Lovely location just outside Franz Joseph. A couple of restaurants provide a courtesy car to pick you up if you fancy a drink in the evening.
Breakfast was pleasant and simple.
Laundry provided all we needed with the benefit of an honesty box rather than coins.
The French lady (sorry don't know your name) worked tirelessly providing breakfast, clearing up, manning reception, answering queries and cleaning the rooms with another colleague.
It appeared that the quick turnaround of guests and lack of staff meant that housekeeping wasn't as thorough as it should be. There was lots of dust at a low level in our room, under the chairs, bedside tables and the base of fridge cabinet was stained. The bathroom however was spotless.
All in all a lovely, comfortable stay

This was a great place to spend a couple of nights. A couple of miles outside the town on the main road it had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. Room was really big and bright with a very comfortable bed, a table with 2 chairs and a couple of comfortable armchairs next to a fireplace. There is also a laundry on site which guests can use for a small fee. The place was managed by Franziska who did a wonderful job of managing the reception area and also was responsible for providing breakfast for the guests. She was very friendly and professional and happy to help with any queries.

Excellent clean, modern room with a cozy fireplace and an exceptionally comfortable bed!!!
It is 2-3 I’m outside the town but there is a complimentary shuttle bus, which lifts you at ‘Oasis’ and leaves you back after eating.
I would recommend to anyone seeking a quiet relaxing break away with fabulous views of the mountains..

I booked Franz Josef Oasis as a New Year’s Eve treat, expecting a premium experience, but it fell far short of expectations.

The room was dated and generic, with only one piece of art on the wall and minimal decor, creating a stark, uninspiring atmosphere that lacked any charm or sense of comfort. The bedside lamp and wall light didn’t work, and the table near the fireplace was unstable and poorly constructed.

The “fireplace” was just a noisy fan heater with fake flames, offering neither warmth nor ambiance. Noise was a constant issue. The fridge ran loudly, turning on and off repeatedly through the night, which was extremely disruptive. The bathroom fan stayed on for 10 minutes after the light was turned off, adding to the constant noise.

The bed was the worst part. The mattress dipped so badly in the middle that it needed two thick underlays but was still incredibly uncomfortable. At 50kg, I found it unbearable; anyone heavier would likely find it impossible to sleep on.

Privacy was another concern, as one window faced the neighboring guest’s car parked just a meter away. On top of that, when I went to close the curtains, part of them fell off the rail. While someone came promptly to fix it, I had to explain how to do it, which added to the sense of poor attention to detail.

Having stayed at The Anchorage in Fox Glacier for almost half the price, which was far more comfortable, charming, and welcoming, this stay was a huge disappointment.

Lastly, I’ve noticed a troubling pattern in the management’s responses to negative reviews. Rather than taking feedback as an opportunity to improve, their replies tend to be defensive, often justifying issues instead of acknowledging guest concerns. I hope this feedback will encourage genuine acknowledgment and improvements, rather than more excuses.

most dreary hotel I have ever stayed in, the rooms, the breakfast, everything is designed and made to yield as much as possible and cost as little as possible...it seems to be led by an etagère (who was friendly in itself) breakfast is strictly 1 hour between 8-9 am you can come and eat the simplest breakfast ever. if the room next to you uses hot water, you will have a cold shower. I think every hostel is better

Hello Safari. Most of our guests love the complimentary continental buffet , so I'm sorry it wasn't what you were looking for. Your shower complaint is a mystery to us as we have never had a comment like this before. An early breakfast can be requested, in fact, we are open to all reasonable requests, although there is one thing we cannot change, and that is dreary weather....sometimes it shines, sometimes it doesn't.....bad weather really affects peoples moods, that is for sure. Footnote: We would like to solve the mystery of the shower... we would appreciate knowing which room you stayed in, so that we can ask our plumber to check it. Could you please send a quick message on our website, that would be very much appreciated.

This was the most expensive place we stayed over an eight-day road trip on the South Island. It was the most disappointing in that the value for the rate wasn’t there. Only some rooms have AC (you have to ask), and when the clerk moved us from a king with fireplace to a king without fireplace but AC, he originally said the rate would be a bit lower, but then he said it was higher because of demand and that they were nearly sold out that night. He didn’t charge us extra, but we left before 7:30 and there were more than half unused rooms and only four other cars in the lot.

The main issue is that this was more expensive than super nice new places in Arrowtown and Dunedin but there was no kitchenette let alone a kitchen. Good thing I packed sporks so we could have granola and yogurt (having been warned by previous reviewers that the expensive breakfast was underwhelming). The bedside tables were a foot below the mattress, so that was awkward. The bath soap in the shower was the watery foam soap you get in public toilets. It was unsuitable for shaving. Would not recommend. We had to plan a last-minute south tour due to North Island flooding, so our options were limited.

Very disappointed with this hotel. The price feels about double what it’s worth. Breakfast wasn’t included either so feels really poor value. It’s located a long distance from the Franz Josef village so walking is not possible and a car is needed. Maybe a 10 minute drive but not really walkable with the long single track vehicle bridges that would need to be crossed.

There seems minimal staff here as one person serves both the reception and the restaurant leading to delays.

Only one hand towel was provided for the two of us (plus two bath towels) and despite being promised a second towel it never materialised.

Our room wasn’t cleaned during our stay and we were told, with the shrug of a shoulder, it must have been overlooked. So no restocking of toiletries, teas, loo paper and no cleaning of coffee cups etc. Just unacceptable at the price we paid.

Our tv had a total of nine channels none of which seemed to be main stream channels and any useful ones simply said ‘scrambled’.

On the plus side there are two washing machines and one dryer in a side house at minimal charge which could be useful.

Overall disappointed with the value and the location so would look elsewhere if ever returning.

Generally speaking we were happy with our stay at this motel. Our room was immaculately clean and overlooked the lovely garden out the back of the property. However for the price I would have been unhappy if we’d got one of the front rooms overlooking the car park. The bed was very comfortable, although it got quite warm at night and with no air conditioning. There are no screens on the windows and no screen door so letting fresh air in is problematic unless you don’t mind the bugs. There was an electric fan provided. The provisions in the room were minimal for a self proclaimed boutique hotel. No robes, extra towels or bowls, spoons etc to enable you to eat breakfast in your room. There is a continental breakfast in the restaurant for $22. The motel is about 5kms from town so no walking to dinner, but that didn’t bother us. It was pleasant, if overpriced, but I think New Zealand overall has become more expensive trying to make up for two years of being locked off from the world.

Perhaps it was us and our imagination when we read the word "oasis" and looked at the skillfully taken photographs. However, upon arrival the whole thing was a little bit disappointing. To manage expectations: Franz Josef Oasis is no hotel, it is a motel. At least if the definition of motel is that you park your car in front of your room and you're constantly looking at it through the window. The fireplace outlined in the room description in best travel agent lingo is a built-in fan heater with fancy lighting and the whirlpool bathtub can only cater for one person at a time. For a motel this would be quite okay, but then the prices would need to be adjusted to a motel level as well. We were really looking forward to enjoying a fireplace (even a gas heated one) and a nice soak in the whirlpool, insofar the reality was rather sobering...

This motel is located a short drive north of the township of Franz Joseph. The simple exterior is misleading as the interior is simply lovely - big and nicely decorated bedroom with big bright bathroom (with Jacuzzi tub). The king size bed is one the most comfortable beds I have slept on. The pillows are great as well. Free WIFI, Free parking and many channels on the huge flat screen TV.
Breakfast buffet was simple with a standard selection served in a very quaint dining room.
Check in and out was quick and professional. Thank you Jale.

I am not really sure , but the couple who run the motel were very helpful. I feel sure that they could have. If you can give them a call on 02035645165 ( + international code). The food there was excellent.

Yes - but please call in advance as the place is manned by only a handful of people. Early checkout is also possible - we left at 6 am and just left our key in the door of the room!
