Detailed Reviews
So, I didn't get the 4 dorm room I booked via booking.com but I couldn't be bothered to argue the toss, there wasn't anything different in price and its new york, you don't stay in your room!
This place has fantastic facilities. A full restaurant scale kitchen, two cinema rooms, a living area, a cafe, a dedicated locker room post check out, nice garden area and YOGA STUDIO! Offers usual trips, pub crawl etc.
Toilet and shower facilities are high quality and clean, plenty of male and female showers on each floor, hair dryers and great space to do make up etc.
The rooms are a bit basic, bunk beds, locker etc. Each room has separate air con/heater, it was warm and comfortable and you have control of the temperature. Full length mirror in each room and charging points on each bed station, with individual light etc. Extra blankets in the room if you need them, towels supplied.
Check in easy, key card entry and locked down after 11pm so only residents can get in. I felt safe and sound when I was there.
For the price in new york you really can't go wrong. 3 nights cost me £70, meaning I spent my money on seeing new york instead. If you're OK with hostelling, don't think about it. Book.

I have stayed in many HI's, but never the NYC one. I did like the area, it was easy to get around by subway, or foot, lots of food markets and food places to eat etc. My room was spacious, was in a 10 bed dorm, and not every night were the beds occupied. I stayed here over the Christmas Holidays, and the Xmas light tour with the volunteer from Brooklyn was amazing, highly recommend going on his tours, as he does a variety of tours throughout the year, he told us!
I felt after that, the social atmosphere was lacking, nobody in my dorm or the social areas seemed interested to meet others, and one of the nights was a pub crawl, and they left without me, and nobody in the hostel could help and tell me where they went either.
After 3 nights I decided to move to a cheaper airbnb as over the weekend before New Years it was super expensive, and had an amazing time and met load of new people in Brooklyn, which I highly recommend!
Nice hostel, beds were comfy (room was cold, I had to ask reception to warm it up, and they did and brought some heaters in there, which was super kind - room was far from the male toilets too, not the end of the world but a little annoying) but just felt like something was missing. There was no free coffee or breakfast, and even on xmas day there was no xmas meal, yet the Chicago one I just came from were offering this, with xmas movies, so that was disappointing. If you're after cheap coffee, there is a Ben & Jerry's next street along off on Broadway, any size for a $1. Bargain!

I stayed here for 4 days in late January.
The hotel's location is decent. It is 1 block away from a subway station so it's easy to get around Manhattan from the hostel.
While I didn't participate in any of the hostel activities (I would've if I was staying longer), they were frequent and it was always easy to find out what was going on. Great opportunity to meet new people from around the world if you have a chance to do them. When I return I'm definitely going to.
Bathrooms and showers were all clean and spacious. Importantly for me, the showers were hot and the water pressure was good. They even provided soap.
Beds were comfortable enough and it was always quiet at night. I never had trouble sleeping here.
I had no issues with the hostel whatsoever and I look forward to returning some time in the near future! Manhattan is wonderful to go and experience and this hostel provides an affordable, comfortable place to stay and if you're travelling solo, I couldn't recommend it more.

Stayed here one night, bed was comfortable, large size lockers, privacy curtains, clean, although the room was smelly from other people's sweet, security at night, common parts were fairly clean, towels provided for free, the location is good, just 5 minutes from the subway, safe but would not recommend to go behind the blocks towards the central park, rough looking people staring, might be ok during the day but not at night. The receptionist were friendly and helpful, they were happy to answer any questions, very busy during the summer, nice garden at the back, WIFI was ok. They charge to store luggage, smell of sweet inside the dorm and very messy.

I've stayed in HI Boston and New Orleans and two different hostels, one in Philly and another in Brooklyn.
This was the worst in my opinion.
The first night I stayed at a 4 bed dorm, the second time around I stayed in a 12 bed dorm as a last minute resort and ended up paying 120 dollars a night because it was the only thing I could find short notice after I had to cancel my Airbnb.
1) Bathrooms have no bathmat ot bath towel unlike other HI USA hostels. The toilets are restroom style and aren't the cleanest. The bathrooms to room ratio is also low compared to HI NOLA and HI Boston where you have nultiple proper private bathrooms and toilets in each floor but I reckon that's because Manhattan is expensive as hell.
2) One of the staff members who checkef me in at night was rude, others were nice.
3)Privacy curtains are not available in bigger dorms (at least not in the 12 bed one).
4) Poor ventilation/nasty smell. Wasn't an issue in other hostels I went to because you could open the window and the bunks weren't packed so close together. Rooms have air purifiers but they didn't work and I asked at front desk to fix it or to at least open the window by an inch to keep the room fresh but nothing happened.
The disgusting smell seeped into my clothes and I washed it at NY moore when I moved there.
5) Poor social life with bigger dorms. Even at 9 PM when you talk quietly older people whine and tell you to shut up (Quiet hours were from 11 PM). They do try to have activities planned which is a plus.
I have stayed in a dozen of hostels in North America and Europe including one with 14 beds, none of them had fhis problem because the bunks were spaced out, well ventilated rooms and plenty of restrooms and showers with bathmats or single use bath towels that you can put on the floor and deposit it in a bin for a wash.

A lovely, very reasonable, clean, friendly place to stay. Located on the Upper Westside, it's just one block from Broadway and the subway. It's also just a short walk to Central Park. Each bed has ample sockets, spacious lockers, and the bathrooms are always kept clean and tidy. The onsite cafe has a super selection for various snacks and meals. There's a large kitchen in the basement for guest to store, and cook their own food. Laundry facilities are also onsite, as is well priced vending machines.

My first impeccable hostel stay.
My first time ever staying at a hostel and I was blown away with the comfort level and their management. The hostel is located at the upper Manhattan 20 mins off the main attractions of the city. There’s a cafe located inside the hostel. The rooms are quiet and the bedding is comfortable. There’s a usb plug with all the beds and a set of towel and duvet provided on each beds. Lockers are also available but you need to keep a separate lock along with you to keep your valuable safe. Felt much safe throughout my stay and would definitely come here again.
Though one thing I was upset about is when I decided to increase my stay for a night and made a separate reservation I was made to check out at 8am and wait till 4pm to get a new room ready for me. The re check in process was rather slow. Apart form it it was a good experience overall

The hostel was huge and really clean. It’s really close to the subway so it’s a great base for staying somewhere a little cheaper but being able to access anywhere in the city easily.
There are a lot of school groups staying here and it’s got quite a quiet vibe, so if that’s not for you then look elsewhere.

Was apprehensive at first, but was pleasantly surprised! Clean spaces, safe area 2-min walk from subway (1 line, easy access to Times Square), nice amenities and window in room opened for fresh air. Bedding and towels are provided. Highly recommend for solo travellers on a budget!
Tips: Bring a lock and eye mask, and buy a weekly MetroCard if staying more than 2-3 nights (single rides add up quickly!)
There’s also a Five Below store close by where you can pick up any essentials you may have forgotten!
