"Fatboys" is derived from the character "Joe" from the book "The Pickwick Papers" by Charles Dickens. Joe-the “fat boy” consumes great quantities of food and constantly falls asleep in any situation at any time of the day; the Fatboys life revolves around drinking, eating, sleeping and making every conceivable effort to avoid work. Whilst at Fatboys Resort the customer becomes "Joe the Fatboy". Enjoy an ice cold bevy, a plate of fresh crayfish pan-fried in lime juice and butter, a game of pool, or simply kick back and be mesmerized by the myriad of tropical fish swimming underneath you. But being closly related to the writings of Dickens, there are of course many adventures to be had. Fatboys Resort, Bar & Restaurant is situated 100 metres out atop the crystal clear waters of Babanga island. A 10-minute boat ride from the airport and 15 minutes from Gizo, the provincial capital of the Western Solomons. We have 6 bungalows that offer you with spectacular views of an early morning sunrise watched straight from your bungalow. Fatboys Resort offers a completely unique hideaway and is the ultimate tropical beachside Reef experience. Our bungalows are constructed of traditional leaf and local hardwoods, which are designed to take advantage of the magnificent surroundings. Featuring four private bungalows and one Beach-House each with large veranda's capturing the seductive views of Solomon Islands famous Crystal Clear water and stunning natural scenery. Quality imported furniture and bedding will ensure your stay is better than anywhere in the western province. All accommodation is situated on the water's edge with a short stroll to Fatboys Restaurant & Bar located along our private jetty, 100m out over the reef. We certainly loved our 4 nights at Fatboys resort. We opted for the luxury over water bungalow and couldn’t have been more pleased with the choice. The bed is comfortable, it has a refrig and air con worked well. Snorkel right off the deck with an outdoor shower. We took two tours, the 3 island tour and we went to Kennedy Island where they had a nice bbq that day. Both were very nice. The snorkeling off Kennedy Island was the best.

I also went scuba diving with Dive Gizo. Their BCD sprung a link on the 2nd dive and I wasn’t comfortable continuing so I cut it way short. Thought they would waive the fee for the 2nd dive but they didn’t. But didn’t charge me for the rental equipment. I wasn’t super impressed with the five and had to battle some current. Snorkeling was more enjoyable.

The meals were all good with limited choices. One meal with chicken and rice wasn’t too good. Maybe overcooked? Or possibly a rooster, I don’t know. I read some reviews about the prices but I thought were fair with good portions. They may run out of things for example we ordered pancakes but they didn’t have any syrup.

We drank the rain water and didn’t have issues.

Some reasons for the 4 stars rather than 5:
No shampoo, just a bar of soap
They didn’t clean the room unless you brought it up
Sheets were rough with some stains
Hot water was a challenge. Would be scalding hot for a bit then no hot water at all.
No hot water for the bathroom sink

But these things were not a huge problem for us. The staff there are all very sweet too.

Be prepared to battle the mosquitos and other bugs at night. They have the net over the bed but somehow the little buggers seem to find a way in. WiFi only available at the restaurant. Download some shows on Netflix.

We took a few days after a busy workshop and it was very therapeutic! The staff are lovely and helpful, the food was good, the outlook is gorgeous. It is very relaxing but there are canoes, paddle boards and snorkeling equipment if you want to get some exercise and a bush walk to a local village which is interesting. The snorkeling at nearby Kennedy Island is very good due to the coral walls dropping down to deeper water, but the charge to cross over was a little high. We would go again.

Hi Debbie, Thank you so much for staying with us and thank you also for taking your time to write this review. It is our pleasure having you at the resort. Sorry if you find Kennedy island trip a bit expensive, it is the best price we can offer. We suggest you try out our kayaks or hiring one of our poly-boats next time. Really looking forward to seeing you again at the resort Thanks.

I had 6 nights in a over water bungalow just at the end of the jetty. The room was spacious, traditionally decked out and lacking nothing. Could snorkel just off the beach under the bungalow, and diving on nearby locations was fantastic. I ate like a queen with fresh seafood every night cooked by the ladies from the village. Plenty of activities on offer when not diving. Would totally recommend this resort.

While Fatboys was a great resort for the rooms, we have had an issue with paying both the deposit and then needing a refund. We were essentially double charged for our stay and over the past three months have had extreme difficulty trying to get a refund. We still have not received one. So for that reason, I would not recommend fatboys as we did not have any issues with our much more remote and rustic accommodations. It has really put a damper on what was a wonderful trip.

Had a great 7 days at Fat Boys. We were the first international visitors and the staff could not have been more welcoming. They made us feel like family right from the start and looked after us so well the entire time.

The bungalow was comfortable with ceiling fans that ran 24 hours, a little fridge and tea and coffee and milk (powdered)
There was no wifi in the hut but excellent wifi in the bar and restaurant and the meals were delicious and mostly fresh crayfish, squid and kingfish.
There was snorkelling, paddle boarding, kayaks, poly craft boats, island bbq’s and fishing trips and boat trips to other islands.
The nearest town Ghizo has shops and daily markets if you need to buy small grocery items.
Kids beware! There’s no TV 👏

Fatboys resort is built nicely in Solomon islands standards. The resort has a few single Cäbungalows and one dublex one. I was in the duplex.

The room is clean but a bit dark at night as their led lights are not that bright. There is no air con, but there is a powerful fan in k the ceiling. Unfortunately it has two programs where the less powerful is too weak and the better one a bit too strong for most nights. I guess the stronger one is the one dually better here.

There are mosquito screens in windows and surprisingly enough they are not tattered. However, walls and the ceiling have large gaps so it essentially kills the whole idea of mosquito screens. There is a mosquito over the bed, but check for any holes before sleeping.

The restaurant serves decent or good food, depending on the day. Menu is a bit limited, as can be expected on a small island, but it changes daily.

There is a good snorkeling reef from the pier at the moment overwater restaurant. However, I suggest you visit the nearby Kennedy island for excellent snorkeling and white sand beaches. They charge 360 SBD per boat for the ride, which is extortion given rhet Gizo trips are less although distance is much longer.

There is a small village in the island worth the walk. The walk is a pleasant one through rainforest without a risk of getting lost.

We recently stayed at Fatboy's for 11 nights, this was our second visit, our first one 5 years ago. It did not disappoint, as a well travelled family, our children, 21 years, 19 years and 16 years said it was their favourite holiday ever. We loved the snorkelling (highly recommend a trip to Njari Conservation Island - Fatboy's can arrange), scuba diving, the fresh seafood was incredible, with crayfish, mud crabs and bay bugs and fresh fish a plenty. The food cost is on the high side (average meal around $30+ Aus) but considering where you are and the access to fresh food we were more than happy to pay this. The breakfast was great - fresh fruit, toast and cereal and lots of options if you want to pay a little extra. The rooms are fairly basic but comfortable. We stayed in the Honeymoon Bungalow, which had AC which I loved! We were a group of 14 friends and family and everyone enjoyed it. The family caught lots of fish and we spent lots of time in the water. The Staff really do make it special, so many familiar faces from 5 years ago, the front of house team, Leah, Rodrick, Ashley and Calista and the new guy Peter looked after us well. Manoj the Manager as per last time catered to our every need and made our holiday one to remember forever.

The resort maybe comfortable but we came by sailboat for dinner and it was really terrible and the service was practically non existent. Very limited meal choices- that’s fine but then do them well. 3 x crayfish meals in garlic butter, which we had to ask for as the crayfish was so overcooked and dry and when that arrived we had finished eating , no vegetarian options so our friend had rice with the same wilted green veg on our plates. They charge top dollar which is the biggest problem . I feel bad for the guests as there is nowhere else for them to eat.

Highlight is the communal area over the water with the view and the snorkelling. Downside is the lack of attention to patrons. The staff are friendly but inattentive: we had to ask for toilet paper in the communal bathroom, we had to ask for more water in our rooms, we had to ask for someone to change the sheets after a few days, we had to ask for the mosquito nets to actually fit the beds (they never did), we had to wait for around 2 hours for our dinner order to be served on two occasions, The rooms are apparently going to be upgraded which will be nice as they are tired.

We stayed in one of the bungalows and it was clean and spacious. The staff looked after us very well. We dined on freshly caught seafood everyday and Manu was kind enough to arrange for some to bring back to Honiara with us! The staff booked a day trip for us to skull island which was amazing.

Our only complaint was there were 3 of us and only 2 hammocks to relax in!

Hello:) Sorry for the late reply. The difference between the couples bungalow and the honeymoon bungalow is that the couples bungalow is located right on the beach front, while the honeymoon bungalow is partly located over the water. The bungalows boat have their own balcony with stunning views over looking the ocean. Each bungalows have a double bed and a bathroom with hot water system. Thanks.

Hi Angel88, The marine life there is extensive and there are lots of colourful fish, plenty of clown fish and it's all directly there. If you stay at Fatboys you can use their little polycraft boats and take a 10 minute trip to Kennedy Island where JFK was marooned in WW2 after his PT boat was sunk. Very pretty place to snorkel, in fact all if Gizo is pretty awesome. The best thing about the Solomons is the weather is pretty much perfect all year round being only 6 degrees south of the equator. Water visibility is awesome, I hope this helps. Cheers.

Hi, just use the visa at the end of your stay. Also we had about $200 Solomon Dollars if you want to slip into Gizo. Can give Fatboys the cash you don’t use and the rest on your credit card. Hope this helps.
