Detailed Reviews
Lovely motel cottage up the back of town, only a short distance to town and many local walks. The staff could not have been more helpful and provided a town map on arrival with recommendations for restaurants and walks. The room itself was a good size with a small kitchenette and functional bathroom with good water pressure. The little balcony out the front provided a good spot to have lunch or read a book when it wasn't raining, with views over the surrounding mountains. Parking spaces were allocated for all cottages. This was the perfect place to base ourselves for 3 nights while we explored Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.

We stayed here two nights, arriving in sunshine and departing in a deluge. Our cottage, number 1, had a fine view of the mountains which enjoyed both indoors and sat on the verandah. Checkin is at the Terrace Hotel around the corner.
The motel is very close to all the restaurants, etc. We booked both a helicopter glacier tour and an Okarito Early Bird birdwatching tour in advance through the motel and didn’t regret either.
The room itself is spacious and equipped with a microwave, toaster and kettle in the kitchenette. There’s a small Four Square supermarket a few minutes walk away.
Everything was smart and clean and the welcome friendly. The wifi struggled for speed a little in the early evening, but you are in a remote location so that is to be expected.
The laundry is open from 1.30pm daily. $4 for a wash, $2 for 16 minutes drying. Change and laundry powder available from reception.
They do a free short glowworm walk from the Terrace Hotel reception every night come rain or shine if you want to see these magical creatures light up.
Most important part of the review... fresh, hot scones! A most unexpected bonus of staying here. Someone brought round a basket of freshly baked scones, jam and butter each evening and they were yummy! The motel gets five out of five just for those ;)

Booked a cottage for my partner and I - stayed in cottage number 1. Staff saw us when we checked in otherwise we didn’t hear from them (this was perfect for us though). Room was cleaned during the day while we were out 🥳
Nice shower, bathroom and amenities within the room. Although I’d say need to upgrade the tvs as they suck next to no channels would be fine if you can stream Netflix from your phone to the tv? Just an upgrade. Also maybe new table/chairs and duvet covers or something- didn’t take any photos as room was like not dressed well? Old brown covers & like weird circle velvet chairs?
All and all just what we needed for our stay something cheap n cosey BUT needs an upgrade.
Would stay again :)

Hi Lissy Thanks for the feedback and happy to hear you enjoyed the shower. Unfortunately fibre internet has not yet been rolled out to Franz Josef, once it does we are looking to upgrade all tvs to smart tvs. I am sorry some parts of the style of the room was not too your liking. We hope you can stay with us again in the future, when you do please book on our own website for our lowest prices. We hope the rest of your trip went well. Regards Logan

What a find! I recently stayed here for 3 days. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable owner. Experienced both rain and sunshine during my stay - where possible mornings were spent enjoying breakfast on the deck listening to the bird song, including hearing and seeing kea fly above and tui feeding in nearby trees. The cottage is super clean, shower has amazing pressure, cottage has everything you need, perfect location with mountain views, you are in walking distance to everything in the village including a myriad of different walks. I absolutely recommend staying here, and will definitely stay again. Thank you again 10 Cottages Team, 11/10.

We stayed here for 2 nights and whilst we did get a little confused looking for the reception it’s in a great location with car parking about 2meters outside the room.
The beds were super comfy especially after a 7hr road trip, great shower and nice little kitchenette.
Unfortunately I can’t comment on the views as the cloud cover was very low however can confirm there are mountains that do exist there somewhere.
It’s in a very peaceful spot.

Great location and also tucked away, so quiet. Close proximity to all areas of the town including some great walks up to the gorge.
No A/C, but room cooled down well overnight so it wasn't needed - might be different in peak summer months though!
Nice room and friendly owners with good recommendations for food. Suited us well for a 1 night stop.

We visited Franz Josef in early December, staying for 2 nights, fortunately just before the extensive road closures. Check-in was quick and easy, with friendly staff giving us some advice considering the torrential rain around. The cottages themselves are tucked away from the busier main road but still within a 2 minute walk from everything.
There is a parking space in front of each cottage. We stayed in cottage 10, with little view of the glacier however I'm unsure if this was due to the cloudy weather rather than the location. The cottage is spacious, we had a double bed and single alongside a small table with chairs. There was a good heater in the room which was needed in the cold evenings whilst we stayed. The bathroom is also spacious however the shower area is slightly dated. The shower curtain wouldn't reach all the way around from wall to wall as it wasn't long enough, meaning it was a challenge to avoid the whole bathroom from getting wet.
All in all a nice place to stay, which with a few upgrades would be ideal.

Hi We are happy to hear you found the check in "quick and easy" and the staff friendly. You stayed in a wheel chair access cottage - most of the cottages have glass showers and very different to your bathroom - thanks for the feedback, we will add another shower curtain. We hope you can stay with us again - when you do, please book directly on our website for our lowest prices. Regards Logan

I stayed here for 5 days and really enjoyed it. Staff very helpful and accommodating and it has a great atmosphere. Excellent location, 2 mins walk from town but it really private off a side street so feels like you are further away.
Can’t recommend enough!

Very clean studio apartment but they are small for three adults.
Kitchen facilities are limited to a microwave and fridge so cooking a meal is not really an option but there are a number of restaurants in town. There is a small terrace in front or to the side of each studio but they are overlooked so limited privacy.
The studio is fine if it is somewhere you just want to rest your head. But to be honest when you have scenery and walks in the area you want to spend as little time as possible in your room anyway and therefore these would present a good affordable option.

Hi Thank you for the feedback. We are happy to hear that you found your room very clean and enjoyed our location. From your comments probably for 3 adults one of our larger rooms with kitchens and private outdoor seating area might have been more spacious and what you were looking for. If your coming back you can view our full range of accommodation including out door spaces on our own website- which is also the cheapest place to book. We hope the rest of your holiday goes well. A fantastic 1 night stay. Room was exactly as pictured, spacious, clean and cosy with great ammenities. Nice and quiet location, with comfortable beds and a cute private deck to sit on. Loved the native West Coast plants and trees, we like being in a forest. Service on check in and check out was very friendly and took the time to advise on recommendations in the area.
Located right around the corner (150m) from the Tatare Tunnel walk with glow worms, highly recommend! As well as close walking distance to restaurants, bars, wild life centre, hot pools.
Wouldn't hesitate to stay again next time! Thank you for the great stay.
