Te Waonui Forest Retreat offers a tranquil escape, nestled close to Franz Josef Glacier and surrounded by natural beauty that guests often admire. The comfortable rooms and the serene atmosphere receive commendations, though the dining experience and room lighting receive mixed reviews. While the value for money is debated, with some finding the menu limited for the cost, the cleanliness of the retreat consistently earns praise. Service quality varies, with reports of both friendliness and occasional lapses in attention. Despite some critiques, the hotel's setting and diverse breakfast options remain a highlight for visitors.

We stayed here two nights while we were in Franz Josef and we had a great stay. First, the staff is really attentive and helpful. They went out their way at every turn to ask if we needed anything, provide information and serve the meals in the restaurant. I can't say enough good things about the staff here. On top of that the hotel is really nice. The room and bathroom are large and clean. The natural courtyard that your room looks out onto is very pretty and has lots of birds. The hotel location is very convenient and within walking distance to everything in town. It is located right next to the hot pools and glacier guides so that is nice. We had breakfast twice and two dinners here and they were all excellent. The dinners are of high quality and they serve something like 5 courses. While the menu was static the two nights ,with just a few entree options, that really did not matter as the food was so good you might want to get the same thing twice! They bring out a soup first then a starter then a pallet cleanser before the entree. This is then followed by the dessert. It looks like they currently have a cheese option before dessert on the current menu. They also serve warm bread with dinner that is really good. Breakfast has a ton of options and is served buffet style. The meals were included in the room price and I think only alcohol or sodas were extra. I know this place is pricey but our tour guide booked it as part of the overall price of the tour so we did not see the individual price. I probably would not have reserved a room at this price point but glad the tour guide splurged on this one as this was one of our favorite stays during our 3 week visit to NZ.

Loved everything about Te Waonui Forest Retreat. We don't usually book hotel resorts when travelling in NZ but chose to do so given the lack of ability to head overseas and wanted to support the local area after 3 day bike ride. What a treat! It felt like we were on holiday overseas until we stepped outside to view the gorgeous West Coast forest and glacier.
Surprised and very pleased to see there were complementary guest washing machine and drier - a real bonus after turning up with 3 days worth dirty biking gear.
The team at the Te Waonui were exceptional. They were friendly and passionate about explaining what was on offer in the area.
The rooms were a great size and complementary red wine on arrival plus a bottle of bubbles in the fridge was an added bonus.
The "two nights for one" deal that we booked made the resort unbelievably reasonable and the restaurant was superb - breakfast as well as dinner.
Will definitely head back there when we get the opportunity.

Despite the fact that our reservation was messed up, we were very happy to have stayed there. The room was spacious and well appointed. It has a balcony overlooking the bushes. The bathroom was spacious and has extra features such as underfloor heating, demister mirror, LED lighted magnifying mirror, spacious shower area and a bath tub. Having the underfloor heating in the bathroom switched on upon our arrival was a welcome touch. It’s obvious a lot of thoughts went into the planning and building of this luxurious property. We love the setting of the restaurant as well and decided to dine there. The food was good and reasonably priced. Guests were offered complimentary bread and hors d’oeuvre to start. It’s pity that it was so quiet.

This was our most expensive hotel during a 5 week tour of NZ at NZD1,000 (£500) per night. The so called Degustation menu consisted of 4 cold dishes prepared in advance and one hot course cooked to order. The service was appalling - we arrived at our allotted slot on time but were basically ignored for 15 minutes before being shown to a table. Another 15 minutes later (and after some prompting from us) a menu arrived....and so on. Lots of staff but all seems pretty chaotic. What should have been a real treat for two nights over the New Year period ended up being a total disappointment. We would have been so much better checking into a local motel at a quarter of the price and enjoying good basic food at one of the diners in town. I suspect that the hotel makes most of its money from bus tours with higher paying guests providing the profit on top. Rooms themselves were of a high standard. It is clear that we are not the only ones to feel let down as the reception staff did not have the temerity to ask how our stay was.

Dear 77gordonb Thank you for your review, my sincere apologies that our diner menu and service fell well short of your expectations. Just to clarify the menu does have cold dishes on the menu ,the cheese and deserts courses are served cold, with the first course being hot soup and the second and third courses with a choice of hot and cold dishes. The delay in waiting to be acknowledged was unacceptable and has been taken up with the restaurant management Kind regards BradM / GM Te Waonui Forest Retreat

Stayed at the resort on a special for 2nights including a massage n breakfast, had high expectations as labelled a 5 star hotel. We were very dissatisfied, hotel boasts a spa which consisted of 2 bedrooms as far as I could see not nice fancy spa area. The room we were originally given was bottom floor n very smelly musty mouldy smell which I thought was just the rainforest but I complained to reception they next day and was moved to a higher room which smelt normal! So a waisted night in the other room awake all night with strong smell! Breakfast was not great at all we both got full breakfasts n they were like warm n looked reheated on both occasions! I should have taken photos at the time. There was a lack of communication between reception n restaurant staff or the computer as we paid for our stay in dolly when checking n and were asked to pay for breakfast even though we told them we had a package deal then this got resolved!
Long walk to our room outside n very noisy in the mornings with cleaners coming with their trolleys super early at 8am so much for a lie in, I would not recommend n that was discount I can’t imagine laying full price!

The Te Waonui hotel is a lovely hotel, maybe not exactly 5* but pleasant with spacious nicely furnished rooms with balcony facing an inner courtyard with views of the rainforest (yes rainforest is all around). As we were with a tour group we had dinner at the hotel, which was a plated dinner, very elegantly presented and tasty enough, though really small portions. The buffet breakfast offered a good selection but nothing exceptional.

Te Waonui is central in Franz Josef but from every window in the hotel you would never tell - the hotel has been perfectly crafted to make you feel like you are in the middle of the rainforest with forest views from every window, where as in fact you are a matter a meters from the town centre and main road but you would never know and the retreat is very peaceful.

The staff were all very pleasant and if we hadn’t just experienced the levels of customer service at The Rees in Queenstown the night before chances are I wouldn’t be making this as a point, but it just felt like all the staff needed a little more training or support. I don’t want this to sound like a bad review as its certainly not but there is customer service that is everything that is required and then there is customer service which feels really special and the Te Waonui didn’t have that extra step. On our check out morning we waited over 45 mins for our breakfast to be served, I assume there was an issue in the kitchen but there was no communication of that. Speaking of the food, I cannot fault the dinner and breakfast offerings with the Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rate, the menus were superb. I can understand the thought behind table service for breakfast but I really feel you can still offer a 5 star service breakfast and still offer a buffet style which would help things somewhat in the mornings.

The rooms are very nicely appointed and we certainly appreciated the nods towards sustainability, with this in mind though the rooms are very dark and woody to reflect the surroundings but needed the lights on quite often which is a shame as if they were decorated in a lighter style then there would be less need to use the power as much, albeit the bulbs are all LED but using natural daylight would help lower power consumption even more.

The room keys are absolutely unique and I’ve never seen this before - it was a nice touch. I won’t say what it is to spoil the surprise!

Would I recommend Te Waonui? Absolutely - it’s a unique property within the village and is certainly a beautiful place to stay. Are there a few things that they could improve? Yes but none of those are so bad as you would leave not having enjoyed your stay. Would we stay there again? I’d like to think so!

Food was surprisingly good. Staff was very friendly but they need more training; little things like pouring sparkling wine into a champagne glass not a white wine glass. If you are going to charge me a $25 corkage fee you should probably A. be able to open my wine and, B. at least offer to decant it. I had to ask for a corkscrew and they brought me a beer bottle opener. We eventually got it sorted and I was left to open my own wine. Not exactly sure what the $25 corkage fee was for. But I would recommend the place for a stay over if you are driving from Christchurch to Queenstown (or Glenorchy as was our case). The drive is too ambitious to do directly (over 10 hours) and enjoyably. The room was rather small but this is the nether regions and there aren’t a lot of options. From everything I could gather, this is the best stay around.

Hi John Thank you for your review and your comments on our restaurant offerings. The corkage fee is for alcohol that is brought into the restaurant by a guest as we are a licenced premises.I must apologies that we did not have a cork screw fit for purpose and was eventually resolved by yourself. Corks in wine bottles in New Zealand are becoming rarer by the year and unfortunately the skill of opening these bottles is a skill that is also becoming rare. Fabulous hotel with terrific facilities. Restaurant is relaxing with views of native bush and the staff are authentic, friendly with good food being presented.
The rooms are of a good size, warm and with comfortable beds. Your balconies all look out onto native bush.
The Gem we found was our front office manager Umesh. He made the tourist spots come alive for us as well as getting us the best prices for Heli tours. He knows this area so well and is passionate to share it with you.
