

I am sure this will be a nicer experience outside of the peak season of the holidays. But if they price it at peak in Dec, they should also staff and serve at peak at that time. But good, fun beach times nonetheless.

My wife and I spent four nights at the Royal Hawaiian in late January 2020. It was a good stay.

The hotel has a very nice location on Waikiki beach and very nice grounds. It’s in the heart of Waikiki with easy access to shopping and restaurants.

We were in the tower next to the old hotel – the tower was built in 1969 and has not had a major renovation since. And that’s the major limitation of the hotel.

Our room faced the beach and had a wonderful view. They provide complementary appetizers and drinks on the first floor of the tower. It was a nice place to meet and hang out with friends.

The room was a bit small, and the bath was especially small. It only has a single sink which causes some scheduling problems in the morning. The thing I dislike the most about the bath is that it only has a tub, with a tub shower. I really dislike a tub shower. It’s hard to get into and out of, and it’s slippery when you’re in it. Additionally, water usually leaks past the shower curtain and gets the floor wet. The best thing the Royal Hawaiian could do would be to renovate the rooms to make the bath larger, to have two sinks and to have a real shower.

While this is not a critique of the room, they gave us a room with two double beds instead of a queen or king, as we requested.

The room had the usual amenities, including a refrigerator and a coffee maker. Both of which were appreciated.

The Internet access was fast and easy to connect to. Thank you.

The restaurants were very good. The staff was universally excellent.

I did not have an opportunity to see any of the rooms in the old section of the hotel. I was told that they are smaller than the rooms in the tower. Additionally, the way the hotel is situated not many of the rooms face the beach.

One side note, we did the outrigger canoe ride and it was really nice – quite exciting.

When we come back to O’ahu, it’s likely we’ll stay at the Royal Hawaiian again.

This is actually an amendment to my original review of the Royal Hawaiian Resort In Waikiki, Hawaii. Making annual treks to Waikiki, we’ve stayed in several top rated places (4 start and above) along the beach. Last September was our first splurge to go “Royal”. We’ve stayed on either side of the Royal but last year, caved to temptation.
How can you not be tempted to try the Royal Hawaiian? Take a walk thru and check out it’s legendary history and pink stucco exterior, tile floors, lush tropical grounds, well appointed interior decor, eclectic boutiques and prime location on Waikiki beach. They offer historical and modern accommodations and our favorite are the modern Mailani tower rooms overlooking the adult pool and jacuzzi. If that’s not enough, try the best beach bar in Waikiki - their famous Mai Tai Bar and Grill or a foodies delight - Azure Restaurant.
Enough right? Not quite! LOL
Trying to make our trip plans to return there again during these trying times of travel restrictions and fears of Covid 19 has not been easy. However, one employee in particular has been our savior this year and deserves recognition as to one of the many reasons the Royal is worth every penny. I’m speaking of Rachel Lindsay, Director of rooms at the Royal Hawaiian.
Rachel notified us of the closures back in March, when our reservations had to be canceled due to the pandemic. She offered any help she could provide.
Boy did she help, through great communication. Over 15 emails later, 3 changes she made to our dates and a dozen or more questions she answered - all whilst the resort is officially closed, she helped us get our favorite resort lined up for our visit when they reopen.
We’re thrilled that the Royal has employees like Rachel which makes us feel the world revolves around our happiness. A trip to the Royal is truly a guilty pleasure, one that’s not easily afforded, but I’m here to tell you it is worth it. The daily resort fee covers many perks, the grounds and furnishings are historical, sophisticated and give you that true Island relaxed vibe. The food and drinks are top quality and a lot made from fresh local ingredients. My observation is the guests seem well behaved and are mostly adult, and those few with kids in tow have them under control. The staff are super friendly, personable, caring and best of all, Rachel works there!

The front desk lady who check us in was very nice and welcoming.
Some staff members have attitudes especially in the concierge department
Housekeeping is not consistent and the room is not cleaned properly on a daily base . One day a tissue was left on the floor at the bottom of the bed . Most of the time housekeeping did not replenish the bathroom toiletries , coffee and tea amenities.
No real China cups for your coffee or tea in your bedroom ! Instead generic poor quality paper cups with lids that do not fit properly ! You would expect a China coffee cup for the price you pay to stay in a 5 stars luxury collection hotel . The answer is No !
The bathroom mirror and the washbasin was not clean properly. The bathroom is very very small. The room is very dark and the old heavy curtains have notable stains .
The lighting in the room is very poor and poor voltage.
There is not enough plugs in the room and if you want to make coffee you need to make your coffee in the bathroom ( how unhygienic and inconvenient) because not enough plugs in the room and the coffee maker electrical cord is too short unless you want to get on your knees and use the plugs located by the bedroom wall baseboards !
Because of the lack of outlets in the bedroom they have attached a generic outlet strip on the bottom of one of the old desk with a couple of plastic zip ties ? How tacky and how inconvenient for an 70 years old lady guest to have to bend over to rich the outlet to be able to plug in the iron ! For a five star hotel it is unacceptable.
When we visited and stayed before in the hotel they always welcomed us with a beautiful and delicious loaf of banana bread delivered to our room. Now they give you a coupon at check in to redeem at the small bakery counter by the lobby and in exchange you receive 3 différents flavors dried and minuscules muffins in a brown bag !
The pool is very small and the inside tiles are very dirty and have not been brushed for a long period of time . Needs some attention.
The hot tub also needs the tiles to be clean and one of the stair corner is chipped and you could injure your foot.
During our entire stay there was a dirty bath towel and some trash in the bushes and trees by the hot tub. The trash can was also overflowing one day. We never saw a pool attendant walking around during our entire stay to keep the place clean.
It is obvious that this place is not staffed properly and it reflect on the overall physical condition of this hotel. It used to be well maintained but I am afraid it is not now.
The only good thing is the location and they know it.
It is very sad to see this place going downhill very fast .
Very poor value for money .

Come to to Royal Hawaiian to see the beautiful architecture! As one of the oldest hotels on Oahu it doesn't disappoint. The main entry, lobby and hallways are all stunning. We had two rooms in the historic tower and were pleasantly surprised with the tasteful renovations. The beds were great, the colors of the decor complementary, and the bathrooms (although very small) were very functional. The garden room we had was larger than the ocean room, with a nice sitting area off to the back. Both rooms had enormous closets, and I would suggest that a future renovation reduce the size of the closets and give some space to the bathrooms. The air conditioning worked well for an old hotel.

This hotel is on the beach, but I wouldn't really consider it a beach hotel, as the beach is very shallow and very short. We also had an ocean view, but it was more of a "roof view" in my opinion, with a small window that was chained to barely open. Also, if you are looking for a pool head elsewhere...the pool is a 20 foot round pool and very crowded. Waikiki Beach is fantastic though, and we enjoyed watching the surfers and checking out the shops. The location of the hotel is within walking distance to hundreds of top notch eateries and high end shops. If you are coming for the experience of classic Waikiki you will not be disappointed.

We stayed here earlier in the month for five nights. Upper floor Mailani tower, booked as elite gold members. Here’s the thing, this is just not a luxury hotel. It’s a solidly decent hotel, it definitely has its strong points, but it really doesn’t live up to its advertising or it’s historic, glamorous reputation.

The pros:

One of very few hotels with direct beach access in Waikiki

They make a good Mai Tai

Rooms in Mailani tower have nice views

Comfortable bed and frette robes in room

Convenient location

The cons:

The pool is very, very small and kind of decrepit.

Beach chair/umbrella reservation system is a real nightmare

At 7 am, there were used bandaids and various other litter on the beach near the chairs.

Rooms are solidly decent but certainly not luxurious in any way. You can see they really cut cost saving corners when they did their big renovation in 2008. So-so furniture, janky old school coffee makers, lower grade tub and bathroom fixtures etc. They don’t even do turn down service. Again, it isn’t BAD but it’s also not reasonable to charge what they do and have rooms like this. It kind of reminded me of a upper mid tier room at a Disney world resort.

Service is meh. We called down twice for someone to come fix a blinking light in our room and no one ever showed up, eventually we just removed the bulb ourselves. Our friends down the hall called for a room service menu and that never showed up either. Concierge doesn’t actually work for the RH, she was a contract worker through some other company and was really uninformed and unprofessional. Was much easier just finding and booking excursions on our own.

I could go on but the point is this: the RH coasts by on its big reputation and its virtual monopoly on Waikiki direct beach access. They overcharge by a lot and don’t really meet the standards of a luxury hotel. Stay here if you just want to be centrally located in Honolulu and be right on the beach, but keep your expectations on the lower side

We had stayed at the Sheraton a few years ago and wish we had stayed there instead. The checkin process was slow - 2 agents helping 5 guests while other agents were typing away on computer (hey, how about you help a guest instead.) Our shower temperature wasn't constant the first 2 nights and we called to switch rooms, but the front desk said, "Well I can't guarantee the new room won't have the same problem because other guests have complained about the same issue." WHAT! How crazy is that? Why don't they fix ALL the bathrooms vs waiting for guests to complain. Or maybe keep a log of which rooms have been fixed already. Anyway, they sent up maintenance who did fix the issue.

The pool is very small compared to Hawaii standards. It's like an oversized hot tub. While you can use the Sheraton family pool, you can't use the Sheraton's infinity pool. The pool chairs get all claimed by 6:30AM and they won't remove people until about 10:30AM, so good luck getting a pool chair between those times. However, you can rent 2 beach chairs and an umbrella for $60/day. Let's not forget the $40/night resort charge that you're already paying and the $40/night garage spot for your car.

I don't know how this hotel can be considered a "luxury collection" though when it's in the same category as the Sheraton. At least the Sheraton has plenty of front desk clerks, a much larger family pool and of course the infinity pool too.

We are are the airport having just left the RH. This was my first stay here. I cannot express how absolutely wonderful my stay was. I am 51 and traveled with my 84 year old mother who uses a lightweight wheelchair at times for mobility. We arrived early in the day, and luckily, our room was ready for us to check in (no wait at that time). We stayed in room 681 in the historic tower. The view was breathtaking! One thing we absolutely loved about the historic wing was how quiet it was. The bell staff was very helpful, quick and so friendly, both at check in and check out. We had the most amazing housekeeping ladies keeping our room clean and stocked. We had two bottles of bottled water in the room each day. The pool is small but we were never crowded. We also had no issues getting towels or lounges by the pool, and it was usually around 9 am when we went. We reserved two days of lounges on the beach prior to our arrival (about a month before) as well as semi covered lounges at the Sheraton next door one day. That pool was much larger but had many more families with young children. Good/drink service at both pools was excellent. Mark took care of our every need with a smile at the RH pool. He was wonderful. I was very impressed with the help through Waikiki Beach service who rent the lounges - one young man jumped to help my mother back from the sand to the pool area and it was so appreciated. We handled our check out the night prior to our early departure and this made the next morning much less stressful.
Tips: Read up on the small print re: resort fees, reservations for restaurants, lounges etc. Do your research. All resorts will charge a daily resort fee so don’t complain about it later; it’s part and parcel of a Hawaiian vacation. Make dinner reservations way ahead of your trip and keep them (or call to cancel). Reserve lounges and activities ahead of time. Most importantly, be patient and be kind. The staff are all working so hard to make your stay wonderful but “please” and “thank you” go a long way. Know that there are restrictions as to seating capacity and many places are still short staffed.

Booked a Historic Garden Junior Suite with two double beds. The front desk attendant Michael accommodated my request at check in which was a breeze. The room was very spacious with two bathrooms and three closets. Bed was very comfy and loved the toiletries. Housekeeping was amazing. They would ask to make up your room when they saw you exit in the am and unlimited FREE bottled water. Tons of towels never a shortage. Wifi worked great. Enjoyed the MaiTai Bar and chilling at the pool. Grounds are very clean and service was amazing everywhere. We were even provided a late check out and hospitality room. The flower leis and beads by valet were so beautiful we wore them at a wedding. When I come back this is the only place I would stay. Simply pure elegance.

It’s really something special to feel valued and appreciated in this busy world and this beautiful resort does just that.

The people that work here is what makes this place so special and that’s what I want to point out in this review.

From the moment you arrive you will see the smiling face of the best valet in the business and his name is Gerrard! He greets my family by name every time and goes above and beyond to be helpful.

Lenn is another person that makes this resort so special and he does everything he can to ensure that my family was comfortable and happy during our stay. He was even there to say goodbye when we checked out and makes us feel like we always have a home away from home at this meticulously appointed resort hotel. He is the ultimate professional and he represents the Royal Hawaiian perfectly with his combination of people skills and attention to every detail.

We stayed in room 318 during this visit and everything was exceptional. The crisp white linens are so soft and snuggly and the room is comfortable with a thermostat to control the temperature in each room of this two room suite. The feather pillows that we requested felt like sleeping on a cloud and the view from this room is gorgeous right at the tree line of the swaying palms. We could even see the tiny birds nesting in the trees.
This suite has two doors for easy and fast entry/exit convenience and also has a very large walk-in closet along with coffee maker, hot water pot, and mini fridge.

The chaos of the world melts away as soon as you walk into this spacious room and you feel relaxed whether you’re settling down for a good nights sleep or waking up to the lush view of the palm trees.

You should choose this luxury hotel for the service and amenities but you will choose to return to this hotel time and time again for the excellent staff members that make this place so very special.

Not that I am aware of, the beach chairs are from a seperate company, outside of the Hotel. The hotel has lounge chairs around the pools.

Hi again, I found this offer via Marriott for 40,000 points that you would get (should get you a free room at some Marriotts/affiliates as some require 25,000 points or more. Higher end properties such as the Royal Hawaiian may require much higher. In that case, sometimes you can use points and money to get a free room. This is for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card & costs $95 annually. Go to the Marriott Bonvoy internet site to see offer

We were at the small pool and lots of the chairs had an umbrella for free near them. Guessing maybe 15 free umbrellas. We did not rent a cabana by the small pool.
