We were six people (ages 16-81) in two tipis doing some exploring in Big Bend. Buzzard's Roost is close to Terlingua Ghost Town and, overall, we enjoyed the alternative tipi concept. The main issue is that Luna tipi is advertised as 4-person capacity, but that's an unreasonable claim: the couch/futon opens into a unstable slightly-larger-than-twin size area with a bar in the middle lengthwise. No way two normal-sized adults can sleep on there, so we had two adults and a full-sized teenager in the main bed and one adult on the futon. This should be advertised as a 3-person tipi. When I emailed to ask, the reply was "I will send someone from maintenance over today to look at the couch. One of the legs may have come loose from the last guests opening it up." There was never any sign that maintenance came and no follow-up from the off-site management.…
I LOVED this experience! Our tipi was cozy and beautifully furnished with a big plush bed. We had fans, coffee, a fridge...all super convenient INSIDE THE TIPI!! We hiked and explored all day and we chilled by the firepit and stargazed all night. This is the only kinda camping I ever want to do. Extraordinary experience in a lovely little town with really cool hosts. Our favorite part were the visits from resident pups, Topo and Luna! Can't wait to come back in the fall!
The tipis are a neat idea, but unless you're looking for a sweat lodge experience, be sure to go in the cooler season, and definitely don't bring small children. The tipi was unusable from about 9am until 1am due to extreme temperatures. Had to cut our trip short and leave after the first night. Was not given a full refund. Each tipi has a fan and an AC unit, but the unit is too small to cool the tent and the tent is not insulated so it won't work until the temperature is below 95 degrees (inside the tent, not outside).
The facility is well kept and has everything you need for a quiet, relaxing night in the desert! We were there during the record high temps of June, and the owners very thoughtfully put in AC units before our visit - which was a life saver! We put our teens and college kid in the larger tipi and ourselves in one of the smaller ones. There is a clean bathroom for all three tipis to use and two showers- one indoor, one outdoor. This is a PERFECT place for stargazing. Nearby Terlingua Ghost Town had several good restaurants. Highly recommend!
We had an amazing time at Buzzards Roost in our tipi! It was a truly unique spot that my kids will remember forever! Our tipi was equipped with everything we needed to make our stay comfortable including fan, fridge and Kuerig and extra blankets! The outdoor shower was really nice too! We loved the hammock and saw the most amazing sunsets and the stars at night were unbelievable! We could see the edge of the Milky Way!! Truly a memorable time! Obviously timing is key when going to this area of Texas so plan accordingly but if you want to try something different this is a great place!
