Location: other than not being oceanfront, the location is pretty perfect. Centrally located in Waikiki with access to tons of shops and eateries practically right outside your door. There is a Starbucks and Jamba Juice attached, and we made use of the Starbucks every day. The tea shop up the block near Ross is awesome. Having a Ross so close was a godsend as literally everything you might have forgotten to pack is right there, and at very reasonable cost. Ross will even validate your parking for the attached garage (not Hyatt’s) for 2 free hours with ANY purchase. Tip: if you don’t want to pay $45 per night for Hyatt parking, the garage attached to Ross charges $15 for 10 hours. If you are out all day and only use overnight parking, this is a huge $ saver.
Room: our room was fresh, spacious and beautiful. The ocean view suites are the smallest suites, and I wish we had booked the Mountain View one which I believe is about 200sf bigger. The ocean view wasn’t worth it as it’s barely a sliver of ocean. Only complaint about the room was the tub, which had tons of black mold in the overflow slot, and made it virtually unusable. Some bleach would fix this. Bed, lines, towels, furniture etc were wonderful. Reusable water bottles a great touch. Room was filled with sunshine all day.
Food: we only tried breakfast buffet which was adequate, nothing special and cost $30 with tax/tip. My daughter only one who partook. I was fine with Starbucks.
Service: very nice, cheerful staff.
Why four, not five stars? I did notice some irate people at checkout a few times, and it always appeared to be over one thing: resort fee. This hotel is NOT a resort (not on beach, no real pool, no spa, no grounds, no room service, etc) and has no business charging a resort fee. We didn’t use one single aspect of it, and it sucks to have to pay for something you don’t use. If the hotel wants to charge for those “amenities“ listed under resort fee, it should be optional to guests to partake or not. It left a bad impression on us.
Overall, I feel that the Hyatt Centric does elevate itself above most 3-star hotels. We would be happy to stay here again!
The negatives: pool is literally 1 foot deep, not built for swimming or even a plunge on a hot day. Hotel restaurant closed (COVID restrictions). No door on toilet (though thankfully door to bathroom). Glass window from shower into sleeping area (we could lower a shade). Motion sensor light in bathroom shines directly onto bed when activated. The street entrance is on the ground level, while reception is on 8, which was a bit confusing on check-in.
At this price point, I would recommend for singles or young couples (at the stage of relationship where they can see each other use the bathroom) who want an urban vacation experience, but not for families.
The room: We got upgraded to a mountain view suite which was very spacious. However, there are no balconies in any of the rooms. So if you'd like a room where you can lounge outside on your balcony then this is not the hotel for you. Our friends also booked an ocean view suite, but as the hotel is situated a block or two away from the beach, the view of the ocean is blocked by other buildings. They had a very nice bathtub in their shower, while we had a shower only. They also had a bidet, while we did not. In comparison, our previous hotel had a great view of the beach and a balcony to lounge on, but the room was tiny.
The location: This hotel is very centrally located to all the great food spots, and there is a Starbucks Reserve right downstairs. Most of the places we wanted to eat were within a 7 minute walk. We didn't go to the beach from here as we did that at our first hotel, but it would probably be a 5 minute walk.
The amenities: The pool is very shallow, it doesn't seem very swimmable. There are lounge chairs inside the pool as well. I believe the resort fee also covers 1 day of cabana rental, but we never utilized it. The hotel provides beach gear like boogie boards and umbrellas, but some days when I woke up late I noticed there was no more beach gear. You may want to wake up early to ensure you get the beach gear you want. The free beach gear is a great plus, as at our other hotel we had to pay to rent the same things.
The service: The front desk was very nice and we were able to make requests via text. However we had a misstep with the housekeeping. When we checked in we initially decided we did not need housekeeping (they ask you this due to the COVID situation I believe), but they said we can request housekeeping when we needed it. The first night we had a spill on our bed, and so the next morning I requested to get our bedsheets changed. But they said the request needed to come in the previous night, and so I wasn't able to get it that day, but would I like to get housekeeping for the next day? To which I said yes. But housekeeping did not end up coming the next day either. They said they would look into why this happened and I could get housekeeping for the next day, but it was already my last night. So I never got housekeeping for my whole stay which was disappointing and added some frustration to our trip. I would suggest to get housekeeping from the beginning if they ask.
Overall, the hotel was a great value, but I think it is better suited to those who want to stay somewhere with a good location for food and shopping and won't hang around the hotel that much. I feel this hotel is not the best if you're looking to lounge around on a balcony or at a nice big pool by the ocean (which is what we mostly did at the first hotel), as this hotel doesn't have that.
We were upgraded to exactly the required room per the Hyatt terms, nothing more nothing less. Room was a nice size, with a few of the city (which you can honestly do without). Shower was a good size, and the products (shampoo, soap etc) were all fine. No special note, treat, or any recognition as a globalist in the room, which a lot of hotels do, and nothing really explained regarding benefits at check in. Breakfast is an obnoxious 0600 to 1000, so get up early if you want to eat.
The pool is kind of small and more of a very shallow place to sit in a chair in the water and relax, and the hot tub is a decent size, although it could have been a little hotter. Nice little deck for the pool area though and a nice place to relax.
The staff were watching the manager's dog, Nasa, while we were there and she was present in the lobby behind the desk, so extra points for that. Hooray Nasa! Lots of places nearby to eat, like the excellent udon shop that is super popular and the japanese food hall across the street.
Overall, if I were in Waikiki again, I would stay here again unless it was an insane price. Personally I would not pay more than maybe $250 max out the door and that would be pushing it. Really no complaints about the hotel at all. Truth is, I just don't care for Honolulu so my odds of returning are slim, but it has nothing to do with the hotel.
