The staff here are lovely, but the hotel... faded glory is being extremely kind. My single room was tiny, tatty, the window was extremely dirty, the bathroom window was totally clear and looked out onto the street - privacy was compromised. Neither window would open and the room was hot and airless. There was no shower (looks like it had been removed a long time ago), the bath had black bits in it. The tiles had seen much better days in the last century. One tap on the sink has lost it's top. The flat screen TV is tiny. There was an electric extension strip across the floor with wires trailing. Not very safe. I had a shock when I was awoken by the sound of crashing bottles at 5AM, when the empties were collected.
The location in the centre of Newport is good, but this really needs some money investing in it. I realise this would raise prices, but I'd rather pay more for a decent room. I left early because I couldn't stand it any longer and went elsewhere. I received an updated invoice that first refunded my unused nights, then added a cancellation charge exactly equal to the refund.

I won't ever stop here again.

I read the reviews, but was swayed by the price of £91 for two nights, much cheaper than the Travelodge, a stones throw away. The hotel looks dated but quaint from the outside, better from the inside and I was pleasantly surprised.

The hotel, and room 31 in particular are clean and tidy, the WiFi was not great so I used 4G, the bathroom is carpeted... but overall, the single room was fine.

The hotel is just about central, although Newport is small so an 8 minute walk and you are in the town centre.

My only complaint is that the 2nd floor room was TOO DAMNED HOT. I needed to go to the local B&M to buy a cheap fan. The room was sweltering, even with the window open it was impossible to sleep. You can borrow an Iron and ironing board, there is a hairdryer and flat screen TV in the room, but the male on reception gave a very quick "No" when I asked if they may have a fan.

Top Tip to the Calverts Hotel - invest in some fans and put them in all of the top floor rooms. I cannot stress how impossible it was to sleep until 01:00 in the morning when some heat left the room - for this reason, I doubt if I could return, as I spent two uncomfortable nights in room 31. It wqs approximately 23 degrees in the sun, felt like 35 degrees in room 31.

The Travelodge Newport has fans.

I was pleasantly surprised by Calvert's Hotel.
I initially booked for a two-night stay in Newport and extended it to a five-night stay as I was having such a nice time.
The hotel was kept very clean and the public rooms (reception and bar) were very well decorated and presented.
The room had a brand-new wooden sash window installed and a brand-new radiator, and the curtains seemed new too.
The bed was comfortable, the furniture was smart, the view was excellent, the bath filled up well with plenty of hot water.
I reported a small spillage on the staircase and it was cleaned up immediately.
The location was fantastic - a stunning view of the Guildhall façade and right in the town centre, perfect for exploring the historical streets and squares.
It was within walking distance to Carisbrooke Castle, which was a really interesting day out.
The staff were friendly and professional, and nothing was too much trouble for them. I was made to feel very welcome at the Hotel and I couldn't have enjoyed my stay more.
It was great to be able to walk down Quay Street and have breakfast at Quay Arts on the terrace overlooking the water in the late September sunshine.
It was extremely quiet overnight and I had such good nights sleep - it was so relaxing.
I can really recommend a stay at this historical hotel.

My friend and I stayed in room 18 (a family room consisting of a double bed, a single bed and an en-suite) during this year’s Isle of Wight music festival. I was delighted when the lovely Vicky in the bookings department contacted me around 9 months after I’d asked to be included on the waiting list to tell me that Calverts had a room for us. Having later read the reviews I was a little nervous, but still happy that we would be only a 15 minute walk from the festival site. I didn’t expect much and was delighted with what we found. The room was very clean, the bed linen crisp and the room was light and airy. Fresh towels were offered when needed, the all important loo roll topped up during a daily maid service (which I definitely hadn’t been expecting) and tea and coffee facilities provided. Previous reviews will alert you to the fact that this hotel is not a five star establishment, so don’t expect that. And yes, the hot water situation isn’t good. But what you can expect is a really friendly service (Vicky went out of her way to change our booking to a room with separate beds, and a member staff is on duty ALL NIGHT, every night to let customers in), a beautiful old building (which is admittedly tired), and a clean, bright room. I’d recommend room 18 if you want a particularly quiet room because it’s off the main corridor. You will also be a stone’s throw from a truly beautiful gem of a town with the best tea room I’ve ever visited, a jewellery shop selling fabulous handmade pieces and many other boutique shops. I would stay there again for sure - in fact, my friend and I have our names down for next year. Parking tip: the hotel has no parking but at least one nearby short stay car park offers a parking permit to cover longer stays. Our three day parking permit cost £22).

Dont waste your money. Entering the room the first thing i noticed was the mirror wasnt straight so walked over to straighten it but it was fixed to the wall! Hand basin not big enough for the taps, toilet not fixed to the floor and shower curtain and fixings for a shower but no shower ( even little bottles of shower gel left for us!). My husband went to ask where it was to be told if it breaks we dont fix it. When we tried to run a bath ( which looked like it needed a good clean) it took 40 mins to get two inches of water. Reading the info they leave in the room it says you cant have takeaway food in the room and when we opened the window the gutter outside was full of takeaway boxes !

My partner come here with his mate and the staff was so rude, the rooms was absolutely horrible. On arrival they tried saying that I didn’t have enough funds in my account to pay for the room and it has been declined when I got through to booking.com they said they have give me false information because it has all gone through successfully. My partner goes to the room and the room was full of flies, mould, dirty bedding with blood on it and bogies on the wall, when he went to tell the front manager on desk they said there was no rooms left but when he was leaving the next day and told the young man at reception he said there was loads of rooms left. Tried ringing up to get some sort of an apology or refund but they completely blanked me

I have stayed here twice in late summer / early autumn this year and been pleasantly surprised. There is fresh decoration in all the bedrooms / staircases / corridors I saw, new carpets, new bedlinen, furniture and new very comfortable mattresses. The plumbing is not good but this is more difficult to fix and may take time. The reception staff were all pleasant and helpful and for the money it was unbeatable value. If you want a luxury hotel then this is not the place for you but if you need inexpensive accommodation in the centre of Newport you could do much, much worse. Good luck to Calverts!

Very spacious twin room. Very clean. Decor in the room looked new. More places to hang things in bathroom would be useful. Lots of space to sit on ground floor.
Parking is on the street. Breakfast is available but we did not sample it this time as we needed to move the car by 8am so we decided to go onto our next destination.
Really liked the staff - very friendly and helpful. Deserves more visitors. Would be good if they plumbed in their smartlooking coffee machine, too.
