The Montage exceed all of our expectations. We learned it was originally built as a timeshare resort for the adjacent Ritz Carlton, the property was acquired by Montage several years after construction and is a mix of hotel guests, fractional and full time ownership. Since it was designed as a premium timeshare, the rooms are fully equipped residences with living room, dining area, full kitchen, laundry, 2+ bathrooms, and balconies that would compare in size to a standard room at the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons. Lower floors are considered garden view and upper floors are premier ocean view. The pool deck has four interconnected pools, two hot tubs and full service drinks and food delivered to your lounge chairs or private cabana. (Reserved for $400 per day.) Steps from the nearby beach, the “Beach Club” has another pool, hot tub and full bar. For a quiet pool, the spa has another pool, hot tub, and separate men’s and women’s areas with hot tub, dry sauna and steam rooms. (Full access included with room.) Food and drinks on property aren’t cheap but exceptional in flavor and quality. Just for fun, we did the 1 hour drive over to the Four Seasons for lunch. While the service was signature Four Seasons, we were surprised to see how crowded and cramped the pool area was and beyond the prime the facilities looked. There were so many people everywhere we turned it felt more like a well oiled cruise ship operation than a relaxing retreat. The brief experience there solidified we really lucked out choosing The Montage and can’t wait to plan our return visit.…
The Montage is the only place I've stayed at where you can be on vacation and feel at home at the same time. GM Matt Bailey and his crew are exceptional. I could rave about the service, the pool, the rooms, the location and Kapalua itself. But this time I realized that the lobby was built with Hawaiian architecture in mind, open air to allow the Kona winds to cool the property. And on the grounds there are plumeria and hibiscus everywhere. The chocolates and bed candies are from local vendors and there was even an endangered seabird nesting one property. Thank you once again to the Montage for being friendly to the tourist and the local resident, mahalo to you all.
We are presently staying here at the Montage. the condos units are gorgeous and amongst the nicest I have stayed in. Gabriel was wonderful at the Beach, but I haven’t seen a member of the management team since being on property 3 days now. Lack of leadership/expectation/training is absolutely evident. Having stayed at One and Only recently, Timbers, Ritz Carlton, and Four Seasons, I would say this food/service experience had been equivalent to Holiday Inn Express. If we ever return to Kapalua, we will not be staying at the Montage.
Like most people, we invest a lot of time researching accommodations for our holidays, and find it very frustrating when we end up with a room that is NOT what was advertised. Buyer Beware - when you book a 1 Bedroom Premier Ocean View Residence, it does not mean you are getting the view in the picture. In fact, the staff acknowledged that the pictures of the room view on the website are not actually from that room. We ended up in a room attached to the registration building at the back of the property, nowhere near the ocean, and primarily looking at and hearing a very busy pool area. Not at all what I had been sold online. I would have chosen to stay elsewhere had I known that the website does not accurately portray the room views. (See pics attached) From speaking with staff, the only rooms with real ocean views are in building 1 and 2, which are all 3 and 4 bedroom, so if you’re a couple you’re out of luck. The 1 bedroom premier ocean views are in buildings 3 and four… and the “premier” means you are on floors 5, 6, and 7, but has nothing to do with proximity to the ocean. Regular ocean view are on floors 2, and 4, and garden view is Floor 1. The hotel should provide accurate descriptions of their rooms and probably create a “pool view” category for rooms in the buildings that are way back behind the pools. Other comments: Pro - very nice staff - rooms themselves are in good shape - pretty grounds - food was good quality Cons - very crowded, felt like a cruise ship on land - beach is off property and a walk, no food/bev service - poolside/closer to ocean dining has limited hours, 11am to 6pm so sunset cocktails near the water are not happening - limited restaurant options, aside from pool bars, there is only one restaurant - located in a very windy part of the island…
The only place to go! The hotel is amazing, the staff is incredible and it was a perfect escape without that big hotel noise and feel. From the moment we stepped in and they addressed us by our names until we checked out everything was perfect. The food, the rooms, the staff, and even the guests were the nicest group. The Montage Chain and the Pendry's are our favorite group to use and we try to stay there when we can!!! Thanks to all for making our trip memorable. Lee W Scottsdale AZ
Lori at the Beach Club Montage was absolutely fantastic! She was so attentive and positive throughout our entire visit, making our experience truly enjoyable. Her upbeat attitude and friendly demeanor made us feel welcome and valued as customers. We were impressed by her knowledge and willingness to go above and beyond to make sure all of our needs were met. We had such a great time at the Beach Club Montage thanks to Lori, and we will definitely be returning the next time we visit Maui. Highly recommend!
We first stayed at the Montage Kapalua Bay eight years ago and we’ve been back twice a year since. This year we added a third trip and ended up spending a total of nearly 60 days at the resort. Every couple of years I write review and I always end up concluding that this property deserves more than 5 stars. It offers all the comforts of home combined with excellent service, set in the most magical environment one can imagine. The Montage Kapalua Bay is simply the perfect resort. Prior to discovering the newly opened Montage in 2014, we would visit a different Hawaiian island each year, spending about a week at one of the Four Seasons properties, the Mandarin Kahala or the Princeville. We loved them all, and they deserved their 5 stars. But the Montage is better. We haven’t stayed anywhere else in Hawaii since. It’s the best resort in Hawaii, and we believe one of the best in the world. Everything you read about the spectacular condo-style units is true. They’re spacious with fully-equipped kitchens that include a full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, oven/range, microwave and wine fridge. Every utensil and piece of dishware and barware that we have at home is there, including a salad spinner! The coffeemaker is kept stocked with Maui coffee. The bedrooms and bathrooms are large with high-end finishes and walk in closets. There’s a washer and dryer and bottle of detergent. Every unit has a massive deck or patio with a picture perfect view of the multi-tiered pool, the beautiful grounds and the ocean and the islands of Lanai and Molokai off in the distant. The views are nothing short of spectacular. The spa facility is like something out of a movie, with decadent relaxation areas, a private adult pool, and a gym that would satisfy any fitness enthusiast. The Montage’s first-class accommodations are matched and even exceeded by the quality of the staff. We were concerned because, like all hotels, the Montage experienced some turnover during covid. A few of our favorite people left. But the new hires got up to speed quickly and service didn’t miss a beat. Laura and Rick, the concierges, contact us before arrival to nail down hard-to-get restaurant reservations. Matthew in the restaurant always remembers that my daughter loves extra whipped cream and lots of drizzle in her hot chocolate. Rob and Zane in the bar start preparing my mai tai as soon as I walk in. Maria in housekeeping is one of the nicest people you’ll ever speak to on the phone. She and Yvonne know my daughter loves to draw and write letters. So every few days they leave an extra supply of paper on her desk. Sherrie and the kids’ club crew at Paintbox are wonderful. The beach is fantastic. The beach boys, Ricky, Gabe, Juan and Ivan are the greatest guys in the world. They’ll set up your chairs and umbrella and then check back throughout the day as the sun moves to make sure your umbrella is set correctly. The snorkeling is the best anywhere. You’ll see large sea turtles, spectacular fish and an occasional octopus or eagle ray. There are kayaks and stand up paddle boards, and it’s a great spot for boogie boarding. World-class surfing is a couple miles up the road. Our daughter was two years old the first time we stayed at the Montage. We had booked a week. As anyone who’s travelled with small children knows, after seven days, even at the best resorts, you’re ready to head home. That was not the case at the Montage. With all the comforts of home in a 5++star resort we had no desire to leave. We extended our stay twice and booked another trip as soon as we got home. We now stay 18-20 days each trip and it’s never enough. Sorry Disneyland, but The Montage Kapalua Bay is actually the happiest place on earth. …
The place is incredible and beach access is so convenient, hiking trails are awesome, and everything was above and beyond. service is what really sets it apart! Kiha and Jehica just to mention a couple.
We had the absolute BEST time at Montage Kapalua Bay. Aside from the crazy fancy upgrade they gave us, the bigger experience is the STAFF. Everyone- and I mean EVERYONE we met at the Montage was amazing. Before we went, the concierge staff was super helpful booking tours and experiences for us, and keeping it all organized. Huge THANK YOU to Kyle. This was a a very special trip for us, and he was extremely helpful and gracious. Once we arrived everyone was helpful, great at their jobs and KIND. I have to disagree with other reviewers who have knocked the staff- I think the staff MADE our visit amazing. You can find fancy spaces anywhere- but find staff that make you feel like they are happy to see you, even if they are working hard and who knows what might be going on in their lives- they treat you kindly and are friendly. That matters. We loved our stay at the Montage and would recommend it highly to anyone looking to visit Maui. Great on beach snorkeling, the Beach Crew are Awesome- thank you Gabriel! Laurie at the Beach Club was super great and mixed a killer Mai Tai, and the cleaning ladies are the best- thorough, thoughtful and sweet. And the LUAU! You should definitely do the Luau if you stay here. The food is delicious and the dancers/musicians were excellent. The coastline hike was beautiful both in the early morning and the dusk. bring water with you everywhere. They will give you reusable aluminum water bottles with easy to refill centers all over the resort. Also, I really appreciated the aftersun lotion provided in the bathroom.…
I first came here in 1983 and it was a quality hotel, but a much smaller operation that it has now become. It is too big and impersonal and the main focus seems to be to fleece the customer in any way possible. For example, a club soda around the pool is $12 plus all the taxes. A fill up is another $12 etc etc. A cabana by the pool is $400 for the afternoon, which is just silly. The hotel advertises that the 2 Kapalua golf courses are part of the operation, which they are not. We tried to book tee times, over the 5 days we are here, but there was nothing available. I went to the Plantation Course myself to see if I could sort something out. They were rude, unhelpful and made it clear they were nothing to do with the hotel. There are 2 restaurants with very limited menus, which is not commensurate with a supposed 5-star hotel. It appears that this is not really a hotel, but a collection of units which they probably sell to interested parties. The accommodation is very nice though, as a positive. I assume the property compares itself to 4-Seasons, but be assured it is not even in the same category. Avoid the place at all cost!…
