Hotel Ranga stands out for its exceptional service, with guests frequently lauding the staff's attentiveness and promptness in fulfilling requests. The hotel's cleanliness is a point of pride, ensuring spotless rooms and well-maintained facilities. Its amenities, including aurora wake-up calls and outdoor hot tubs, receive high marks from travelers, as does the dining experience and the observatory for stargazing. While the rooms' unique themes and views are appreciated, some guests feel they could benefit from modernization. The rustic charm of the hotel contributes to a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The location is celebrated for northern lights viewing and proximity to local attractions, though opinions on value for money vary, with some finding the experience doesn't fully justify the cost.

The hotel is about an hours walk from downtown Hella, where there is an excellent volcano museum and not much else of tourist interest. When my wife and I arrived, we asked at reception, if we could get a taxi to the museum. One of the hotel staff kindly drove us there in her own car without charge and collected us as well. The hotel is fairly smart and up market lined inside with a lot of natural wood. Our bedroom was large and comfortable with an outside hot tub (which we did not use as it was rather cold outside). We were offered a free welcome drink at the bar. The ambiance, service and food at the restaurant were five star, with prices to match. A meal costs at least the equivalent of £50. The hotel organises a 'Northern light watch'. In the middle of the night, if Northern lights appear, guests are woken by a loud bell and invited to get dressed and rush outside to glimpse the lights. We did this, but missed them: the Northern Lights, have a reputation for being unreliable. Overall, it was one of the best and friendliest hotels that we have been to. Highly recommended!

We stayed four nights at Hotel Ranga and had a spectacular viewing of the northern lights, lasting on and off for over three hours with green, pink and purple colors dancing quite clearly to the naked eye. Our photos are quite amazing! The staff at Hotel Ranga are wonderfully helpful and attentive and the restaurant is truly great. Honestly the food is fantastic: delicious Icelandic specialties and many options. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, "white-glove" clean with heated floor in the bathroom and radiators that respond very quickly to adjustments. This is a big hotel with many areas to enjoy, though every space feels convenient and welcoming. This is truly a gem of a hotel and we had a perfect experience here. I can't say enough good things about Hotel Ranga.

Thank you so much to all the staff at Hotel Ranga! We visited Feb 2020 for a friends wedding and were totally impressed from start to finish. We arrived on Saturday morning and, knowing that we would be arriving in time for the wedding, staff made sure our room was ready early so we could check in when we arrived. Nothing was too much trouble for our entire trip. Hot tubs are amazing, rooms lovely and location superb. Breakfast at Ranga is excellent with so much variety! Staff had contacted us before we arrived to ask if we needed any additional activities organising, so they also booked a snowmobiling tour for us which was amazing! Can not fault this place at all. Thank you!!

Location, service, food (Omg the food!), rooms with whirlpool baths ... just everything about Ranga oozed customer focussed satisfaction. Nothing was too much trouble. Even providing amazing lunchboxes if you're out for the day and unsure when you might eat. Took advantage of the laundry service which was a little pricey but something many others do not provide and was a very welcome addition after being on the road for a week. Talking to locals they too seem to hold it in high esteem which is always a great advertisement. I'd loved to have spent all my time in Iceland here if it were possible but will certainly return if I find myself in Iceland again.

Overall we had an ok stay here. As a member of the Small Leading Hotels I had expected a more elevated experience but it looked like the hotel was last renovated 30 years ago. Actually, to me, the decor is really odd and off putting. They supposedly have “theme” rooms but as far as I could tell, that just meant there were painted murals of Vikings, etc. Did not add to the ambiance. The couch in the room looked very old; the bathrooms could use a serious remodeling. In addition, the drains in all the bathrooms (our group altogether had three rooms) were incredibly slow. There was no shower curtain or glass for the large soaking tub in the room, so we stood in the shower and tried very hard not to spray everything in the bathroom. Dinner and breakfast were fine - perhaps amongst the best that we had experienced in Iceland. However, I would probably look to stay elsewhere next time. The location was convenient for exploring the South Coast, so I hope they renovate the property soon to be worthy of a “Small Leading Hotel”.

We made a last minute decision to take a short weekend break, away from our wonderful offspring. Hótel Rangá is a pleasure to visit, luckily we arrived in beautiful weather and were able to take in the beauty of the hotel's location on the banks of River Rangá. We stayed in the Antarctic suite - the design, furnishings and the splendid views made our stay there really wonderful. We didn't want to leave our room, except we had ordered a three course chef's recommendation dinner. The food was exceptional - I've probably never tasted more tender lamb. The breakfast buffet the morning after was also the best I've seen in an Icelandic hotel. The morning we left we took a stroll down by the beautiful river. Overall an exceptional experience.

I can thoroughly recommend Hotel Ranga, our stay was perfect in every way! Amazing food and great service every night both in the bar and the restaurant. The whole place has such a lovely, cosy log cabin feel to it. We loved sitting in the thermal hot tubs watching the snow come down. Sadly it was too cloudy for us to spot the northern lights whilst we were there but it was a wonderful experience all the same. I do recommend hiring a car though for your stay as the location is quite remote and you would be a bit stuck without one. Saying that if you do have a car it is a very easy drive from Ranga to the various points of the Golden Circle as well as the black beaches and waterfalls of the south.

We chose Hotel Ranga as a convenient spot outside of Reykjavik from which to enjoy daily excursions and to hunt for Northern Lights. The hotel did turn out to be very well located. We were able to see everything we wanted in a drive of two hours or less. The staff at the hotel was fantastic in assisting with making our plans for each day, recommending activities, helping with driving directions, etc. Our room was comfortable and warm, no matter the storm outside. On one particularly snowy morning, I was thrilled to see a hotel employee outside cleaning the snow from all of the cars in the parking lot so that the guests could easily begin their day's journey. We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Ranga. We will definitely visit Iceland again and will definitely return to Hotel Ranga.

My wife and I had a wonderful time using Hotel Ranga as a base for exploring the south end of Iceland. The food in the restaurant was good, the beds were comfy, and the hot tubs outside were fantastic. I was greatly appreciative of the foam pillows they provided us, which ensured I didn't get any neck pain.

The observatory was open for one of the nights we stayed, and we both very much enjoyed seeing the stars, Saturn, and Jupiter with the fancy telescopes. The only way it could have been better was if the moon was new instead of full.

We reserved a package deal as a part of a three night stay that included dinners and a Deluxe room. This was a great deal on a great location, and we ensured that we made it back each night to enjoy the dinners. The hot tubs outside were the absolute perfect temprature for gazing out into the near perfect darkness around the hotel with a chill in the air.

My partner and I have just returned from a 4 night stay at Hotel Ranga. Overall we had an excellent stay. The hotel itself was cozy, clean and well presented. The hot tubs were a lovely touch and after long days exploring we looked forward to going back to the hotel. On our last night we were finally able to see the Northern Lights which was an unforgettable experience. We were so thrilled after 3 nights with no display. I think it is important to remember that despite visiting one of the best hotels for the Northen lights, this is never guaranteed. We did meet at lot of guests who hasn’t seen them. The hotels wake up service was excellent and woke us up at 12am and again at 3am to inform us. The hot chocolate and snow suits were a lovely touch. We only had a few suggestions for improvement and these were really minimal. The room was cozy and the hand painted picture on the wall a nice addition, however we really needed a shower screen and a double duvet (which we were told the hotel does not provide). Instead our king size room was two single beds pushed together and two single duvets. Additionally, the restaurant menu is very narrow. After driving around the golden circle, going snowmobiling or whale watching, the last thing we wanted to do was to dress up and have a fancy meal. The restaurant was always full and I heard great things about the food. But a more casual option would have been greatly appreciated, especially as options nearby are so limited. The hotel does offer a room service menu which is more casual but it would be nice to be given the option to eat this somewhere other than your room, such as a bar area or upstairs. Breakfast was great and breakfast service warm and friendly.
Overall we had a brilliant stay and would recommend Hotel Ranga to friends and family. The hotel was warm and relaxing, exactly what we needed after long days outdoors. My only recommendation would be to manage expectations regarding northern lights, as the weather is very unpredictable and we saw a lot of disappointed pointed guests leaving, and to understand that the hotel is very remote with few evening dining options. If we return to Iceland in the future we will certainly stay here again and enjoyed everything that the hotel had to offer. Thank you to the staff who made our stay so enjoyable.

We were there in the summer so, no Northern Lights at that time. We do know they can arrange Northern Light tours in the area. The service at Hotel Ranga is outstanding - they will help you make all tour arrangements.

We were self-drive so not sure but it is 2 hours from airport. They always reply to messages so worth asking.
