#3 of 13 B&Bs / Inns in Kailua-Kona

We are a beautifully maintained and landscaped property with eleven bright, well-appointed, and clean guestrooms. We are just steps from Kahalu'u Bay which offers excellent snorkeling and surfing. We are located one mile North of Keauhou Shopping Center with grocery and restaurants and four miles South of Kona Town.

The "Main House" has the Ali'i Luxury Suite on the top floor and four private guestrooms on the second floor. Each guestroom has one king bed, ensuite bathroom, and kitchenette with microwave and fridge. Bamboo and Pineapple have screened lanais with garden views; Orchid and Seaside have outdoor lanais with tropical views. The Main House also has a sitting area, guest laundry, and beach equipment to borrow.

The "Guest House" has six private, unique guestrooms, each with one queen bed - all have ensuite bathrooms except Surfer Room, and all have kitchenettes except Maile Room which has a full kitchen including stovetop and oven. Aloha has an outdoor lanai with an ocean view. Honu is a cute ground-level room with lots of screened windows. Maile has an ocean view from both the lanai and living/dining areas. Oceanview has an ocean view from the first floor lanai and from the second floor bedroom. Paradise is surrounded with screened windows with garden views. And Surfer is a petite ground-level room with a private bathroom just a few steps outside in a separate building.

In addition to the kitchenettes, we have a community outdoor kitchen with a gas stove, gas grill, and dining area - a great place to "talk story" after a day of island adventures.

Stayed in the Maile room. Booked this room based on the pictures on the website. Gave the impression we would have lovely views of tropical foliage, with a glimpse of the ocean. This was the reality on our balcony. This house had people coming and going all hours. Car doors slamming, dogs barking, engines revving, family fighting loudly, chain saw one morning… what topped it all was a very loud ugly fight with the F bomb being thrown around… not relaxing or peaceful. Also, there is a parking area directly in front of our room. We opted to look for something else. Was able to relocate for 4 nights of our 8 night stay. If your ok with this view, great! But, I thought it should be shared so you know when you book!

We are very sorry to hear that the view and your stay did not meet your expectations. We wish we had been made aware of your concerns as we may have been able to address some of the issues; we try to make it clear that we are available day and night by call or text during times we are not physically at the property. While many people find Big Island Retreat to be a quiet and pleasant place to be, we are sorry that your stay was disrupted by noise from the surf shops below us and the neighborhood around us as well as our small parking areas. We do hope you still enjoyed your time in Hawaii overall.

Our family loved our stay at the Big Island Retreat. The location is under newer management - Karen and Eddie are super fantastic and very accommodating. We stayed in the Pineapple Room and loved the open air windows, outdoor kitchen, view of the ocean and proximity to a beach. Albeit the beach was not our favorite in the area but we used the hotel location as our central location for Two Step Beach, Magic Sands Beach, Kona downtown shopping, sunset watching, Manta Ray swimming, and grocery food shopping. All within 5-10 minutes walking or driving. It was really nice to have easy access laundry facilities and beach toys available to borrow. Our room was spotless, very comfortable and we loved the overall atmosphere of the building. The biggest downfall of the hotel is that parking is a bit tight so if you are bringing in a big rental car be prepared for tough maneuvering - but that is really a 1st world problem.

The property is a "main house" and "guest house" with a variety of rooms. I stayed in the Paradise room, which does not have an ocean view, but is private with screening plants. At night and morning, you hear coqui frogs and birdsong. The numerous windows are screened and open, providing a lovely breeze. It's located just up the hill from Kahaluu, which has great snorkeling. It's a quick bike ride down to Magic Sands. There is a microwave/toaster/fridge in room, and a full kitchen in the covered outdoor BBQ area.

My husband and I spent a week at Big Island! Great location to many beaches. Jenny and Britanny were so helpful. The resort has equipment u can borrow- lawn chairs, coolers, surf boards, snorkel gear etc... Our room had a small fridge and microwave so we did all over our cooking in the community kitchen. Guests leave surplus foods, tinfoils, spices so tigers can share.. keeps cost lower if you do an inventory before going shopping . There is a bbq and large 3 stove .. plates and cutlery are available as well We would definitely stay there again!! Thanks Jenny and Brittany!! You were great!

if you are 20 and don't care if the bed has big valleys and creeks each time you move at night, you are fine. But for a person over 40 the bed we had in the Honu suite was horrifying. the place is cute and close to a great beach however. The pounding (construction) of the neighbors with the new building we left after 1 day having paid for 4. the other problem is that you have to use the one sink for both washing hands/Bathroom AND for dishes. Very unsanitary (I am a nurse...) But if you want cheap and don't care about bed (or if they replace it) it's a great location. well decorated.
