Punga Grove provides a great base to visit Franz Josef and Fox glacier's. We selected a luxury studio for two nights. The studio was immaculate and extremely comfortable. It featured a king bed, leather sofa, gas log fire, DVD, kitchenette, spa bath and underfloor heating (most welcomed in winter). In addition, the studio overlooked a rainforest and was extremely private. The room was very spacious and tastefully decorated. The owners of Punga Grove were very helpful and assisted us in deciding which glacier to explore. In the end we chose the heli-hike tour on Fox Glacier as it was slightly cheaper than the same tour on Franz Josef and longer in duration. I am fairly budget conscious (and not too keen on helicopters) but I would definitely recommend spending the extra money…
We had one of the superior rooms and it was delightful. The room was very comfortable with king size bed, T V, DVD player, Gas log fire, large sofa, table, terrace with chairs and a small kitchen area. The bathroom had a whirlpool bath & shower & was spacious. The hotel does not have a restaurant, but will provide a contintal breakfast if ordered the night before. Local restaurants are within easy walking distance. We would definitely stay here again.
Very nice place. We were forced to get a larger room than we needed, as the standard rooms were all full, but no complaints. The staff was great and very helpful, even after we had checked out. Location is great - right in the middle of town. It rained constantly while in town, and there was virtually nothing to do when all three of our Heli Hikes with the Helicopter Line were cancelled. Beware spending over one night in Franz Josef. Good food in town, and the Punga Grove was great, but other than the hike to the glacier there is little reason to come here or to stay long. And especially beware of booking a trip with the Helicopter Line in advance or planning your trip around it, since there is a good chance they will cancel the trip and not work with you on an…
Stayed here last January and were very pleasantly surprised. A very nice large suite for very few dollars, comfortable, well equipped, the fire was welcome in view of the fact it rained constantly for 48 hours. That's what you get when you stay in a rainforest, I guess! Couldn't fault the motel at all and would definitely come back
We stayed for 2 nights in one of the luxury suite (studios) at Punga Grove in September. The whole site was very well looked after and we were made very welcome. These suites are new and are absoultely top quality. We have no reason to doubt that the standard in other rooms will not be also very good though to be fair we did not see any. We got good off season rates but even at current rates these rooms would be good value. If you want to stay around Franz Josef this is a good option.
