We stayed here one night. Franz Josef Glacier is a nicer place to stay, but we wanted to be positioned at Fox Glacier so we were better positioned to do the early morning walk to Lake Matheson. Many of the accommodation options in Fox are closed due to COVID, others seemed to me to be ridiculously expensive. This place looked okay on paper. I booked on line. When we arrived our first impression was that it was closed. The entrance looks unkempt and the car park area is full of weeds. However there was a woman behind the reception counter. The first thing she wanted was for me to pay in cash, because their eftpos machine was not working. Needless to say I did not have enough cash - who carries much cash around these days? I asked her if there was an ATM in town, but she did not know. I logged onto their wi-fi to find for myself that there is no ATM in Fox Glacier, the nearest being in Franz Josef. We were not driving back to Franz Josef to get some cash! On reflection, at this point, I should have said we would go elsewhere, but instead I offered to try and get some cash out in the town in conjunction with buying a meal. We were allowed to drop our gear in the room and we drove back into town (hotel is a little distance outside the township). Not many options for a meal, but we found a very decent burger and chips at a cafe. But they could not provide me with the amount of cash I needed for the hotel. Back to the hotel, to be told the eftpos had been fixed - presumably by the guy we saw arriving as we left to go back into town. So we paid for the room and settled in for an early night. We were the only occupants. The owners/operators didn't appear to live on site, so we must have been the only people in the building overnight. There was absolutely no sign of life and it was a bit spooky. They did not provide any phone number to contact anyone if we had a problem. The rooms are nice enough - spacious and comfortable, with everything you need. There was mould on the curtains. The hotel restaurant is of course closed at the moment, thanks to COVID. Reception hours were something like 9am to 7pm. We left in the morning about 7.30am. Not a soul to be seen. We left our room key in the box on the reception counter, unlocked the main door to leave the building and departed. Had to leave the door unlocked. This was not a pleasant experience, but I am sure it would have been better if things had been "normal", and COVID was not hurting everything. We would definitely not consider returning to this hotel.…
Dropped in here as wanted an early start to visits Fox and Franz Glaciers.. this is 5 minutes from Fox Glacier Car Park so great, also only 5 minutes from Maddison Lake too. Smooth check in and guy (Manchester) on reception was super helpful.. Recommending everything from time to go the Glacier to the Visit of the Glow Worms and the lake and places to eat.. Top Man!! Room was super clean fresh light and airy huge en-suite shower room fresh towels .. kettle coffee tea hot choccy in room fridge too. Internet dropped off at 23H.. other than that 😀 Excellent facilities and location Highly Recommend
Hotel room is clean and room is spacious. Fast wifi and plenty of free parking. Mike at reception was friendly and nice. This is a great place for a stopover in Fox Glacier as we travelled through South Island. It’s a short drive to Lake Matheson and the Peak Viewpoint and not too far from the glacier access road. The host and staff were helpful and responsive and we appreciated that they accommodated changes to our booking. I would recommend staying here.
Worst experience ever!! The WiFi is very bad. Don’t come here in winter. I come here with a 22-people group and “no room” has a functional heater. It’s suck!! We already reflected to the staff, yet she just told us to wait and claimed everything is working alright and then she suggested us just left for dinner. We also asked her what if it still not warm. She said she will be around no worries. After we came back from dinner... she left....No one is at the reception and no one can find her or help us. Lier and cheating the foreigner. Very bad!
not sure why the bad reviews? its a short walk from town, that makes it a quiet place to sleep, my room was very nice , i couldn't believe how nice for the price , Shame the restaurant isn't operational. The office staff was friendly, even offered to carry my bags .will definitely be back next trip. The view of the mountains on sun rise was breath taking.
The High Peaks hotel in Fox glacier was outstanding. The rooms were so big and comfortable. the bathrooms were big and great too. Everything was great. The location was good to, 2 km from all the restaurants and cafes. Lots of parking. only problem I had was with the payment I asked the hotel not to charge my card despite it being mentioned that no pre payment was required, this was because we were 5 individuals booked together, hence we were all going to pay individually. However despite assuring me that they would reverse the charge on my card, they didnt and at checkout time 830am there wasnt anyone at the hotel so we just had to leave the keys in a box at the reception. But payment issues aside, the hotel was great and would stay here agin in a heartbeat and recommend this place to anyone.…
Comfortable back yard and basic equipment provided. I would not say it was clean enough. There is no electrical socket in one bedroom or any bedside table in both bedrooms, which was real inconvenient.
The hotel is situated halfway between the main road and restaurants and Lake Matheson. So depending on the weather, you may need to use the car to go and eat. The service is quite basic but the hotel and room was sparkling clean and there was an amazing shower and it was really comfortable and spacious
I did not like the approach of the hotel management. This is not the way they should do the business. We could not reach the hotel because of the mud slide which happened the previous night. The road was closed and we had to re-route as well as find another hotel. High Peaks hotel refused to refund the amount paid for the hotel room. They offered to book a room some other night (of course depending on the availability) but we were tight with the time as we had to leave New Zealand in a couple of days. I wrote one more e-mail to the hotel concerning the refund but they even did not bother to answer. This is not fair.
Overpriced for what is offered at $195nzd. Bathroom unclean with mould and dirty used facewasher hanging in shower. Toilet has stains. Teacups had not been cleaned. It is the only accommodation we stayed in in Nz without a toaster or microwave. Did not even have any plates or bowls. Very disappointed, I would not stay here again and not recommend it to others.
