Hotel Kverna in Skogar is located in the building of an old, closed school. It was built in 1949. The correct name would be Hostel. Our room was equipped with two single beds placed against the wall with an aisle in the middle, an old wardrobe and a small desk. The toilet and bathroom are shared by the entire floor. The hotel advertises a restaurant, sauna and spa on flags near the hotel. The restaurant serves breakfast only and is locked for the rest of the day. The breakfast buffet is sufficient, but nothing amazing. The indoor pool is drained, dirty, and on its sides there is a storehouse of all kinds of things. The sauna is in a barrel in front of the hotel and is out of order. The only functional facility is the hot tub.
There is dirt everywhere in the hotel - on the windowsills in the bathrooms and changing rooms by the pool, on the heating radiators in the room,... The outdoor area around the hot tub is not maintained, weeds are growing through the mats. One common room for the entire hotel (the size of a former classroom) is equipped with two dining tables, 10 chairs, 3-4 sofas and a children's corner. There is a small microwave and a small refrigerator. Cutlery and plates must be requested at reception.
The whole hotel is musty, especially in the rooms, if you don't air them often, which is impossible in cold weather. We stayed here for two nights and it was by far the worst hotel not only in Iceland but of all the hotels we have ever stayed at.

This is a former school sloppily turned into a hotel. I think hotel is pushing it. It's a fancy hostel at best. If you've been to college it's likely very similar to your freshman year dorm except somehow much smaller. My wife and I were so exhausted from trekking all over that we just put in ear plugs, stacked the luggage in front of the door and tried to sleep. I actually got a fine night's sleep. The bed was fine, the sheets appeared to be clean and the noise around us was able to be blocked out by the ear plugs we brought. The facility has nothing in the way of amenities other than the free included breakfast which was unremarkable but acceptable. The place is in a great spot and with an almost total gut-job remodel, could keep pace with the quality most of the other accommodations around it. If you're desperate to save money, there are savings to be had but if you are wanting to use the bathroom without waiting and showing in water which does not smell like egg farts, look elsewhere.

Room Tip: My best advice is read all the reviews before deciding the cost savings is worth it.

This place was not great. It’s a bit rundown and not very welcoming. An old building like this has the potential to be charming or rustic with a little effort, but as things are it’s more sketchy and frankly creepy. There are quite a few guests there relative to the number of bathrooms available, especially given that one bathroom had the sink out of order (no sinks in the rooms). With the high volume of guests in limited bathrooms, some additional effort could be put into keeping up with maintaining the cleanliness of the bathrooms. Waiting 10 minutes for hot water is also less than ideal, our door did not latch, and the linens were alarmingly itchy. Some very simple fixes could be helpful in making this place a comfortable stay in a fabulous location, but it just does not seem like the effort is there.

Very close to the Skogafoss waterfall surrounded by nature. It is a school building converted into an accommodation facility. The rooms are modestly furnished, spotless and heated. The shared bathrooms are spotless and always free (like having the bathroom in the room). Buffet breakfast provided with sweet and savory, abundant. There is a common room for those who want to eat their things for lunch and dinner, with microwave and fridge. You can leave your groceries in a communal fridge (no one touches anything) and it heats up in the microwave. You can bring and eat whatever you want.
Two miniti there is also a non-cost restaurant (considering Icelandic prices).
The service is good, the staff is friendly and helpful.
Lower room prices than other properties.

We stayed for a night at Hotel Kverna and it was just not worth close to $400/night. First of all, the picture that was used to market this properly is very misleading, it is a repurposed hostel advertised as a hotel. We were there with our friends and were given 3 rooms on their side property besides the main entrance. The first sign was a stench of mold and sharing of bathrooms that smell like rotten eggs, the breakfast was not very appealing. The sad part is that it is located in a great location besides the skogafoss waterfall but not worth the money we paid for this stay.

Disappointing. Room is extra tiny. Sketchy cleanliness. Terrible floor. Staff wasn't interested in service, and no upgrade available. It's a small boarding school, with nothing more then small dorm rooms and shared bath and shower. No gym, no spa, it's all a lie. It's a hostel at best. Male signs on the doors and makes me completely uncomfortable to use as a female. Hated every second. Not sure they changed sheets between guests, definitely smelled like they sprayed instead of washed. So bad I was willing to give up what I payed on it if I could have found another hotel.

Don't be fooled by their grand name or exorbitant price tag - this place is a low-grade youth hostel. (Hotel, spa, and gym? Nope). It is a former school in a crumbling, USSR-style concrete building. Contrary to what it said on Expedia, there are only shared bathrooms here. Our room, which was billed as a "family room," didn't even have a sink, though some other rooms had one. The only bathroom on our floor (containing all the showers, sinks and toilets for everyone on our floor) was out of order due to "contamination"?! Maybe you'd like to ask a staff member where the other bathrooms are? No one is at the desk and there's no way to ring for them. When I finally got a shower, the water was slippery (I don't know how else to describe it) and smelled of a mix of sulfur (to be expected in Iceland) and petroleum (not expected). Breakfast was OK, except that the hot water for tea was contaminated with what might have been coffee grounds, maybe. The location is nice, a 1 mile walk to the Skógafoss waterfall. If you like the youth hostel atmosphere and quality for the price of very nice accomodations in New York City, then definitely stay here. Otherwise, go somewhere else.

We have just spent 10 days in Iceland and found hotel establishments of more or less good quality but this is beyond belief!!! As soon as we arrived we realized that it was not a hotel but a youth hostel. No bathroom or toilet in the room, I had never seen that for the price of 387 euros! The shared bathroom for all rooms is deplorable, the toilets and sinks clogged, the lighting did not work, cleanliness was poor. The wrinkled, unironed sheets, the squeaky trundle beds, the floor sticky with dirt, the torn carpet...
Breakfast in a smelly refectory room, poor quality food. I will no longer trust the reviews of travelers, some of whom have rated this establishment 10/10. A rating of 0 would be more appropriate for this hotel which is not one!!!!
The list is not exhaustive as this establishment is deplorable!
Above all, don’t go there!

So this hotel was an old boarding school and it feels like it. Our room was the size of an college dorm with bathrooms and showers outside in the hall. I was desperate when I booked it since there was nothing available near vik. However, to pay almost $400/night and not even have a bathroom is highway robbery! The location was a plus located next to the skogafoss waterfall and the manager was nice. The breakfast was good but again the price of the room does not compare with what you get!

Disappointing. This is definitely not a hotel but an old run down school. Definitely not worth the money. Small rooms where you cannot have an open suitcase at the same time as the door has to be opened. Toilet and shower in the hallway. However, the room was clean. The breakfast was good and the staff friendly.
