I am high-performance insulation contractor and building science fanatic so I am very aware of issues when they are present and I am commonly hired by others to diagnose issues like these. I was travelling with my wife and 3 boys under 8 years old. This place is bad. SEE PICS. Room 423 needs to be immediately taken out of service, and all finishes, furniture, and wall surfaces need to be replaced. It is a very active mold environment. Upon entry into the room, you are immediately hit with a terrible odor. What is that, you say, is that dirty socks or wet dog. This isn't a little odor, it's punch you straight in the nose odor. You also get hit with insane humidity levels in the room. Has anyone ever dreamed of living in a petri dish? This is your chance. Go ahead, take a few more steps in and feel the wet carpet soak into your socks. Mmm, so soothing. The humidity is so high that the bedding feels wet. It is hard to explain how bad this was. I did a very brief inspection of the room and observed enough water damage and active mold, that I had seen enough. I immediately went down to the front desk and asked for a different room due to unsanitary, unhealthy conditions. I was told that the hotel is sold out and they don't have any other rooms available. It was 8pm, I said I can't be the last person to check-in and someone else will need to take that room because I can't have my children in that room. He said that I was the last one, but by this time, my trust in this guy had fizzled. As I was walking away, he offered me a commercial-sized bottle of Febreze. I almost laughed because I thought it was a joke but he was serious. I thought about it for a second and decided I better accept the offer because I needed to keep all options open at this point. I returned to the room with my trophy of a 32oz Febreze bottle. My wife couldn't find the humor in it. I immediately began looking for other hotels. There was literally nothing available within 60 miles. Soccer tournaments, weddings, and who-knows-what-else jammed up every room in La Crosse and neighboring communities that weekend. I checked AirBnB, VRBO, Expedia, Priceline, Kayak, TA, EVERYTHING, but no options. Panic was setting in. My options were disappearing by the minute. I'm thinking "I can't have my family stay in this room for two days". I honestly started considering booking a room 60 miles away. This was that bad. After pacing around, identifying additional problems with the room, looking at my kids coloring wondering if I'm jeopardizing their health, watching the fear in my wife's eyes that we are going to be stuck here, I decided I'm heading back down to the desk and I'm not going to be friendly this time, this is life-or death this time. The guy at the front desk could see my attitude has changed since our last visit. I blatantly told him that my family is not staying in that room and he needs to figure something out. He said he'd call his manager. I waited for 15-minutes in the lobby and he returned. He gave me a new set of room keys. Not sure how a room miraculously opened up but I didn't ask. He offered some free snacks from the snack bar in the lobby. I declined. I returned to the room and told my wife I got a new room. Her eyes lit up like I had just bought her a private jet. We moved to the new room. It was much better. I wouldn't say great, but survivable, dry, and lacked the pitiful odor. My family doesn't have unrealistic expectations. We don't expect perfection. We can handle adversity. But this was next level. The fact that this hotel books out every weekend, at rates above $250/night demands that some of the lofty profits return to the hotel rooms, so that occupants have a clean, healthy environment to house their families. This is where this place fails. It's gross and some major rehab is required, but their attitude is that they are booking out every weekend as-is, so why make improvements. PLEASE STAY ELSEWHERE. SOME ROOMS ARE OK BUT SOME SHOULD BE CONDEMNED. DON"T PLAY RUSSIAN ROULETTE WITH YOUR FAMILIES HEALTH. I honestly think that a local health inspector needs to evaluate this property to ensure that it can remain open. Holiday Inn Corporate, if you see this, please take notice. This place is not abiding by your requirements. It's obviously making you money, but making you look bad in the process. I will definitely be looking for alternatives to Holiday Inn's for the foreseeable future.…
Horrible customer experience. I had brought up a complaint to the staff and they took my number stating that I would get a return call from a manger. After (5) days without hearing anything I called and ask to speak to a manager who was very rude and disrespectful. He laughed when I told him about my poor customer experience with his hotel and he said that “because we’re across the street from the civic center, we have more business than we can handle”. Extremely rude and disrespectful behavior from a manager. I will never stay at any holiday Inn properties in La Crosse, WI again. A well deserved one star rating.
While the room was clean and comfortable the hotel should have more staff on site at night to control the crowds of drunks in the hall. There was shouting, swearing and banging by a large group of college age students from midnight to 3 in the morning. Staff (singular as only one person was on site) asked them to be quiet on five occasions which only worked for a few minutes and then it would start again. At times the ruckus went on for half an hour at a time before they were asked to be quiet. We complained to the front desk with no success. In the morning the staff could be heard complaining about the mess they made and the puke they had to clean up. They should have been sent packing so that other customers night was not ruined.

Fantastic price! Loved the location - loved the suite, nice and roomy - fabulous bed and pillows! - loved the pool and hot tub - giant hot tub - loved the bar/restaurant in the hotel - walking distance to bars and restaurants and only about a block off the river. We will be back!
