We absolutely love Maui Kai. It has the best view possible for a reasonable price( on Maui). There is only a sidewalk/sea wall separating the building from the ocean. This year we noticed both sides of the sea wall now have access to the beach beyond. So there is little beach directly in front, but just to the sides. We rented through vrbo that was represented by another service. My perfect stays. Using these services was $900 more in fees and cleaning than if we had rented direct from Maui Kai. The room we wanted was already booked so in desperation we went to vrbo. The view was stunning, but our unit had no closet space, but 4 hangers in a hall closet. No safe. No luggage rack. Lots of utensils including several weird ones that made us quite curious. One of our party has cooked in restaurants so we aren’t naive. It looked as if an estate sale drawer had been left there. The stays service did respond immediately and brought us hangers which we appreciated. The furnishings were lovely. But being a condo rental there is NO service. Not even towels. They did have 2 beach towels. Lots of notes up about taking care of things and being sure to report breakage. Perhaps they have been burned. But I’m sitting in a Napili condo right now and see none of that- just wash your sand off. Oh and exchange your beach towels daily if you want. We tried to speak to the M K front desk about renting next year and a woman rudely cut me off and told me to go to the web site. When I did call the woman i spoke to was in the office. Apparently not the rude one as she was sweet and even called the owners of the unit we were hoping for to secure it for us! Rating 4 because the value wasn’t there. We have stayed here before And will again, but not through vrbo. The highlight- a monk seal on the beach right next to us!…
Just had our sixth visit to Maui Kai, the second one in Condo 907. They have everything we needed in our room and the facilities are perfect. This property is perfect for adults who want to relax. Not really suitable for children or teens as no fancy onsite activities or restaurants for the younger crowd. If you want a laid back vacation, this is the place for you!
When we go out there, the traps are the first thing we buy to get rid of them.”, condo owner. This is a direct quote from the owner, after I contacted them upon arrival regarding the cockroaches and they asked me to go buy roach traps to put in unit for them. The unit feels like an old dingy motel room that used to be a smoking room. It just has that layer of old dirt that feels icky but cockroaches love. There was hair on the bathroom floor. There were corn chips on the floor between the couch and the coffee table as though the place hadn’t been swept or vacuumed. There was stuck on food on the dishes that we pulled out of the cupboards. The carpets are stained and feel grimy as well as the fabric furniture. There is a dirt layer around all the little nooks. The bedding is old dirty dingy and grey in the corners as though it’s been stepped on and unwashed for a number of years. I wish I had googled and read more reviews before I purchased 8 nights directly from the owner. Upon looking at reviews now I can see that this unit was described as filthy as far as back as 2011. Sadly, it still is in poor condition. I did not care that the building was old. I did not care that the furniture was outdated. But in the very least the place could have been kept better. And ya know what, I could’ve even dealt with that, but I just couldn’t except the cockroach infestation and the way the owners handled us regarding it. Our first impression when we walked in and turned on the lights was to see cockroaches scatter. This instantly triggered all sorts of anxieties and stress. We had paid in full in advance during peak season. So, I didn’t attempt to find an alternative location and go through whatever process it might’ve taken to get a refund if that was even possible. I wrote the owner and asked him to send exterminators ASAP. The owner was apologetic. Aside from mentioning that they had to get roach traps every time they go there; they blamed the building for not doing regular extermination and forwarded my email to the general manager. He said that he would make it worth my time if I went out of my way and purchased roach traps. And then he went silent. It is an awful experience having to waste valuable vacation time on trying to eliminate a roach infestation. Having to do all that cleaning, breathing in poison, being super extra careful with every bit of food, not being able to just put something down on the counters, etc. There was the exhaustion of being constantly stressed and worried that one might get into your luggage and you’d end up carrying an infestation to your own home. Even when I got home it took a few days for me to relax enough to put food on my counters at home because my brain was still on such high alert. I never have come across this problem in any Maui condos I’ve rented over the years. I used to live in Hawaii and experienced the island roaches. These are not the big, dark, flying cockroaches that are endemic to the islands. These are German roaches that are the fast multiplier type that have super tiny babies that can slip into your belongings easily. Despite our efforts we spotted and killed roaches on a daily basis. This took away all our relaxation. It added a ton of stress. It ruined our time. Halfway into our trip we just happened to notice a flyer posted in the elevator that we had to evacuate the premises by 7am on our last full day there as the building was having an exterminator come. Which of course was another stressor on us to have to leave so early especially on our last full day to rest. I don’t know about you, but for me vacation time is extremely rare and hard to come by in my line of work. And I work way too hard to waste my money and time on this mess rather than rest. After I got back home, I wrote the owner stating that I had expected to hear from him sooner. I reminded him that he told me he would make it worth my time if I went out and bought roach poison for him. He replied that he would send me $100 for the roach traps and my time. I thanked him and told if he is taking our “time” into consideration then the decent thing to do would be to compensate us for our time every day we were there. I asked him how I can expect to receive this $100. He never replied buta couple weeks later I gota check in the mail for $125. It is not that big of a deal to receive it. It was all about respect. I was willing to put forth my hard-earned money and give my precious time to them in trusting that their rental unit was in the very least a clean place to gather rest. But I can clearly see now that these owners are careless, irresponsible, dishonest, and unkind. Owners have no aloha! If these types of things do not bother you then by all means it is a great geographical spot on the map to stay. But I wouldn’t stay in their unit. I felt obligated to leave an honest description in the review so that any other shoppers can make an informed decision before chancing their hard-earned time and money on them.…
Easy check-in, we used AirBnB and the code was provided in advance, the unit (1004) has electronic locks and good heavy duty locks on the door with a double door entry so the wind is controlled. The deck from the tenth floor has stunning views. The bed was very comfortable with a great open kitchen and dining / living space. The doors to the Lanai open up nearly the whole wall! The office staff are helpful and friendly and it has direct beach access. You can see sea Turtles all the time. I've rented three long term condos in Kona, Hilo and Lahaina and this is my favorite. Though the others had private jaccuzis and in one case a pool the walk on beach and view makes this tips. Just two of us on this trip but you could easily bunk a kid or two in the living room on the couch. We are in our 50's and all the guests we bumped into were carer age and very friendly. The whole place was nice and quiet and observes a quiet window between 22:00 and 08:00, it's also a non-smoking property. Mix of owner and vacation rentals in the building.…
We stayed in room 505, family of 4. Apparently the units are individually owned, but centrally managed? So, this review is for this condo unit only and the common grounds. The view from the lanai is spectacular. Fantastic to sit there in late afternoon sun and watch the sunset. Had a large round table and 4 chairs outside, so we got takeout food and ate there quite a few times, whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. Can't leave window open all night the ocean is so close it's very loud, but the central air worked well, so we were comfortable. The condo itself and it's contents showed it's age and had some issues. The toilet in the one tiny bathroom is so close to the vanity you have to sit side saddle! The stove only had one working burner, the others got warm but not hot. The beds were horrible, no other way to say it. Master bedroom had an old mattress with a memory foam thrown on top. The bed frame was being held together with tie straps. The pull out couch was even worse. They are never great it seems but this one was very bad. the mattress had springs that you could see and feel. they brought us a memory foam on day 2 to help with that. Staff were great, very accommodating, but beds responsibility of the owners. We all had sore backs; this had a very negative effect on our experience. We like that neighbourhood, quick access to highway and Lahaina, Kapalua etc. Good eateries across street, easily walked to. Grocery store as well. With good beds, and a little TLC this condo could be excellent. They also need new beach chairs, umbrella in the condo. Pool, hot tub, BBQs and clubhouse area is great, albeit not on the ocean side of the building.…
Accommodations are outstanding in every way! Beautiful views across the channel of both Lani'i and Molokai. Lapping wave and whales with my morning coffee. Location is near everything you need. Neal and Vicky are phenomenal hosts!!
Everything was great until we checked out and went home. We received an email that said we did damage to the door which was fireproof. They also charged out credit card $3000 for this damage on our credit card……. By some higher power i took a video the first thing when we walked in and had time stamped dated posted on Facebook text to a friend proof that the damage was there before we arrived! If it wasn’t for that we would’ve been out $3000 because we had proof. I’m not sure if this is some kind of scam but the odd of me taking that video was all of Jesus himself! Whenever staying at any rental property take a video of the place right when you enter, take a picture of the door, front door, closet inside doors everywhere for proof. we did send the video to the owners and we did get our money back but if it wasn’t for that video we would’ve been screwed $3000 Beware!!…
I never did get to stay here. The omicron surge hit during the time I was booked to go and as someone who cares about my community, I made the decision to not travel during the worst of the global pandemic. Two other hotels (one in Hana and one near the airport), the place I booked the luau, the whale watching trip, the two airlines I'd reserved ... every single business did the right thing and refunded 100% of my deposits (the Hana hotel charged a fair $25 cancellation fee). Maui Kai Condos said screw you. We're going to keep your $818 deposit and earn double. Stay away from any business that puts their mercenary attitude before doing what's right for community.
The Condo was perfect, cozy & the best part was waking up to the beautiful view every morning. We saw a couple of whales & dolphins in the morning. At night the sky was lit up with stars. Slept with the balcony doors open & screen shut. Overall an amazing stay & we look forward to returning. Great customer service at the front desk. Thank you guys for everything!
Had an abbreviated stay this past week while visiting the island. We were looking for something different and with a better value than on previous stays. Did a ton of homework and landed at Maui Kai. Plus side: Location is good with everything you need close by and walkable. Building is literally on the water with waves lapping onto the sidewalk. Made for good sleep with the sliding door open. Negative side: Unit was beat. Visible rust on metal surfaces, hole in the wall, fire hazard extension cords and surge protectors on the floor. Woke up one morning and a piece of trim off the bathroom vanity had fallen off while we were sleeping. Not to mention that their decorator may have vision problems. Went down the first time to try and switch units to no avail. Once our neighbors started chain smoking camels on the lanai, the wife took over. Was able to cut our stay short (appreciate them doing this). Magically an alternate unit became available, but we declined. I poured over the photos of the unit we had and read a ton of reviews prior to booking. Please do better homework than I did if you are thinking of this property.…
