Our family of four stayed in one of the Condo's at Roche Harbor over the weekend. I was so excited to stay here after hearing how lovely the resort is. While the scenery is beautiful, I was shocked at the state of the condo's. They were incredibly dated, the condo itself smelled, the cabinets were crooked, the lights didn't work, the coffee machine overflowed, both toilets filled up completely to the brim before fully flushing, the condo itself wasn't level, the deck was visibly tilted due to settling, and the spring mattress was broken on one side. We've stayed many places and was shocked at even the cheapness of the toiletries. Everything just felt grimy. The night before, we stayed in a yurt at Lakedale Resort and were wanting to go back due to the difference in experience. I would not recommend staying here. For the resort, would recommend that they invest back into the rooms - they need a lot of work!

The word “resort” might scare some people from considering Roche Harbor Resort, but it is one of the few resorts that have accommodations in all price categories, and from various eras. The newest accommodations are town houses built in what they call “The Village.” These will appeal to people who love granite counters, cherry wood floors, and other high-end furnishings. The town homes are large and will accommodate groups and families. Those with nostalgic leanings may want to book some of the oldest accommodations in the historic Hotel de Haro, some with shared bathrooms. The cabins provide respite from the Internet, as there is no service. But the front ones have a great view of the water. If you own a boat, you can simply tie up at the dock. But I chose to rent a one bedroom condominium. Judging from the construction and low-end furnishings, I estimate the condo buildings to have been built in the 1980’s. They are old, but the price is reasonable. The first floor unit in which I stayed had a view of a small lagoon, visible from the porch as well as from the dining area. The kitchen had everything one needs for cooking—pots, pans, plates, blender, microwave, knife set, and so on. There are so many things provided that there is no space for storing food except in and on top of the refrigerator! The appliances are very noisy, due to age and quality. The refrigerator runs more or less constantly. Noise aside, I appreciated that I could cook all my meals in the condo. In late March, it is a bit cold for “pandemic” outdoor dining. The resort complex has a well-stocked grocery store and two other gift shop/mercantile stores. There is an onsite cafe that serves breakfast and lunch. And an onsite fine dining restaurant. I did not eat at either. In non-summer months, the fine dining restaurant has limited hours. As with most lodging during the pandemic, Roche Harbor did not offer any housekeeping services, even though we stayed 9 nights. We were able to have trash bags and towels delivered as needed. For a stay this long, I am quite certain that no one would be in jeopardy if the housekeeping staff visited during the many hours we were hiking around the island. (I have stayed in other places that figured out how to safely provide housekeeping services.) All in all, I recommend a stay here. This part of the island is rather mellow during the March/April time period. If you prefer more action, visit in summer when everything will be hopping and crowded. If you choose to visit in the summer and you don’t have a boat, you can opt to fly (float plane or small plane), or make a reservation for the Washington State Ferries. You will need a ferry reservation during peak months. There are several worthwhile attractions to visit—Afterglow Mausoleum, San Juan Island Sculpture Park, Wescott Bay Shellfish, San Juan Island Distillery, and a number of hikes in the area.

The resort is a beautiful property centered on the historic Hotel de Haro, surrounded by a dramatic garden and marina as well as preserved lime kilns. We were very grateful that our room was generously upgraded for booking direct. The whole area was very tranquil and quiet in the off season. The grocery store was also surprisingly well-stocked for its size.

Tried to book a house for my family for 4 nights. I contacted the reservation folks and asked if there were any off season specials. There weren’t so I replied and asked if they could match the Expedia price which was 10% off homes so I could pick the unit. Anyway waited a few days and no one got back to me so I booked an AirBnb. I was surprised that the reservation folks at an upscale place like Roach Harbor night didn’t work a little harder for a potential customer looking to spend 2k especially in the off season and during a pandemic.

While our reservations line is open daily from 9am to 5pm PST, should we be on the phone, we provide a voice mail service for same day call-back. However, not receiving a return call back for multiple days seems like an error in our system. If you’d be so kind to reach back out to us and provide the number you called so we can follow up and ensure this error is not repeated it would be much appreciated. Additionally, we’d love to connect with you personally to apologize and provide an opportunity to you and your family for a future stay. While contractually we aren’t able to match our booking partners price without you going directly through them yourself, we’d be happy to find a solution for you that matches the vision of your families stay and budget. We’re available at reservations@rocheharbor.com or calling 360.378.2155 and asking for Lodging Reservations.
