Detailed Reviews
Staying at Heidi's made our time in New York even more unforgettable. This is not only because we had spacious and cozy rooms or because the house is big and charming, located in a nice and quiet street and close to the subway. This is also because at Heidi's we felt at home. The big kitchen with its big table is a meeting point where Heidi and the various guests unavoidably meet, at breakfast or in the evening, and have an occasion to chat and exchange. Coffee, fresh fruits, jam and muffins are always available for guests and one can use the kitchen to cook or eat. Heidi is always ready to help with good advices. It is also very pleasant to talk with her of disparate topics and she's particularly passionate for Harlem and New York. We will definitely keep a good memory of Heidi and her house.

We had a wonderful stay at Easyliving again. We enjoyed the spacious room, a comfortable bed, and very much socialising as well as cook in the cosy kitchen downstairs. Heidi sharing her knowledge and beeing a very welcoming hostess made our stay here the best we could get! As last time, over 10 years ago we learned from listening to and talking with Heidi, both me and my teenaged travel company. Harlem is also still a calm and quiet area to return to in the evening after a bustling day downtown. If you get the express lines on the Subway you are actually just 15 minutes away from midtown. But you really may not want to leave Harlem as the area has a lot to offer, restaurants, bars, shopping and basketball parks where even tourist kids can join and play.

Just great! Beautiful house with 3 floors
We had the 3rd, with 3 rooms: Cadet Roussel was happy, with a family of 5, 3 children...All in varnished wood, about 100 years old, like brand new!
Tom is gone around may 21.He loved seeing all those people going by, says Heidi, but so does she! She became a friend even before we got there, and ever more since then. We miss her so!
And the metro is near, and fast😊👍

Beautifully restored, comfortable rooms in a relaxed, friendly , homelike atmosphere. Convenient to subways and not as hectic as staying further downtown. This is NY as people really live it. A much better experience than a chain hotel. Meet other travelers around the big kitchen table while also having your privacy in spacious, well appointed rooms. Staying here was a wonderful experience.

Lovely B&B in New York. The rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated with a personal touch. The host, Heidi is lovely, helpful and very knowledgeable. Living in Harlem also gives you the chance to see a different and less touristic part of New York, while still being not far from the center via metro. We hope to be back some day!

If you are looking for a nice trip to New York there are thousands of brochures which will offer you a very similar experience and it will come at a price. To me all the hotels look very similar and if I dare say it, they look a little bland.
But if you want a holiday with a difference you should check out EasyLiving Harlem.
Apparently this is the 2nd best B&B in New York. If this is second then the B&B which is first must be unbelievable.
We read the reports on TA before we booked and it ticked all our boxes.
But I have to say that when we arrived we realised it ticked all our boxes and a whole lot more.
You aren't going to find any better hosts than Heidi and Thomas in the whole of NYC.
And the people of Harlem are brilliant. Friendly, polite and courteous only scratches the surface.
Heidi and Thomas helped plan our daily excursions, ferried us to the airport, took us to the local Jazz club but more than that they were great people to spend time with. When we walked in for the first time Heidi provided snacks and Thomas opened the beer before we could take our coats off.
Their house has been lovingly restored and has all the features of a traditional brownstone.
For us thats far more appealing than a 40 storey hotel in Times Sq!!
We spent time sat around the dining table with Heidi and Thomas and their friends discussing all subjects under the sun. Great times. It was a real shame that we were only their for a long weekend. They have an in-house poet in Jodie and a friend, Felton, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Harlem music scene.
New York is a great city and we will return.
If you are thinking of visiting then have a look at this place.
You could find something that looks nice in a brochure but why not try somewhere different and interesting.
Like us, you won't be sorry.
As they say in the brochures - book now to avoid disappointment.

I've never stayed in this part of town before, but had been to New York a few times. Mostly I'd stayed in lower east side and/or Greenwich village area (now too touristy). This B&B in a most lovely quiet part of Harlem couldn't have been better, and I'm now decided this area is much more interesting and the B& B too good to risk going anywhere else again (well as long as I can get in next time of course!)
Why so good then? Firstly the owners were great hosts in every way, helping me when I required it, and letting me feel in my own space too. They live in a beautifully restored and character-filled 'Brownstone' in a great tree lined street and guests have use of a wonderful kitchen and other amenities like a garden courtyard for breakfast. (You can also have space in a large fridge for your own stuff and cook on the designer oven etc – for guests only – and there's fresh fruit and muffins everyday provided for breakfast. Plus coffee/good teas…)
The rooms are beautifully decorated, good beds with every comfort provided. All this and it's close to transport to go wherever you want in New York with 2 subway lines nearby (a short walk).
I will come back not only though because of the house and location. For me, its the hosts who were truly incredible. I feel I was privileged to meet them. They were both warm and welcoming, helpful in every way – especially reassuring when you are a woman travelling alone. They also know the local area and interesting locals very well, know most of the places to eat nearby etc, and are always ready if need be with great tips. My last night for example was spent at a cosy nightclub/live music venue with a friendly Senegalese inspired cuisine restaurant next door - they suggested I go. It was just around the corner, and that night there was amazing live music to be heard from upcoming artists. Clientele there were friendly also and all up a great way to end a research trip.
Anyhow how better to get a real sense of Harlem than be surrounded by friendly people in beautiful environment who just welcomed you into their world if you needed it, or let you do your own thing most of the time, but with a home away from home aspect!

We are a couple from the Netherlands and wanted to visit NY somewhat different then booking the standard hotel in lower Manhattan. So we decided to step outside of our "comfort zone" and book an B&B. Due to the reviews on Tripadvisor we opted for Easyliving-Harlem. I must say, I have only one regret... and that is the fact that I did not book my stay during my previous visits also at this wonderful B&B.
When arriving at the B&B we first had the feeling of "what did we do?". Is it even safe here? As a lot of "non-locals" we also were influenced by the movies and TV-shows.. But after a very warm welcome of Heidi and Tom, we knew that it was the BEST choice we could have made! In less then one day, Easyliving-Harlem became our second home abroad and it was a haven of rest and peace after exploring hectic New York all day long. And regarding feeling safe: we never (ever) had once an uncomfortable, or unsafe, feeling during our stay. Even walking the streets late in the evening. Harlem is THE best part of town to stay!
Heidi and Tom do more than their best to give you the best experience ever! If you want advice, they are more then willing to help you. There are also travel guides to be used in different languages. Heidi speaks English, German and French fluently. We enjoyed our talks, on all kind of topics, with Heidi and Tom very much. It must be said that Heidi and Tom are real ambassadors of Harlem.
The room and bathroom were spacious, very clean and tidy. Airco and blower are available. And last but not least, the bed was big! Important if one of the travelers is 2meters tall ;-)
An example of the service level: We had a late flight back home, and we could keep the key from the house until our departure to the airport, so we could leave our luggage, use the kitchen, restroom and relax in the garden after our last day downtown.
While writing this review I'm almost feeling homesick and we do hope that we are able to visit Easyliving-Harlem once again in time.

From our first email correspondence with Heidi and Tom right up to our goodbye's this morning, this B&b lives up to everything I read from other Trip Advisor reviews, and more. You're made to feel so welcome, and they're so helpful, you can't help but fall in love with the place and the neighbourhood. Don't let misplaced preconceived thoughts of others put you off Harlem. Our seven night stay (May 5th - 12th) was the best city experience I've ever had; safe, interesting, exciting, and never dull, underpinned by its history, restaurants, bars, music and most important the real community that exists in this vibrant neighbourhood. Even visiting the church services on our last Sunday morning turned into an unforgetable experience, and that's from and athiest!
Heidi and Tom couldn't do enough for you, be it advice, ideas on what to see and do, and most of all being genuine hosts who care about their guests. I can't recommend them enough other than to say believe the reviews; they're genuine and based on sound evidence.
We had the en-suite room, and the pictures on this site, however good, don't decieve; it's even bigger than they suggest. The bed must be a triple king size or made for basketball players; I've never slept in one as big! Sharing the kitchen becomes a meeting place to chat with other guests and Heidi and Tom, and the garden area out back is perfect for resting and reading at the end of a busy sight seeing day. (don't let the door lock behind you though if you go out like I did, it could be embarassing waiting to get back in).
Location wise the reviews say it again. Easy access to 2/3 bus services, subways less than 5 minutes walk away. Restaurants, shops, music venues, parks, all situated close the house. The neighbourhood is safe, but more important it is welcoming and vibrant. Try the "Appolo" theatre on 125th St on a Wednesday night; that experience alone sums up this district. A mixture of tourists and local people go religiously to enjoy the "amature night" and it's an event you won't forget. It's cheaper than Broadway and more fun if you like genuine entertainment and that's just the audience.
Make sure you buy a Metro Card (30$ for a week). It's the best deal in New York and helps get you downtown to the usual tourist sites in less than 15 minutes. Coming back to Harlem on an evening was like "coming home" after the rush of the City. Don't be put off by its out of town address. Just travelling in and out of town is an experinece alone.
The best of the area is the people and the genuine 'vibe' you get that just grows and grows on you, which is a reflection of the welcome Heidi and Tom gave to us. It has so much variety at a different pace and as such provides an excellent contrast to the usual New York sights we wanted to see.
This was our treat to ourselves for our 30th wedding anniversary, and it was worth every penny. It was more than value for money; it was an unforgetable experience full of memories we'll never forget. Thanks Heidi and Tom; thanks Harlem, you were the icing on the cake that was New York.

We stayed at Easy Living Harlem for a week in January this year with family- all adult-
and recommend it unreservedly as the place to make a holiday in New York
perfection itself. The 19th Century house is beautifully and
sympathetically restored and furnished, with the addition of contemporary,
tasteful bathrooms and kitchen, but it's Heidi and Tom who make it home -
it was their home and ours for the duration of our stay - and, because they
are so generous, warm, good-humoured and genuine, and New Yorkers who know
and love the city, in no time we felt like locals too. The kitchen was
ours if we wanted an evening in, but there's so much to do in Harlem itself
and access from the house to anywhere in Manhattan is easy on the nearby
frequent and fast subway service. We found poetry reading, jazz, gospel
and story telling, much of it inexpensive, as well as enjoying the
well-known galleries and museums and fabulous New York food. So... book
now, make Easy Living Harlem your base and you'll thank us for this
recommendation!

HI Laurie. I also am looking for their phone number. I actually had Heidi's phone but don't have it anymore as I stayed at Heidi & Tom with my family twice. Please let me know as I am looking to go again. Cheers. Pierre.
Hi Sarah you should look up the website for email and contact Heidi (TA won't include email address) for rates and availability. There is wifi and breakfast is help yourself to English muffins and fruit, tea and coffee. You have your own pantry and fridge space to keep your own supplies for making your own breakfast.
I had a wonderful stay there in May 2015. The house is exceptionally clean, well appointed and great atmosphere. Great position to subway.
