Stayed here while we started “working” for Em. First off she NEVER paid us for our hours worked -considering they charge 400+ dollars a night she couldn’t afford to pay her minimum wage staff who she had work 12 + hour days. When asked to sign a work contract she laughed and ridiculed us... Secondly, she verbally abuses the staff. Third, the lodge is completely overrated and overcharged and creepy. During our short term there the wifi never worked, she left the lodge during the day without training her staff on how to check guests in. My suggestion - stay elsewhere for half the price and double the hospitality (and don’t support a local who doesn’t pay her staff)

This place is closed but conveniently took our money when we made the reservation. I know that booking websites sometimes automatically renew the listings without the owner even knowing but they actually took the money and there’s no excuse for that. We had to go back and fourth with Exepedia to prove that they’re not even opened before they issued us a refund. Should I mention that the hotel itself looks like it came out of American (New Zealand in this case) horror story show-sooooo creepy and weird Thank god a hotel nearby had available rooms and we were able to stay there instead otherwise we would have been sleeping in our car.

Response from HukawaiLodge, Owner at Hukawai Lodge
Responded 23 Jun 2019
Hukawai Lodge, is my private home. When it is open, it's open for max 3 months per annum. Your photograph showed a Lodge that looked like it was closed, because it was closed. Had the Lodge been open, it would have looked as it does in all other photographs that show it open. Trivago was aware the Lodge was not open but at their end whether an individual, a team or the software itself, opened the rooms. My first inkling as discussed with you was when you both arrived. With regard to how payment happens - You pay Trivago, they take your money, AFTER YOUR STAY, they pay the accommodation. With regard to your booking, it was between Trivago, who had made the error of opening Hukawai Lodge and yourself. Thank you for including in your review the offer of two nights accommodation free at Hukawai Lodge but without the service or breakfast Hukawai Lodge is known for.

Booked through booking.com @ $400 /night and stated last room left so we booked as knew accommodation in the area was tight. 2 other couples stayed that night and so was not booked out as stated by booking.com and we were the only couple who stayed the next night. Arrived and after waiting 10 mins had to search out back for some one to book us in. Run by backpackers who try hard and are friendly and is owned by local farmers who were obliging when we asked to cancel one of our 3 nights and did drop the price to $300/night and included breakfast. Room and bathroom very small, TV still not working 2 weeks after someone else noted earlier in March wasn’t working due to storm and cord ran around the wall. Bar not open as would have expected in a Lodge. Far from 5 star standard accommodation we have stayed in across the world. Breakfast was appreciated as not initially included in the $400/night price tag. Stay again or recommend- no

Response from HukawaiLodge, Owner at Hukawai Lodge
Responded 23 Jun 2019
Thank you for your comments. First, Hukawai Lodge is not a 5 star establishment. The aim is to become 5 star. Second, there should be no surprises. The ensuites are small except in the rooms we are required by NZ law to provide for wheelchair access. Photographs all over the net show this. Further, The Lodge is run by me, there is an Asst Mgr and a number of cleaners and wait staff. As with all other accommodation and food establishments in a place like Franz Josef, the majority are temp staff and in our case, for the period Hukawai Lodge is open. Finally, I don't advertise breakfast. It is meant as a surprise for when you arrive. I make this available to all staying in Hukawai Lodge accommodation which includes three Holiday Homes. Last, 3x nights is a long time to spend in Franz Josef.

Type Smaller, boutique hotel Location Less than 10 minutes out of town. Upon arriving for the first time the lodge can be hard to find, but there are a couple of signs pointing you in the right direction. It's set off the road quite aways, but you can still see it from the main road. From afar, the lodge may seem a bit creepy, but the inside it is very inviting and Em is a very warm host. Room Room darkening shades, but they cover the window vents which limited the air flow. No air conditioning, but a fan was good. Fridge. Nice soaps. WiFi signal spotty. We had room ‘Patrick,’ with Mountain View’s. Service Em was a great host and will work hard to make sure you have a nice stay with her. Loved hearing the background on the lodge and her plans to improve the property. When the cable was out because of a recent storm, Em brought out multiple boxes of DVDs! She also greets everyone with a welcome bottle of sparkling which was nice. Food/Breakfast included Cold water and milk was included in our fridge. We did take away (a nice way to unwind after busy days and not deal with the busy town), and Em let us utilize her dishes/silverware to have a nice meal in. Breakfast may or may not be included depending on how you book. We had eggs, fruit, fresh juice, coffee and tea. It was tasty, but breakfast service took awhile the second morning. The tea selections are awesome! Stay Again Yes

This post is a bit different. I didn't actually get to experience staying here but I had to write to let people know how helpful these people were. Because of a mix up with our travelling mates, I mistakenly booked for two nights instead of one. Turns out I couldn't change it to one night because of the dates and Arn was wonderful in getting me a full refund when it didn't look like that was going to happen. He went out of his way to help me and I will be forever grateful and if I am ever back in this part of the world i'll make sure I do stay there. Robyn

The owner could not have been more attentive or inviting. We were shown around the farm and ate a brilliant homemade breakfast. Everything is done with sustainability in mind and the location is amazing with a backdrop of mountains. Loads of wildlife around (lots of interesting birds) and farm animals and a short drive into the main town and glaciers. Highly recommended.

An imposing home that is a throwback to old-fashioned service and comfort. The photo we booked on did not do justice to the scale of the property and home. Clearly a lot of attention has been put in and we would happily come back to stay. Our room was the equivalent of a 5 star hotel with the freedom of open spaces and views. It was a truly unique experience to stay. My GF got be a farmer for an hour and feed animals such as giant rabbits. The food is curated by the owner and it was commonplace to find two different cakes made for the day along with breakfast(farm to plate) and fresh baked bread. A huge alcohol collection including many vintage champagnes, wines and whiskies were on offer to retreat into the front room complete with piano. The owners were down to earth and genuinely excited to have guests and all staff seemed very eager to please. I would not hesitate recommending a stay. The owners have many connections in town and we wished we had not pre-booked our sightseeing as we could have saved some time and money. A very beautiful place to visit.

This cosy lodge is located just a mile away from the Franz Josef downtown area. The rooms are blissful, replete with a cosy bed, an exotic bathroom and a small kitchenette. The lodge also has a restaurant and a lounge area with a piano and a large television. The views from here are amazing. The mountains right behind the lodge, and the front overlooking the beautiful Lake Mapourika. The owner is very hands-on. She actually made bookings, reservations, cancellations etc. for us. The restaurant serves a good continental breakfast, and will be opening soon for meals too. The eggs and veggies are all organic and sourced from the animals and the plants on the property. A must stay at Franz Josef, away from the bustling activity in the town, but still not too far away to make you miss out on the fun.
