Where do I start? The check in process was poor. We were ignored. When finally acknowledged, I requested she please give us a nice room. We got a room without a lanai, and a tub in the middle the size of a submarine. We are in our 50-60, really? She never mentioned it. I realized she only gave one access card, my husband went back and she claimed she gave it to me. When she moved some things, she gave it to my husband. I “lost” my credit Credit, she likely never gave it back, we were told it was found at the Gazebo, to which we never went. I got one voicemail, no one EVER tried to come to the room, nothing inour profile, so when I discovered it was lost, we were long gone and no one tried to contact us and we had to cancel the card. Rude bar tender, crazy room, expensive food at hula hula with kids screaming, the laziest valets ever, girl walking around with hand in pocket, my husband had to valet our luggage to the room and back. Totally unsupervised employees. Motel 6 quality and Marriott luxury prices. Will never recommend or return.

Hotel's Favourite
Please read the entire review: My stay did not start off on the right foot as there were some issues at check in that had me pretty irritated BUT the hotel staff went far, far beyond what they needed to do to make it right!! Our room was very clean, well maintained, nicely appointed, and very comfortable. The A/C worked like a champ, was quiet, and kept the room cool when we wanted. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and we slept like babies. The property is beautiful, accessible, and immaculate. Free (great tasting) coffee and tea in the lobby each morning. Plenty of free on-site parking. All the elevators worked and were fast, and there is a key card lockout so only guests can access the elevator. The pool was crystal clear and all the outdoor tables and chairs were clean. The on-site gift shop is one of the best I've ever seen and their prices were very fair - a true rarity at a hotel gift shop. This is by far the best property we've stayed at while on the Big Island and will definitely stay here again when in Hilo. If you're familiar with most hotels in Hawaii, you know that many properties look nice online, but are lacking once you get on property and to your room... this one is not like that. I say this property is better in person than it looks online.

Covid is no longer an excuse for lack of room cleaning - no cleaning provided despite a 4-night stay. I guess i'm going to have to manually check before reserving any future hotel rooms. Walkway to free parking should be lit. Great location and room and views. Bit spendy.

Nice hotel. Bay view is lovely, they had a singer in the bar that provided some evening entertainment. Our room got upgraded to a suite with a bedroom and living room space, very nice. Location is good, close to a lot of dining and not far from Volcanoes National Park.

We came in around 9:30pm to the hotel after a long day working and traveling. We drove up to the front lobby and told them that we were checking in but wanted to self park. The valet directed us to park in the self park lot across the street, which we did. We walked back across the street and past the valet lot to the lobby and waited to check in. There was only one desk agent and she was busy attending to another guest. After waiting for what seemed like 15 minutes, we sat down and I attempted to check in via the app as I thought it might be faster at this point. Unfortunately, my reservation wasn’t pulling up correctly or else I could have gotten my room by then. Another desk agent then comes out and instead of checking us in, assisted the first agent with the conversation they were having with the other guest. By this point another guest rolls up and has their bag ready to check in as well. Now the two agents are available to check us in. The first agent asked for my ID and card which I place next to her on the desk. She proceeds to chat with the other agent and after a couple minutes I decide to reset my account on my app and try to check in via the app as I’m not making any progress with the agent. She then looks up and ask me what I’m doing. After I tell her that I’m trying to check in with the app, she says that I could do that but it might mess up with her manual check in process. She finally proceeds to try to check me in. She checks me in, gives me my cold cookies and water, and then shows me the info sheet with the resort fee that includes valet parking. I tell her that I prefer self parking and that I had already parked across the street in the lot. She then informs me that I need a tag on my car from the valet to park in the almost empty lot for security. At this point I’m not shocked that the valet didn’t inform me that I needed a tag when she told me to park across the street for self parking. I walked back to the valet, got my tag, back across the street to my car and back to the lobby to get my bags and go to my room. I did give my review at least 2 stars for the cleanliness and amenities of the room. It’s only my first night of a five night stay, so I may come back to update my rating if things change. As a consultant who has traveled and stayed at hundreds of hotels (mostly Marriott and Starwood) around the world over the last 20+ years, I’ve seen my far share of different levels of hospitality. This was definitely at the low end and not what I would have expected from my previous experiences at Hilton properties. I do have another stay booked at a Starwood property in Kona at the end of the week so hopefully that will redeem this trip to the big island for me.

Our family of five from Texas and Oklahoma visited Oahu and the Big Island for Spring Break! We had planned on a split stay for our week on the Big Island - the first 3 nights at Hilo and the last 4 nights at Kona. But after our stay at the Grand Naniloa and attempting to move to our Kona hotel, we ended up back at the Grand Naniloa for our entire week. So my review will be for the two different room types we had because my review is different for the two types. We booked 2 rooms for each room type. The first 3 nights we were in a “2 Queen Beds Oceanfront End Unit with Lanai”. We were not told when I called to get information on the rooms that there is only one of these room types on each floor, so being there with our daughter and grandsons, this made it hard to go between each room as the rooms were on the complete opposite end of the hall from the elevator and on different floors. But the rooms themselves were very clean, had comfortable beds, good thick towels. The view from the lanai was Amazing!! The furniture and the rooms themselves are a little run down but I would stay in these rooms again!! After our horrible experience with the Kona hotel, the only room type available was “2 Queen Beds Ocean View Room”. When booking I did not realize the room would not have a lanai (what ocean front hotel does not have a lanai on an ocean view room). These rooms still had very nice views just no lanai, but the rooms themselves were very run down..the carpet was bad and very torn around the edges, the paint was peeling off bad in places. But the room was very clean which is what really matters!! I booked through my Hilton Honors App and am very disappointed in the fact that I only got credit for 1 of the room stays towards my nights to maintain “Diamond’ status, so I will be calling on that and also only got the points for both rooms but only for the last four nights not the first three nights, so hoping a phone call will get all my Hilton Honors points and night count straightened out! We did enjoy the warm chocolate chip cookies!! We also sat on the patio one of our first nights there and wanted to order food. After sitting at our table for about 10-15 minutes with noone coming to our table, we thought we needed to go to the bar to order but was told by the bartender that a server would come to our table. It took another 10 minutes before he came to our table and then it took close to an hour to get 3 flatbread pizzas. Once they finally arrived they were very good! So a few nights later, we thought we would give it another try. After waiting for about 20 minutes and no server coming to our table we gave up and went somewhere else to eat. There is live entertainment in the bar/lobby area and that is nice and relaxing to listen to and watch the dancers in the evening, so that is a plus! When calling for extras such as towels, coffee cups, regular cups, coffee, etc you need to be very specific with the number of items you need because they are very stingy with what they bring you. Housekeeping is by request only and you have to request the day before! With all that being said, I would consider staying at the Grand Naniloa again only because it is a Hilton and I save and use Hilton points all the time. The hotel is an older hotel but has so much potential if they would just put a little care into it!!

Pluses: comfortable and functional room, beautiful grounds, nice public areas, fast and free valet parking, good service, free coffee, convenient surroundings, great views. Cons: Quality of food beyond breakfast is so-so, property can use some TLC, area outside property is a bit dodgy (two vacant properties)

Upon arrival there was a loud music performance going on in the lobby. The lobby is open to the bay and there is a bar where you get a free drink or two for each day you are there. The free drink choices are very limited, but you can get other drinks for purchase from the bar. The interior hallways to the rooms, and the rooms themselves have low ceilings. The room was small. i would recommend getting a room with a balcony so you can sit out and enjoy the nice grounds, views of the bay, and when visible, Mauna Kea. When we were there, you could see the glow from the eruption at the national park. The bed was comfortable. The bar was not always open when advertised. One of the bartenders at night was friendly and worked hard to quickly get drinks to the crowd. One of the ladies that opened was quite slow to get drinks. Another lady was friendly. The pool is small. You can borrow free snorkeling equipment from the front desk and hop in the water. It isn't the greatest snorkeling, but we enjoyed going right from the front of the hotel and being able to view fish. Considering we were eating at a waterfront hotel in Hawaii, the prices for food, didn't seem bad, until we got the food and realized how tiny the portions were. The gift shop staff was friendly and where you will be sent if looking for a concierge. You can walk to the nearby gardens or other beaches such as Coconut Island. There is a free local newspaper at the desk, and free overcooked, yet still yummy cookies also available at the front desk. If I were returning to Hilo, this is where I would stay.

I keep coming back to this hotel - the last time it was still in the throws of covid and things were a bit weird. This time it was packed and staffed appropriately. I was upgraded to a suite at the end of the hall with the heat (it was cold and rainy) not working in the living room/bathroom just the bedroom. I had it cranked the entire time and it helped. The major restaurant isn't open, but the makeshift one is as it was on my last trip. The front desk was kind but aloof (it's happening a lot) and the valet outstanding.

We spent two nights here, booked with points. Our 10th floor room was basic and compact, with limited bathroom counter space, but the view of Hilo Bay was spectacular. Yes, there is a burned-out building next door, but that's not the hotel's fault, and the water view is what commands your attention. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The main drawback was the very bright lighting in the hallway that seeped in around the door frame and peephole, and the gap in the drapes at floor and ceiling. If you like a dark room for sleeping, be prepared to come up with some creative light-blocking techniques. We had one dinner (a pizza and a salad with seared ahi, which was delicious) and one breakfast at Hula Hulas; it was pricey, but each order was really enough for two people (we had leftovers). Welcome drinks were good as well. There was a wedding each day of our stay, so the parking valets were swamped -- we did have a bit of a wait at times, but it was not due to lack of effort on their part. The hotel's location was perfect, close to the pretty Lili'uokalani Gardens, and not far from historic downtown Hilo.
