We booked a room here because it sounded nice and it was close to the Dunes. What a mistake and a waste of $200! Our “Queen suite” was a dingy motel room with dirty and broken furniture. Some lightbulbs were out, the smoke detector was inoperable, there was mold in the shower, curtains were ripped, porch was very dirty, room was dusty. I could go on, but you get the idea. Also, no restaurant that is theirs, just a walk up burger place that closed at 3:45. We stayed because we did not see any bed bugs, and were tired and didn’t’t want to go looking for anything else. Buyer beware…this place should be shut down!
This is a great place to stay while visiting Great Sand Dunes NP. Every room has a great view of the dunes and mountains from the patios. We only stayed one night but would definitely stay there again.
The Great Sand Dunes Lodge is overpriced. First the positive. The view from every room is stunning. The lodge is only about two miles from the dunes. A sliding door (with a screen that needs to be replaced) in the room and a window that opens in the bathroom, allow for fresh air. No disgusting carpet-the floors are covered with a Pergo-Like flooring. Outside areas were clean. The beds were not uncomfortable. Cell reception for phone calls, no problem. Now for the negatives. Internet access is slower than molasses. Do not plan on working remotely, or watching anything on your computer or try to plan for your trip. As with many places, patrons share access to a communal internet line, and the office has a private, designated (fast) line. Don't bother to ask about it, staff will tell you the internet is fine. The pillows, blankets, bedspreads and pillow shams were simply disgusting and need to be replaced. Maybe the sheets were clean? Maybe not. Had the bedding been nicer, the feeling of "clean" might have been more immediate. They use a perfumed cleaning agent with an overpowering scent and no matter how long the windows were open, we couldn't get rid of it. The room phones don't work. There's no one is in the office after 8:00 p.m. so we're not sure of the procedure in case of emergency. The toilet seat is chipped and needs to be replaced. A few hooks to hold used towels would be nice. Replacing the missing board in the "closet" area would provide someplace to put baggage. The hair dryer is meant to be attached to a wall instead of being stored in a random drawer in the room. Some lightbulbs were out. The t.v. remote batteries were dead. Breakfast was the typical American diet. Don't expect organic. We didn't use the A.C. or the heat so no comment on those.…
I stayed here one night with my dog. The room was super clean. The only gripe I have about the room is I did not have a screen on my sliding door like other units do and the AC can’t be turned on all the time so it got quite warm in my room during the night when the AC turned off. The breakfast area was very well stocked and every one of the employees I encountered was very nice. The views of the sand dunes are excellent. It was a nice quiet place to stay.
The rooms are fine, though a bit pricy for the quality. You are paying for the location - the view at night and proximity to get to the park earlier before the intense heat sets in. We rented a sandboard and sand sled from them too, which I heard was better quality than what you get at Oasis. We used the BBQ at night while watching the sunset.
