The latest Freehand has recently opened in NYC’s Flatiron neighborhood. It will take over the former George Washington Hotel, which has a history as a home for creatives. That legacy will live on in The Freehand Fellowship: the hotel is launching a program in partnership with Live Arts Bard of Bard College, where selected artists will get the chance to live and work at the property and play an active part in its arts and cultural program. As with all Freehands, food and beverage is of the utmost importance. The restaurant and lobby bar here will be headed by West Village restaurateur Gabriel Stulman’s Happy Cooking Hospitality. Freehand New York will also get an outpost of Noho café, The Smile, and of course, a Broken Shaker bar.

I’d like to, but I can’t think of anything. Mine was a postage stamp-sized, hobbit hole-inspired room — I’m 5’10”, and I could touch the ceiling without fully extending my arm. Anyone 6’4” or more would’ve had to hunch over to enter the room. Other hotel chains with ‘cozy’ room sizes (rhymes with ‘squad’) make intelligent use of available space with clever and ingenious design choices. No such luck here. Nowhere to hang clothes; nowhere to put clothes; a mini-fridge so mini it would barely hold anything larger than a stick of butter. Not even so much as a plastic cup for the likewise minuscule bathroom sink.

I moved away from NYC three years ago and stayed at the Freehand on my first visit back. It was FANTASTIC. The “King” room we had was great, the staff was friendly and responsive and the neighborhood is one of the best for either tourists or business travelers. We also got a great rate.

The staff was friendly and helpful. Always took time to answer questions no matter how busy. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Even though I didn’t have my dog with me, I was glad to see other ones there.Great location, able to walk to great restaurants and pubs.
