With it's fantastic location and views of Mounts Cook and Tasman, the accommodation could not be better named as mist descended to provide a dramatic backdrop to our stay. Our hostess, Allanah, took time to help us orientate, provide tips on viewpoints, recommendations restaurants and provide a hearty breakfast.

A comfortable B&B for our one night stay but wouldn't go so far as to say its luxury or boutique.
The room was clean with nice views to the mountains when waking up in the morning.
The host was welcoming and very helpful with dinner recommendation (Matheson café) and also convincing us to get up early for the walk around Lake Matheson (did not disappoint).
Overall a comfortable stay.

If its not raining, the glaciers, views and activities around Fox and Franz Jospeh are stunning. It rains a lot (and we mean a lot) in this part of the world, so you really want somewhere nice to hole up and sit it out. Misty Peaks is a lovely B&B/hotel in Fox Glacier. Just on the edge of the settlement, it has fine views towards the coast in one direction and the mountains in the other. As well as being perfectly situated for seeing, hiking up, or flying over the glaciers, it is easily walkable from the town centre (or a couple of minutes drive), also very handy for beautiful Matheson Lake and the eerie Gillsepie's beach covered in driftwood. The downside is the sandflies, which we encountered here for the first time on our way South, but which we soon realised populate the whole of the West Coast. Take bug spray if you go to the Lake or the Beach.
Our room was lovely, well decorated, extremely spacious and very well serviced. There is a lounge and dining area where guests are welcome to hang out, read, watch tv, drink tea and coffee etc. Pre-dinner drinks and nibbles are complimentary, and dinner is optional - tasty and nicely prepared - taken round the dining room table with the other guests. Good breakfasts.
Dave and Lee are great hosts, and take every care to make sure their guests are well catered for. As well as making all our bookings for us (and changing them for us as we changed our minds about things), this extended to supplying ice packs and sympathy for a sprained calf muscle.
We didn't think there was much difference between Franz Joseph and Fox as towns to stay in - its worth noting that the weather can be very different at the two glaciers, and if you are staying at one and its raining, you might be able to catch good weather at the other - just a short drive away.

We had asked in advance of making the reservation about having an early breakfast so as to go to the glacier walk which starts at 8:35am. When we checked in the wife gave us a rushed intro to the room and informed us that breakfast was at 8am. She was quite adamant about it although her husband who was actually doing the cooking accommodated an earlier time so we didn't have to rush what was supposed to be a leisurely experience. She also made it clear that the included glass of wine would be at 6:30pm. As we were on an early schedule we just went into town for dinner. This supposedly upscale B&B has almost no place to put your things in the bathroom and no good coffee in the room which even the cheap motels have. Given this owner's attitude I don't know why she is int he B&B business at all. She made us feel like intruders and a bother. The poor husband is quite nice though. Too bad since the building is fine if they fixed the bathroom issue.

We’ve just returned from a 4 week holiday in NZ and found this to be one of our favourite stays. We were particularly impressed with the location, and the friendliness of the owners.
We had a room facing the base of Fox Glacier and what a sunset. We had a meal with Dave and Lea that evening and it was excellent - one of our best. Dave shared some of his secrets for the excellent meals with us. Be sure to try his sticky date pudding which by the way was fantastic.
Dave booked a Helicopter ride for the next morning and that was most definitely one of the highlights of my trip.
Dave and Lea thanks for an excellent stay, just wish we had planned to stay longer.

Stayed here for one night in the Gillespie Suite. The room was nice and cosy. The toilet looked newly furnished and the shower head had a strong water pressure which is great. The owner Sytze was a friendly host and he made us a delicious breakfast. We like the warm and lovely decor of the living room and kitchen.

Misty Peaks -- yes, on a good day you can see misty peaks in the near distance from the yard -- is a very comfortable, convenient place to stay while exploring the Fox Glacier and surrounding area. Our very large room was spotless, with all the comforts of a first-rate hotel, set in a B&B. Our hosts were extremely gracious and helpful. The breakfast was special. Go there!

Paying $410 a night we expected more than a surly greeting, hard selling of trips and cheap pillows.
But that is what greeted us within the first 5 minutes of arriving.
We'd paid for the biggest room, which to be fair is a decent sized room. It is unfortunate that they make no mention of the helicopter launch pad that is located outside the window at the edge of the garden.
I think my biggest disappointment is the expectation that the bathroom should be serviced and cleaned each morning of stay for a paying guest. The only thing that happened in ours was the changing of the bin, despite the fact we had folded our used towels and placed them on the floor next to the bath tub indicating we would like clean towels.
Neither had the shower been cleaned or wiped down from our use.
These are standard expectations regardless of hotel/b&b, and you shouldn't be expected to go find your host to request clean towels.
The add insult to injury, upon paying the day before we left (we were requested to as it would mean their life easier the following morning as they would be serving breakfast) I presented the same credit card used to book through Hotel.com - standing next to their office desk I heard 2 photo camera clicks. Concerned what was happening as I could see around the door screen I asked if a photo had just been taken of my card details to which I was told it hadn't, although upon further pressing and explanation it transpired they had taken a photo using a credit card app that didn't store it and was a single time use. This was explained very defensively, and to be honest should have been explained prior to actioning the payment app out of my sight.
All in all this was our worst accommodation in New Zealand, as the high price point set our expectations accordingly. Little things like bottled water were not even provided. Even at their wine & cheese intro we were informed 'the first glass is free, you may purchase more', which considering 50% of our party don't drink, I was driving so wouldn't drink, really needn't have been said as it felt like yet another upsell opportunity.
Apologies, but aside from the convenience of being in Fox Glacier and close to lake Matheson, I would not recommend staying here and would encourage looking at other accommodation options that offer better value, better room servicing and a friendlier environment.

We recently stayed in the Honeymoon suite at Misty Peaks. The room itself was spacious, and included a lounge area, walk in robe and large bathroom with spa bath. The bedroom area had a set of doors which backed into a verandah, with views of the hills beyond. There were a couple of small issues. Firstly, potential guests should be aware that the honeymoon suite is closely located to a helipad, where scenic flights are taken to fox glacier. This provided some disruption until night fall. Secondly, we appeared to have checked in just as the gardener was getting started with some intensive activity. For two hours in the mid afternoon, as we attempted to relax after a long drive, a man on an extremely loud ride on mower rode continuously past on the grass outside our room window/ door entrance - uncomfortable with the man seeing directly into our suite, we were compelled to shut the curtains for the best part of the afternoon. I appreciate that the garden work had to occur - but this might have been better scheduled after checkout and before checkin in order to minimise disruption to guests. Breakfast is fine, and includes the usual preserves, bacon and eggs and standard brewed coffee. In order to increase the vaue proposition for the room price, it;s suggested that some effort could be made to incorporate local produce into the breakfast menu / some creativity with cooked breakfasts and a lift in the standard of coffee served. The main "congregation" area for breakfasts, complimentary drink/nibbles at 6 pm and dinner is in the kitchen/dining area of the owners' section of the house.
Sitting at the owner's dining table, however, there is very much a sense that you are in another person's private home, with personal decorations - christmas teddy bears, trees and other family decorations etc around the place. We did not stay for dinner. Internet is free and of a reasonable speed. All in all, an ok stay, but nothing exceptional for the price. We stayed in a number of other B&Bs in the South Island which to us, appeared to represent far better value for money.

What a wonderful B&B in Fox Glacier. Such nice hosts. It was wise for us to stay for dinner, because options in town were quite limited. We had wonderful conversation with two other Australian couples. Fun to socialize!
Room was pristene and clean and beautiful. We loved it and definitely this was one of our best stays on our trip, and likely the best option in Fox Glacier.

Hi
Misty Peaks is a fabulous place to stay and it's next to the Heliport at Fox Glacier so you can just walk a few steps and your by your helicopter! Fabulous views of Mt Cook and Fox and Mt Tasman from your bedroom windows t oo.
Yes all the rooms are next to each other so you won't have a problem. The hosts.... if they're still there (Lee and Dave) are wonderfully welcoming. You will love it.
Have a great time
There is a small shuttle bus who would bring you down to Misty Peaks and collect you again and take you back in the morning. You can arrange this with the bus driver. It is approx 1 km from the village only. Regards Lea Bentley owner
Hey- we've travelled this route in all seasons. It's winter. Right now they're predicting a ton of rain--- but they've already had snow this season. We were last in the West coast to Queenstown in Dec. it was grey, rainy and we drive through clouds. But we had beautiful enough breaks here and there. I was there mid July a couple years ago--snow big time. But beautiful. I didn't need chains on the rental just due to great luck.
BTW--best to book tours of Doubtful Sound from Queenstown. The road to Milford is blocked a lot by snow/ slides etc.
have a fun trip
