Our experience at The Plaza during Christmas week (December 23-27) was mixed. While it’s always exciting to experience an iconic hotel, the overall experience fell short of expectations.
We initially booked the Pulitzer Suite, but received an email offering a potential upgrade to the Vanderbilt or Penthouse Suites. Upon check-in, we discovered our upgrade request wasn’t granted, which was fine. However, the Penthouse Suite was available for two of the four nights, albeit at $1,300 more per night instead of the $500 quoted in the email. Ultimately, we stayed in the Pulitzer Suite for two nights and the Penthouse Suite for the last two.
Service was good, especially for the holiday. We’re fairly low-maintenance guests and only ordered room service, which was decent and predictably priced for this level of hotel.
The hotel entrance is on the side of the building, which often led to congestion as non-guests crowded the doors trying to get in. The lack of l signage meant the doormen had to play answer the same questions repeatedly, acting more as bouncers for a nightclub than doormen (through no fault of their own- they were very welcoming to actual guests). Meanwhile, the residence entrance remained clear, likely thanks to better signage.
If you’re expecting the opulence seen in a 30-year-old movie, please know the hotel lobby isn’t the same lobby seen in the movie. That lobby is reserved for residents, and hotel guests can’t access it. The hotel lobby is small in comparison to what you may expect. It is not located at the side entrance. The actual front desk feels like an afterthought, tucked into a hallway past the Pal Court restaurant, past the concierge, tucked between the Champagne Bar/restaurant, elevators, and a jewelry store. There is a seating area directly above the front desk area overlooking the Champagne Bar, but the layout is just a little odd.
The halls and rooms have been modernized for a more generic aesthetic. They were nice, but boring. There are faux fireplaces, which consist of a mantle and a metal screen with electrical wall outlets behind it. In the Penthouse Suite, the closet drawers were misaligned, the heated bathroom floor controls didn’t work, and the hairdryer was a Sunbeam brand. These details are minor, but at this price point, such oversights are noticeable.
That said, staying at The Plaza for Christmas fulfilled a 30 year dream, and for that, I’m grateful. But would I stay here again? Probably not. The hotel feels l corporatized and lacks the grandeur one might hope for.

My daughter and I had afternoon tea at the hotel. We were expecting the environment to be lovely and the tea service to be impeccable. Even though we had high expectations, the wait staff truly made the experience one to remember. Everyone was attentive and kind and went out of their way to make sure that my daughter had a lovely birthday tea. Our primary server, Shalim Khan , checked on us frequently and made sure that we had everything we needed or wanted. He even provided postcards and a special treat for my daughter. The food was delicious, and the tea was very high-quality, but as I told my daughter, You are paying for the total experience, the tea more than delivered!

We had a wonderful time at breakfast with Mr Haque. His service was exceptional. We love people who take their job seriously and provide extraordinary service. We can’t wait to return. Thanks me Haque and thank you the plaza hotel. I also want to add that the orange juice they served at breakfast was very good. It was freshly squeezed and they it seems they took care to pick the right oranges before squeezing.

This is, to date, the worst experience at a hotel we've ever had. I so regret booking. Please, if you are reading this, RUN. Do not book here. Book at The Carlyle, book at The Pierre. I wish I could go back in time and listen to the negative reviews but if I can't save myself at least I can stop another poor soul from wasting thousands on this shambles of a property.
Lets start out by saying, this is not "The Plaza." That hotel is dead, it's gone. Eloise? Home Alone, The Way We Were? No, you will not be reminded of those iconic stories here.
Instead, at this Plaza, the ghost of hotels past, you will be bombarded with a million sweaty, loud, tourists, all wearing sweats, pajamas or flip flops and carrying loads of luggage. Maybe a single bellman will be carelessly doing his job to the absolute bare minimum, causing you to wait a record 40 minutes to get help w/ your luggage and get the car valet. Polished service is something you will *not* find at this hotel.
Inside, is a dingy, dark and shabby ghost of a once grand hotel. Hallways leading to your room are so dark and dingy you'll be reminded of a horror film. Stains on the carpets, flickering lights, doors that don't fit their frames and don't close properly. My husband mentioned that after several minutes of being in our room he felt the need to wash his hands. It's just that kind of dingy.
And in your room (we had a "Penthouse suite" which is its own morbid joke) you will find stains, dirty carpets, squeaky furniture (including the bed which seemed ancient) and scrapped up floors. Cabinets that are tilted and dented and mirrors that are cracked and dirty. The butler service that comes with the room is a joke. A man shows up randomly and asks if he can get you anything, but he's a human mini bar, only really able to delivery snacks or drinks and wanting a tip at every interaction. The only real reason they include this service is an excuse to squeeze more money out of you.
Our room was $2900/night. People, believe me when I tell you, it wasn't worth $600/night. 15 minutes after checking in, exhausted from the journey to NYC I grabbed a car to The Carlyle. I was so jaded at this point that I had them show me their rooms before booking anything, which they kindly did. For $1600/night I got a beautiful room, with a wonderful view and, most importantly, impeccable service.
I booked The Carlyle because I know I couldn't stay more than a night at The Plaza and I don't regret it. My only regret is I, like so many others, bought into the history and the name and got suckered into spending $2900 on what is realistically a holiday inn wrapped in historic architecture.

I booked a four night stay in an Edwardian suite to spend thanksgiving in the city. The check in was very smooth and the property appears well kept with nice fragrance pumped right through the HVAC system. The entire place smelled nice as a result.
I am a die hard fan of Fairmont hotels and have tried many of their properties over the years. Having stayed at their flagship hotel the Savoy in London and their competitor the Ritz, it pains me to say that the service here fell quite short of my expectations of a flagship property.
The staff working there seem just “tired” and they do not seem to want to have any sort of genuine connection with the guests. They are just all about business there. This is very different from places like the ritz there they take the time to get to know you and engage in meaningful ways to make the stay a memorable one.
Our suite includes some sort of a white glove butler service but I’ve not even see the butler once during my stay. On the day after thanksgiving, somehow our room was not serviced all day. I even called in around 3 pm to request a house keeping service and it did not happen even then. I had to go to the front desk to request it to finally have the room cleaned.
I think this hotel is great and has a lot of potential, but the staff training isn’t there yet. It’s also quite unique in the sense that it’s in a historic building in the sea of ultra modern high rises. However, the hotel seems to only occupy the south wing and is quite small despite looking imposing from the outside. As a result most of the rooms don’t have much of a view to speak of. If you are looking for rooms with views, you will have to pay quite a bit more for partial park views.
All in all it was a rather uneventful and also unremarkable stay. I am Diamond with Accor and used four suite night upgrades for this stay, but they were not honored at check out. I had to call in and be out on hold for quite a while to get it sorted. The front desk person wasn’t even apologetic for this clerical error.
I really want to like this hotel and would love more opportunities to experience its full glory. Perhaps the weekend was just too busy. Although For the same price I’d recommend going with four season or mandarin oriental both of which have much better views and modern amenities.

I have always wanted to stay at the Plaza in NYC. We live in upstate NY and visit NYC quite often & my daughters always loved Eloise. However, our stay at The Plaza was far from the luxury experience we expected. We booked one of the largest suites, (Edwardian suite) complete with "white glove butler service," but the service was laughably poor. No one offered to assist us with anything.
Upon arrival, we waited nearly 30 minutes in the freezing cold for someone to valet our car and retrieve our luggage, despite informing the hotel in advance of our arrival time. To make matters worse, our room wasn't even ready. The lack of preparation and attention to detail was shocking for a hotel of this reputation.
The poor service extended to dining as well. We had a $400 breakfast at The Palm Court, and not only did they forget items we ordered, but the food we were served was both laughable in portion size and disappointing in quality. To make matters worse, the service was painfully slow—diners at nearby tables could be heard repeatedly trying to track someone down for basic needs. The experience was so absurd that we almost burst out laughing at the audacity of calling this a luxury dining experience.
The service throughout our stay was so slow and inadequate that when we finally left the hotel to have breakfast at a modest diner on our last day, we all agreed it was the best service we'd experienced since arriving.
The Plaza should be embarrassed by the level of service they provide. For the premium price we paid, we expected world-class hospitality, but instead, we were met with frustration at every turn.
I will add the one positive was the room. It was a beautifully decorated suite and large in size. It even had a christmas tree which was a nice touch.

I have always wanted to stay at The Plaza. On June 29th my husband and I finally had an opportunity to do so. When we arrived at 4pm we were told our room was not ready, we booked the Round Tower room. I booked thru my amex card, which allows us a late checkout. The occupants before us also booked with their amex card allowing a late check out. Not a problem, we were offered a comfort room and we walked around town for about an hour and a half. When we returned to the hotel at 5:30 our room was still not ready. That's when we had an issue. The gentleman at the front desk Russell was very helpful and offered to get a manager. The manager Jessica was very short and rude with us. She said she could not offer us anything (we didn't ask for anything) as we had prepaid for the room and amex gives credits to use at their fine hotels. Jessica also stated that she a "manager" had no control over housekeeping. We went to the bar and Russell came over to try to rectify the situation. He offered a hotel credit and a spa credit, we declined. He was very sincere in his effort to help. In the end we went to dinner and returned after 7pm and our room was ready with a bottle of champagne and breakfast was comped.

We are New Yorkers and wanted to take some friends from out of town to the Champange bar for drinks because it was a covenant location to Bergdofs and some shopping we were doing. . Was turned down at the door - the doorman only letting in residents and those visiting residents in. Apparently this is the first year they are doing this. I later discovered that The Four Seasons has since reopened ( the one on 57th Street) a short walk, and welcomes people for dining and drinks, so we went there instead, a loss the Plaza.
I think your doormen are going overboard on blocking people who genuinely want to come to the hotel to spend money . Though I can understand the need to control some of the crowds, there needs to be some kind fo balance, and I think your staff can't tell the difference between genuine dining / drinks people and those that just want to come and take pictures.
I was reminded of what The Plaza has become, not really a true luxury hotel anymore, a lot of hype…let's be honest, a glorified Fairmont now?

Dear kaily, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we’re sorry to hear about your experience. Myself and my partner attended without a booking in order to enjoy a birthday cocktail at the famous Plaza Hotel which was a bucket list thing for me to do.
The south-American lady on the welcome podium at the Palm Tree lounge was very pleasant and professional and seated us. Another waitress took our cocktail order a short time later who was also professional.
The cocktails are approx $30 each, and when I’m paying £10-15 GBP for a cocktail back home in the local corner house, this really isn’t all *that* extortionate for the location, surroundings and quality.
I had a classic espresso martini and my partner had a French martini (I think?!) Both were great!
The gratuity is added to the bill and you get a nice postcard with pre-paid postage to send to someone back home too, or to keep for yourself like we did!

We have stayed in wonderful hotels all over the world such as the Drake in Chicago and the Fairmont in San Francisco . So when I booked this hotel for a special birthday celebration for my partner I had great expectations. Upon arrival the interior of the hotel is lovely, the entrance with the beautiful flower arrangement is what one would expect, plus the adjoining dining/bar area is beautiful. However, what was disappointing was the carpet in our room which had certainly seen better days and one day we were in the room and could hear a dog crying and barking in the room next door.
I was not aware that dogs were allowed in the hotel otherwise we would certainly not have stayed there. Also in the eating areas of the hotel dogs were also allowed. We did have concern for the dog which was barking and crying in the next room as it was probably distressed. We reported this to management and were told that guests were advised that they should not leave pets unattended in the room, but quickly followed that by saying that our complaint was not the only one and these particular guests were leaving that day. This was totally missing the point I felt, as we were only there for 4 nights and when staying at hotel for a short period of time, it is not unreasonable to expect our stay not to be marred by this kind of situation. In our opinion the matter was not really addressed.
In our opinion the hotel is very expensive to eat and drink, but we found a very good Irish pub in 7th Avenue and a very good restaurant in 6th avenue. We found that the majority of the staff were very aloof and not what one would call approachable.
We made the mistake of trying to go through an entrance which said ‘residents only’ until we were shouted at by a doorman right on the busy pavement across the road from Central Park. He told us ‘your entrance is around the side’. Even though my partner showed him our room key there was no explanation and he made us feel extremely embarrassed in front of a crowd of people in a busy street.
We did not travel all this way to be so disappointed. We will never stay here again as we have learned a few lessons. As I say extremely disappointed after a very expensive stay.

The lobby is open but it’s small and only has a bar (with good food as it happens) Most of the Plaza was converted to residences some years ago. There are shops around the side, that’s the best entrance. So there’s not much to see to be honest 😂 the best picture is outside on the steps and the doormen are all legends and will gladly help you !!
