Detailed Reviews
I guess we expected more from our Rainforest room for the price. It was incredibly dark and although asked, the reception staff did not replace one of the ceiling lights that had failed. The furniture in the room did not make good use of the space and there was little storage. The room designer was obviously more concerned with style than functionality. We stayed there for 2 nights. The location was good, but there are probably better value places to stay

For a one night stay, the apartment was fine. It would be advisable to look a few miles outside of town if you want a bed and breakfast in this area, but the place was clean, the hosts were cordial, and it is one block from town.

Stayed here last January and were very pleasantly surprised. A very nice large suite for very few dollars, comfortable, well equipped, the fire was welcome in view of the fact it rained constantly for 48 hours. That's what you get when you stay in a rainforest, I guess! Couldn't fault the motel at all and would definitely come back

Really comfortable. Punga Grove does exactly what it says on the tin. It's basic but spacious, easy and straightforward and the bed was uber comfortable. A no nonsense type of stay. The only negative is that the bedroom is upstairs so going to the loo in the middle of the night means a walk downstairs. That can be a little tricky in the dark!

stayed here for two nights . Fairly basic but good value for money. Quiet spot, easy walk to town, no view as the deck abutted the forest.
A helpful young girl in the office . We appreciated the launderette facilities.

Stayed one night.Ground floor unit which backed onto the forest!!
Had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable.
Had B and B(They may not do this as standard) and the breakfast was delivered to our room at the time requested. It was probably the best prepared breakfast I had on the whole trip!!

My partner and I had a great stay at Punga Grove, Franz Josef. We stayed in one of the "Executive Rainforest Suites". I wouldn't say that they're incredibly private nor that they back onto dense rainforest as the hotel's website suggests, but the positives far outweigh these inaccuracies. The rooms were great - really large, quiet and modern, with a nice big comfy bed, spa bath, fireplace, TV and DVD player, heating. Very clean. There's DVDs you can get from reception free of charge, and the hotel owners are more than happy to give you a good idea of what to do in the quaint little (but very touristy) township of Franz Josef. A little on the pricier side - if I was to visit this area again I might opt for some place cheaper, with less of the little luxuries - but a very pleasant stay.

Lovely cheerful welcoming staff set the tone for a very pleasant stop over in this great motel centrally located with a dramatic backdrop of mountains.
Our room, Tui, was spacious and comfortable and had a back veranda opening into a private rainforest style garden, peaceful and serene.
The king bed was very comfortable, there was a gas fireplace, a kitchenette and a big bathroom featuring a giant heated mirror that doesn’t mist up.
Only a few steps to cafes restaurants and other attractions.

We arrived in Franz Josef on a wet and miserable afternoon. We really appreciated the friendly welcome and the fact that we were shown to our room where a warm fire awaited us. The staff could not have been more helpful. As the weather continued to be poor we did not travel far and were content to stay in the very comfortable room. In better weather it would be nice to sit outside on the veranda surrounded by woodland.

We were warmly received by host Graham and were fortunate to have a ground floor south facing room. These rooms enjoy an outdoor balcony facing a small rainforest. Lovely feature. The room was clean and modern; typically motel, but in a warm nostalgic way. Graham was very helpful and accommodating, with great tips on the town. Franz Josef isn't a large town; all restaurants and shops are walking distance. Please dismiss the negative single contribution made below, we didn't get sick or become suspicious of any cleanliness matters -- it's a great place to stay.
