It was built as a residence for The Governor in about 1665,when the Duke of York was appointed to Lord High Admiral. Directly opposite the hotel is the remains of the old blockhouse which was part of the artillery defence established for the River Thames by Henry VIII in 1539/40.

We checked in for New year - gala dinner, bed and breakfast. The external and reception areas are a little tired looking but once through the first set of doors everything was fresh, clean and appealing. We had a one bedroom suite which was spacious, clean and elegant.

We have been to this hotel many times staying up to 6 days per visit. We had reservations on this visit as there has been hygiene problems with the kitchen and food. We stayed in the Alexander suite it was not good the smell of damp and mould in the shower room was horrendous.

Hi is it easy to get to tilbury passenger terminal from this hotel .
The tilbury ferry crossing is 5 minute walk from the hotel.
