I would never recommend anyone to stay here. I have stayed at $10 hostels in Europe that have better accommodations than this hotel. On our first night, we were put in a room with two double beds. The mattresses on these beds were completely slanted and hard as a rock which made sleeping a grueling and painful task. We then requested to move rooms due to the beaten down nature of the mattresses. They showed us 3 additional rooms, all with slanted KING mattresses. All of the king mattresses in this hotel concave inwards and are not even remotely comfortable, and the double bed options are a laugh as well. If you want a good night of sleep, look elsewhere. This place was literally hell. On top of this, they only had 1 working elevator during a PANDEMIC. These elevators only fit 4 people maximum, and they had no stairs accessible. Getting down to the lobby at any time of day proved to be a horrible and long excursion which often resulted in an over-packed elevator during a global pandemic. The staff here did not go above and beyond to make sure we had a good stay here. All of our issues were met with blatant indifference. When we had to switch rooms, they deactivated the incorrect key cards (we were staying with family) and were unapologetic for this as well. You also have to reserve housekeeping a day in advance in order for them to service your room. If you don't reserve it, they will not come to your room to clean it.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any displeasure and inconvenience that resulted, and our assurance that they are not at all reflective of the standards that the hotel is known for. We will revisit the key areas that you have mentioned and truly hope that this stay will not deter you from visiting us again in the near future.

Ended up here after my rental went south and I decided I deserved to make the most of a bad start. Aman who checked in me was so sweet and patient with me as I recounted my day from hell, and my pure joy of being in his georgous lobby. The only thing I loved more was pulling right up to the front door, the stunning beauty of the entrance just hits you head on. Every single time I was met, I was greeted like family coming home, and that's really nice when you're traveling by yourself. Sal, Tony, Raffy, all the others, really made me feel welcome, and what meant the most was it was all genuine. I loved my room. It was up to date, overlooking Grace Cathedral, had everything you need, and the bed was med softness with great linens. The museum there is very cool too! Will be back again for my birthday in the fall!!!

It’s a San Francisco grand dame, but not so great in the time of Covid. During Memorial Day weekend: Allegedly due to Covid protocols (??) there were no bathroom amenities (not even shampoo) on my club level floor, no robe or slippers, extra towels or pillows. No minibar. Zip. (Someone please explain to me how deleting shampoo and conditioner and robes and the minibar has anything to do with Covid safety.) Phone was out of order so I had to use my cell phone to call front desk. No way to reach housekeeping. No room service. No Top of the Mark. (That I understand.) No restaurants. The club room had been turned into a public “grab and go.” (But no one told me this at check-in, and I had paid for club access with free breakfast and drinks.) My high room had a lovely view but an overpowering odor of vanilla room freshener. And the walls were paper thin. The guys next door began talking loudly and playing music at 7 am on the holiday. I could hear every last word. Then they had even louder sex. Argh. The bellmen were excellent and the front desk guy was very friendly. But I’m not coming back. The stripped-down, no amenities environment is depressing. It was a threadbare experience and a far cry from what other good hotels are offering under the same circumstances.

It is so great to get back to beautiful San Francisco now that COVID restrictions are loosening, and the Mark Hopkins is the ultimate getaway. This is one of my favorite hotels in the city. I love the history of it and it is a really special place. We stayed in a gorgeous suite on the 15th floor with amazing views. I just didn’t want to stop gazing at the views! The staff is absolutely The Best - friendly, helpful and very welcoming. We ate at the restaurant and the food is delicious- the avocado toast was so good. What a perfect weekend.

I was slightly hesitant booking the hotel because of some of the negative reviews, but I am very glad we stayed at the Mark Hopkins. The staff were exceptionally friendly and efficient. Housekeeping was excellent. And the all-day lounge/restaurant off the lobby served good food (and excellent coffee) for amazingly cheap-for-a-hotel prices. I think they should offer a better choice of wines by the glass, but things were otherwise fine. Given that we are still dealing with a pandemic, one has to cut the Mark Hopkins (and any hotel or restaurant), some slack. The entire staff seems to be doing their very best to make everyone's stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. That is all one can ask for. I look forward to staying there again when things are more normal.
