My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights. Location is excellent, rooms are very clean and hotel was very reasonably priced. We really enjoyed our short stay here and plan on returning back given the chance.

The Inn at Union Square is an excellent place to stay in San Francisco. Just make sure your expectations are framed appropriately for what the property it is. It is not a traditional hotel experience in that there is no front desk, however it is definitely not an Airbnb given that it provides daily housekeeping service. The property LOOKS like a hotel once you're up on the floors, and my room was immacuately clean, reasonably sized for 1-2 guests, and overall styled nicely. A hair dryer, bathrobes, and basic toiletries were all provided, along with plenty of towels. I have stayed in a few hotels since the pandemic began, and this was the first time I have had my bed made up and towels changed in the "new normal" - I appreciated the service! I was also grateful that I could store my luggage for a few hours on the day of departure. I called "0" from my room phone and the daytime manager met me to take my bags, and then brought them to the front door when I came back later and called again. Generally the property was quiet (in fact, they have quiet hours from 9 pm - 9 am). I did hear somebody sneeze a couple times in an adjacent room, but that was no big deal. Do note that that this property is entirely online check-in and you do not receive a physical key, only a key code that works on the front and room door. Prior to my arrival I received an email from the property (via Expedia) with instructions for online check-in. I suggest completing check-in before your arrival and storing your key code and room number in an easily accessible place so that you aren't fumbling with logging in to the online guest portal while standing at the front door. Once you get inside the building, there isn't anybody at a desk to show you to your room, this is why you want to know your room number going in. I found my room number by logging into the guest portal, there was a banner across the top of the portal page that stated "Superior Queen 603" - meaning room 603. Overall the check-in and access worked very smoothly, you just want to be prepared for the contact-free experience.

This is a perfectly fine hotel if you dont plan on spending much time in the room. It's literally steps away from Union Square, super clean and has everything you need in a decent sized room. Nice TV, plenty of room and amenities in the bathroom, fluffy pillows. Downsides: our windows had a view of a brick wall, so it was almost difficult to tell if it was day or night outside. The all-digital check in situation was fine, though I was a little baffled since I didn't get a room number and wasn't told the access code worked for the room door as well as the front door until a guy popped out of the room out back on the first floor (guessing there were some cameras to observe the lobby). Narrow hallways, cramped common area. But hey for $135 with taxes in the middle of SF, I"m not complaining -- particularly since I booked direct after they matched the deals I was finding online.

I'm guessing the rave reviews here were pre-pandemic since there was no breakfast or happy hour that other guests mentioned. You have to do all your check in online now so you don't get anyone else involved, but my phone wouldn't reload when I got in the front door. No one was there but fortunately someone soon came out to assist me. I still like a greeting upon arrival even if a pandemic is going on. It's an old building and the elevator is a bit rickety. The rooms are nicely remodeled and the bathroom is great but the bed was too soft for my taste and the view out the 6th floor windows couldn't be worse with just rooftop ac units. Speaking of, the thermostat didn't adjust, which was frustrating but I liked the addition of a ceiling fan. There is one filtered water machine on the 3rd floor so it's extra effort to get drinkable water unless you bring your own. All in all, it didn't rise up to expectations.

The Inn at Union Square is a good value but the hotel itself is average. Rooms are clean and updated, which is always appreciated. There is very little onsite from an amenity standpoint-- no main lobby, no hotel bar/restaurant, no views. Unfortunately, perhaps due to covid, they were not serving breakfast as advertised in the photos on the website used for booking. If you are looking for a great value in downtown San Fran, it's a good stop-- but don't book for any sizzle. It's a nice place to lay your head at night.
