In late November my husband and I were one of four couples staying in the hotel for four nights.

So it was very much a great service on arrival, comfortable beds - two singles pushed together, good typical hot and continental breakfast available. Everything you could want and great value considering Icelandic food prices!!! And bless them, the flasks of tea and coffee that they provide to take out on your adventures are a heart warming touch and much appreciated.

We booked here because the South of Iceland has plenty to offer and I had really always wanted to see the Aurora and glaciers. There is very little light pollution here and Northern Lights did not disappoint us! At 10pm we stepped out for a walk down the lane with a travel cuppa tea made in the breakfast room, which is available 24hrs, and to my utter astonishment the clouds parted and the aurora danced green and white for us for 20mins. Amazing!!! Much darker outside of the lit carpark, so take a stroll.

Note: No kettle in rooms but if you ask them for flasks you can make a brew and take it in your room, (yes I'm a brew-aholic) and their flasks are magical-still "boiling" hot eight hours later???

For us this place is a little treasure of a hotel, perhaps not perfect, it echoes in the bedroom section so could be very noisy if fully booked, (I'd definitely bring ear plugs in summer), and needs a little more individual interior detail here and there but considering it is immaculately clean and the two sisters that run it are very warm hosts and go out of their way to help you have a great time we thought it was charming. Please remember this is a fishing heaven hotel by the river and with salmon being out of season in November, no fishermen so nice and quiet.

Also the River Hotel does not serve dinner but is close to the newly opened and unusual restaurant at the golf club called The Strond, really great gastro style food. Including whale steak!! We tried the others in Hella, see what you think but for us poor quality and expensive.

Much like Iceland - I guess the River Hotel is what you make of it, if you've read the reviews and think you can live with the little stuff like no kettle in your room and eating out for dinner then you definitely will not regret this place.

The outdoor hot pot, not jacuzzi, over looking the River is great even in the rain and especially after a day hiking in the snow! Don't miss out on the Myrdalsjokull glacier just after Skogafoss, about an hours drive south, it will take your breath away... my favourite thing!! We drove up in our hire car, slowly, five minute walk and just wow!!

Wouldn't hesitate to book this place again, great location 1.5hrs back from Reykjavik in the dark and snow, same to Gulfoss, Skogarfoss/Vik in the snow.

Thanks River Hotel for a excellent base while achieving a truly unforgettable adventure.

Stayed here on my way to get to the East side of the country. This was our first hotel stay in Iceland, and was surprised by the small size of the bed, but it was comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was good and was available early (not included, had to pay separate).

Rarely do i leave a perfect review however this accomodation was outstanding..rooms were spotless and with adequate space..linen was high quality and beds were firm..ample relaxation areas around the hotel which were cosy and had great ambience...staff were helpful and breakfast was delicious and plentiful..in fact, we were offered bags for our unbeaten breakfast food which then provided lunch. The views from the deck were picture book perfect. There is absolutely nothing to fault with this hotel and the personal and thoughtful service remained me of a favourite B&B..Loved our stay and would definitely return

Overall we had a very bad experience at this hotel. The hotel was relatively clean but we had the impression the hotel was part of an “old boys club” which made the stay and the environment extremely uncomfortable. In addition, we had called the hotel 2 weeks prior to arrival and asked if it was possible to fish near the hotel. The hotel told us we could do so and that the license was $50 dollars. When we arrived, the hotel sent us down a very rough road in a tiny car (they saw our car b/f sending us) to a local river without any fishing license. There were no fish but a local farmer interrogated us. When we returned to the hotel they charged us over USD $225 for 4 hours of rental equipment and no proof of having secured a license. It was the biggest ripoff. The hotel never told us the cost (except for the license). To this day we do not know a license was issued even though we paid for one. The fact that they did not tell us the cost of the equipment, provide us w/ the license and send us down what appeared to be private property was extremely poor. We would not recommend staying at this hotel and if you do use extreme caution!!!

This hotel is in a fabulous location on the banks of the west Rangá river.
We stayed at this hotel whilst on a fishing trip to Iceland.
The hotel is clean and comfortable.
The staff are pretty useless... I reported my tv not working on the day of our arrival and 5 days later when we left, it still wasn’t working.
Every time you went to the bar there was no one to serve you.
We had a fixed menu for lunch and dinner at the hotel... this consisted of lamb, potatoes and salad every day at some stage.... safe to say that the chef was less than imaginative with his menu choices!!
Very disappointed overall with our stay at this hotel, you don’t expect such poor service and food when you are paying premium prices.

Just 2 weeks before we were due to stay at this lovely looking hotel we were issued with a refund for our booking - out of the blue.

We had made and paid for this reservation months ago as part of a tight schedule travelling around Iceland with our two young children. This was to be one of the nicer hotels we would be staying at and we were very much looking forward to it. This left us needing to find alternative accommodation at short notice with few options still available, and prices rising rapidly.

The River Hotel did not even have the courtesy to contact us with any kind of explanation or apology about cancelling our booking - we had to contact them to query why our payment had been refunded. Thankfully we have managed to find alternative accommodation but due to the short notice it is a lower rated hotel but at a higher price. The River Hotel could have left us in a very unpleasant situation in the middle of our holiday.

Amazing place to stay. We arrived in the evening so didn't get to see the surrounding area, we went back the next day just to see it! The view is amazing. The lady who runs the place is also super amazing. Highly recommended.

Relaxing in the hot tub , listening to the sound of the rapids in the nearby river, after a full day of exploring the south coast just can’t be beat. Rooms were clean and comfortable, staff was friendly and helpful, and the setting is stunning. Across the lawn is Iceland’s premier salmon river. This made a wonderful stopping point between Vik and Reykjavik. We would love to go back and try the fishing.

What a lovely hotel. 5 mins drive out of town on the river. Fishermen and birds. Hot tub overlooking the river. Lovely rooms. All with private bathrooms ( which is not always standard in Iceland). Lots of terraces and lounges overlooking the river. Bar. Good breakfast in lovely room. Staff were very very helpful. Great.
