Detailed Reviews
Spent a few days cycling around the island. The Castle Lodge was a fantastic stay. Not only was Avril a fantastic host but the ability to have our bikes safely outside in the garden was a real bonus.
The room was very comfortable and Avril was more than accommodating to helping with the heat with cool water bottles.
Her Covid measures were impeccable and we felt really safe while we were there.
I highly recommend here for anyone looking for an amazing base to go from is you are exploring around d around the island either by bike or foot.

Our stay at castle lodge guest house has been amazing! I would usually opt for a something like a travelodge as it’s what I’m used to, but this place has inspired me to try other local b&bs etc when I travel in the future. Everything about this place feels homely, from the tidy and clean rooms, to the shared communal spaces like the garden and small lounge, but most importantly the lovely owner (I think) Avril! She is so friendly and to be honest it feels like staying with a friend or family member that you haven’t seen for a while. The complimentary breakfast was also lovely and definitely worth getting up for, which is a big thing for somebody to say who loves a lay in!!
The only negative I would say is there was a lot of single use plastic on arrival in my room e.g toiletries and covers for things like the tv remote. However, I also saw a positive in this fact to as it let me know that castle lodge is taking the extra steps necessary to make sure everything is clean during COVID times!
Overall, this will be a first choice if I ever stay on the island again!

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Very pleased to hear you felt like it was a home from home , that’s the difference between a guest house and a chain hotel. In regards to the single use , yes your right this is due to Covid measures to cut the risk of transmission. All advisories gov and council, so trying my best through these difficult times. Lovely you say this will be your 1st choice on any return visit, so hope to see you in the future. Avril

A very clean and professionally ran guest house, with lovely rooms. The full English breakfasts were exceptional. The guest house is perfectly centrally positioned to see everything on the Island. There is a full size Castle at the end of the road and plenty of local Pubs, restaurants and shops. We had a fantastic holiday and will definitely be staying here again.

We had a really comfortable stay at the Castle Lodge B&B. Avril is an excellent host and prepares lovely breakfasts for her guests. The location is brilliant making all parts of the island accessible. Close walk into Newport town meant we could eat out without driving. Would recommend.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us on the island. Nice to hear you would recommend us . Glad you liked the breakfast . We must just mention when booking with agents due to high commission charges the breakfast cannot be inclusive in the room rate. However if you book direct by phone, email, or on our website it is. We also offer discounts through the website . Only mentioning this as you gave value 4/5 . However in comparison to other B/B in the Newport area we think we do offer great value.

The rooms are basic and clean but over priced for what you get. The land lady was very unfriendly and we had the impression the whole time we were there that she didnt really want us as guests.
We were given a side of A4 page terms and conditions on arrival. Saturday night we were kept awake till the early hours by the landlady and her friends !
On depature she didnt thank us for our custom and we had to step over her sweeping her outside step because we had been considerate and left our muddy outdoor shoes outside as opposed to bringing mud into the reception area. Over all we felt very unwelcome and would not stay there again.

What a first class place to stay on the island. Would recommend. Close to the town.About eight minutes amble.
Parking , which is always a bonus on a town centre location. Excellent breakfast, cooked to order. Rooms , spotless and spacious. Room we had opened up onto a patio, which was handy during recent heatwave.
We had to leave earlier than normal breakfast time on our last morning, but the owner was there prepared to make breakfast for us. Lovely lady , very welcoming.
Certainly looking forward to returning here, soon.

Firstly, I have to say that the reviews on here surprised me a bit because the room we were in (room 9) was none of the glorious things reviewers have been writing about (apart from the cleanliness bit). I was very puzzled on arrival as I usually book on the overall views of TA contributors if I can, as I find them to be honest reviews. They can't all be wrong or over egging the cake so I am going to review ROOM 9 ONLY.
Avril is indeed a very friendly lady. My husband and I had a warm greeting and were shown to our room very quickly and efficiently. Avril even offered to take one of our bags.
First impressions on the approach to our room was that there was a slight damp smell in the corridor although this did not extend to our room.
First impressions of the room were that it was very small(a twin room) but clean. The layout was awkward and needs to be sorted out so that it gives the appearance of space..i.e the wardrobe and chest of drawers can go in the alcove and one chair can be removed as it is surplus. The TV should go on a bracket on the wall et voila! more room! The decor whilst passable is not great and the yellowing and chipped paint on the doors and skirting boards speaks volumes about the room. The room needs a spruce up!
The tea and coffee making facilities were basic...no biscuits for us! and besides that the shelf was way to small to boil a kettle 'safely' really. We didn't try; it didn't seem as we were welcome to as it was so hard to achieve that simple goal.
There was also no hair dryer or iron...though these might be available on request; i do not know but the very least I would expect would be a hair dryer (I nearly didn't bring mine on the assumption that most modern B&B's have them).
The left hand side of the bed doesn't have a table...which it should ...there is room...and not having one for bits and pieces eg glasses, water etc is not good enough.
The bathroom door was a noisy and awkward sliding one which wanted to derail itself every time it was moved and wouldn't shut fully, so we had to leave it slightly open with a gap...a little unnerving..even husband and wife need privacy! ALSO on the bathroom, there is the smallest sink known to man...with a tatty shelf perched above it which made trying to bend to use the sink to brush our teeth nigh on impossible! I kid you not! I had to rest my head on the shelf to have a half a chance of getting the toothpaste etc in the sink and not on the floor. My husband says that he managed by cupping his hands and using that as a temporary sink...totally unacceptable really and I am VERY surprised that NO ONE has picked this up as it it very obvious.
The shower was OK but very small...too small really for my broad husband and too small for me...there is a shelf in there too, taking up valuable room..my advice...get a corner shelf...
NOISE! a bit of a bug bear and one again I am surprised hasn't been picked up by other reviewers...as mentioned before..the bathroom door slides on rollers...allegedly...except it doesn't do this quietly...and in room 9...you can hear the adjoining rooms slide theirs too...even at 2 in the morning...then the light goes on with the extractor...and you have quite a significant disturbance!..my husband put in ear plugs.
On the second night there were people in the communal courtyard, which at first seems like a nice touch, except for those actually trying to sleep...we heard another couple's entire conversation and they also had music playing which was nice for them (it's their holiday too) but it wasn't to our taste!! even if it was... they seemed oblivious to others who might be sleeping. There are no polite notices guarding people against making too much noise after a certain time of night; probably because Avril is not aware of it. but it might be a consideration for the future.
You can also hear adjoining rooms having their early morning ablutions and other noises pertaining to an occupied room!
BREAKFAST
The breakfast was good! Served hot and very pleasant...except for the sausages which need to be changed for tastier ones...on the second morning all the guests requested that the sausage be left out of the breakfast which kind of tells you something and one I would be taking notice of if I was in charge.
Avril was very accommodating and attentive to our needs and also really knowledgeable about the area; she also had some very useful directions to the nearest pub...The Eight Bells at Carisbrooke...Jerry, we are given to understand is also very nice; but we never saw him but heard his voice from yonder room offer us some advice about walking to the Medina Theatre!
Overall...I would sum up our two day stay here as average but no more; not the worst place we have ever stayed in nor the best...just average. It did what it said on the tin, we slept there, we ate there..but that is about it.

I have to agree with some of the other reviews - not the friendliest B&B we've ever stayed at. Before being shown our rooms we had to sign to say all damages must be paid for & pay in full (although had been mentioned when booking). Castle Lodge was clean (although having watched 'Four in a bed' I did run my finger along the top of mirrors & found dust! Toilet paper folded to a point (Why) yet it must have been cheapest paper we have ever had to use! Towels were not much bigger than large hand towels so you needed two to get dry after a shower. There is tea making facilities in the family room but you have to make it on the floor because there isn't enough space on the shelf & we didn't get biscuits like another reviewer said. On a arrival we were told breakfast was between 7.30-8.30 (not much of a lie in) & the menus were on the tables, when we came down in the morning we were asked what we'd like, we asked what was there & we were told we should have read our welcome pack to choose & this was to be found in the bottom draw of a chest of draws in one of the rooms (we were only there two nights & didn't have enough stuff to open all the draws!) having said that when the breakfast came (full English) it was very nice. It's not all negative - the beds & linen were comfortable & very clean but I also found it to hot in the bedroom at night & had to leave a window open (although we would advise that the artwork in the double room of the family suite should be changed they are enough to give you nightmares! I did feel Castle Lodge was good value but lacked any personal touch, just being asked what we'd got planned for the day would be have been nice.
