The Lotus Garden is a tropical delight in the old town of Hilo. With the budget traveler in mind, we have created a serene oasis providing 2 private guest apartments, and 2 plantation cottages.

This is an experience of 'old Hawaii.' Our garden is walled on all sides with old trees and a mix of flowers and ferns, making it a place to relax and enjoy the island's slower pace of life. Stepping outside the gates and onto the street, visitors will find lots of great local restaurants and live music venues. The Hilo Farmers Market is just one block away.

We stayed one night in December and wished we could have stayed longer. We booked the Sugar Shack for the five of us and it was perfect amount of space. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and the lodge owner dropped off coffee & milk for us in the morning. Such a nice surprise & so sweet of them. Bonus...this lodge is super close to the Hilo farmer's market and a supermarket if you want to cook your own food. If you want to eat out, make reservations in advance, the restaurant fills up quickly.

Quaint, charming hotel right in downtown Hilo. Rooms are super clean and nice! on the hotel grounds you'll find lots of tropical plants, avocado and mango trees. Jasper the owner is great. Probably one of the nicest hotel owners you will ever meet. You simply cannot go wrong here. If you are looking for a place to stay in Hilo, The Lotus Garden Inn in the place to stay. Highly recommended!

We were planning to stay over in Hilo after a lava boat tour this week, and I booked a cottage at the Lotus Garden online based on recommendation from a friend. I received multiple e-mails clearly stating that our reservation was confirmed. However, I received a call from the owner the day before our stay informing us that they did not have us confirmed and no longer had availability. We ultimately chose to drive back to Kona after the lava tour, rather than find other accommodations at the last minute. They should really look into their online booking agent. Just a word of warning, you'll want to call to book or confirm your reservation.

We were made to feel so welcome and cared for during our stay at The Lotus Garden! Jasper and Megan were really lovely. Amigo was a bit of jerk but added to the charm of the place. The grounds were pretty and green and our little house was bright and colourful and perfect for our stay. The Lotus Garden is smack bang in the middle of town so it's in a great location. We were given a tip by Jasper to try the restaurant Pineapples across the street and it was delicious. Also great is the Thai restaurant just down the street. Handily located is the Laundromat just around the corner. My family cannot recommend Lotus Garden enough. It may our stay in Hawaii feel more authentic and real, we loved it.

Mom and I had planned on camping but the rain kept coming, so we found this place on the web and what a wonderful surprise. We were lucky to get a studio for the night with such short notice. The whole place speaks come in, rest and relax. The sound of rain on a tin roof, sleep was easy. Hot plate, 2 burner propane stove and dishes available. This place is more like outdoor living than a hotel room.

I called at the last minute...the day I needed a room. It was so easy to book by phone and when I arrived late easy to check in. The bed was sooooo wonderful. I slept great. My only regret was that I wasn't staying longer in Hilo. I'll be back and will definitely book again.

I have been to Hawaii on four previous occasions, but always to Oahu, Maui and Kauai. Before leaving for my latest trip to Maui, a friend told me I HAD to visit Hilo, and to stay at the Lotus Garden. I followed her advice, and after all these years, I have finally found the authentic Hawaii. Hilo is charming - it reminds me of Key West before thousands of cruise ship passengers overwhelmed it. There are great little local restaurants that are a bargain, and beautifully friendly people. My stay at Lotus Garden was a unique treasure. My bungalow took me back to my time as a child when my family had a seaside summer bungalow at the beach. The garden around which the bungalows are arranged is charming, and the owners Megan and Jasper go out of their way to help answer questions. I was put off at first by not having AC, but discovered that at night I could hear the myriad of tree frogs, night birds and crickets that are a lovely serenade. I realized that in all my yeas visiting Hawaii, my AC had insulated me from the beauty of the evening sounds. Who knew!?! The Lotus Garden and Hilo have now defined my memory of what Hawaii is capable of being for the visitor from the mainland.

Loved this characterful accommodation. Particularly liked the downstairs shower under the cottage (open to nature, not the neighbours) and the feeling of being in a rainforest but being able to walk out the gate to find ourselves in the middle of Hilo. We stayed in the middle of July and were very comfortable with the fans that were provided. The only addition I would suggest is perhaps some seating in the undercroft for very hot days as this was beautifully cool even in the middle of the day.

I stayed for 4 nights in one of the studio apartments (Irene). I had reached out to Megan for accommodation availability and she responded with pictures which made it easier to decide. Due to a last minute change, I arrived later than expected, Megan was kind enough to give me directions to the property. The studio apartment was welcoming with a lot of natural light flowing in. I loved sitting in the covered lanai and planning the day’s activities. There were a lot of different plants and trees in the courtyard giving the place a very tropical ambience. It is when you step out of the gate that you realize, that you are in downtown Hilo. The location is very convenient; it is only located a block away from the waterfront. There is a supermarket across the street and several restaurants down the street. Megan and Jasper are great hosts. They live on the property and always at hand to provide information. Their knowledge of the area (restaurants, tour operators, etc.) make it for a hassle free stay. It is very gracious of them to share their living quarters with visitors to the Big Island. This is the place to stay, if you want a homestay experience.

We stayed two nights in the two dragons studio at lotus gardens in Hilo. The studio is just lovely, high ceilings, open and airy, beautifully decorated. It is right in the heart of downtown Hilo, opposite pineapples restaurant (really good food) and a supermarket and just a block back from the bay. It was clean and well equipped, down to a prepaid card for the laundromat a few doors up.
