I had to be in Wilkes-Barre recently for work and my company chose this property for the few nights I was there. On arrival, I noted that there were a lot of cigarette butts in the parking area and landscaping. Not a good omen. The front desk clerk was perfectly pleasant and I was given the requisite property information. Those with elite status take note: this property does not offer enhanced internet at all. There was some work going on in some hotel hallways during my stay (replacement of carpet and wallpaper?) but there was no discernible noise on my floor. Still, it would have been expected for the hotel to post an advisory when reservations were made. The room proper was generally clean. I noted the appearance of a very large black fly one evening, very curious as to how it got in my room. It was slow-moving and I was easily able to kill it. A few minutes later, another appeared and was also quickly dispatched. The next morning, a third made an appearance though after that one was killed I saw no more. Is there something decomposing somewhere?? Gross. In the bathroom, I noted the presence of hair in the sink, on the floor, in the shower and, curiously, on the ceiling. The chrome toilet paper dispenser was coated in a thick layer of dust and grime. Gross. There was only one bar of soap given, so I had to move it between the sink and the shower as necessary. Also, no lotion. There were two computers in the lobby for guest use and I found myself in need of one one evening while there. Unfortunately, neither worked. One had network issues and wasn't connecting while the other had an inoperable mouse. Frustrating. I was downstairs early the first morning for breakfast and the attendant greeted me within a few minutes of my arrival. She asked if I would like to have any eggs, bacon or waffles as these items were, curiously, kept in the back and away from guests. I availed myself of eggs and bacon and found them very standard issue. But why are they kept in the back? Is this a COVID issue? Why was the breakfast attendant not wearing a face mask or gloves as most food workers do? Gross. I came down to get a cup of tea during the last hour of breakfast service and dispensed hot water from the hot water carafe into my cup. Looking into the cup, I was horrified to see coffee grounds. Seriously, are the carafes never cleaned?? Gross. I also noted that many of the grab and go items that had been available when I had come down for breakfast initially were not replenished and were absent during the last hour of service. The second morning of my stay, I was down for breakfast about 7:00 AM. This time, the attendant made no offer of eggs, bacon or waffles. I did overhear her tell another guest that "unfortunately, the eggs are still going to be a while." Why? Did breakfast not start at 6:30 AM? I also noted that there was no yogurt, something that has been available the prior morning. Overall, I found the hotel tired. Others have pointed out the issues with age but most of the things I encountered were preventable and could have been easily addressed with proper training and execution of duties. Really, does management care at this property?

Thank you so much for your detailed review of our property. We greatly appreciate any and all feedback. With that being said I just wanted to point out some items regarding your stay so that in the future we can appropriately accommodate you during your travels to the Wilkes-Barre area. In regards to the outside area we do apologize for the cleanliness. We do have a staff member who does do a property walk each morning and our landscaping company did just do a fall clean up last week, so I will ensure that these items were taken care of, as we do daily go into the lot to ensure a clean curb appeal. In regards to the insects in your room along with the cleanliness issues this is very concerning and will be looked into immediately. Marriott has changed their standards to 1 bar of soap per room and that is the smaller bar. Of course we would have supplied you with additional amenities if requested. In regards to our breakfast service we do have the staff preparing this in the back, plating and bringing out to the guest instead of having our traditional buffet line where anyone and everyone would be breathing over the food and touching the equipment. We do give our employees the option to not wear a mask if fully vaccinated, which our buffet attendant is. In regards to not wearing gloves, obviously when preparing she would be wearing the gloves, but I am not always sure that she would be serving with gloves. This is something I can speak with her in regards to. Depending on our occupancy she is only able to make food in waves. The eggs may have been depleted by previous guests and then would have had to have been made for the next group of guests. I do apologize for the carafe filled with coffee for your tea. Again, this is definitely preventable (as you noted most of the issues with your stay were). I just wanted to shed light on some of the other areas. I would want you to know that I do care deeply for the guests along with my staff and during these times we are trying the very best that we can to ensure a positive experience for all of our guests. I do apologize that you found the experience lacking and would hope that you would give us another opportunity to impress you should your travels bring you back to the Wilkes-Barre area. I can assure you that the cleanliness matters you experienced will be dealt with immediately.

Let me start by saying I am Marriott Platinum and have stayed at some 70 nights of Marriott properties this year. Many of these were Fairfield Inns across the USA. I am judging this against other Fairfields and not any preconceived wish of what i want a Fairfield to be. The room we got was clean, the bed comfortable , rugs cleaned and vacuumed. Housekeeping had forgotten to leave soap and shampoo so i went to the desk and got some. Not a big deal. Breakfast had most of the usual Fairfield items. Waffles , Bacon, bread cereals banana muffins coffee Juice. There were no scrambled eggs which is what we typically eat with bacon or sausage as we tend to stay away from the carbs. I also didn't see any Bagels when we were there. We definitely found enough to eat but not our first choice of food or expectations based on many Fairfields. Everything we had tasted fine and met Fairfield standards. The rooms themselves are older and outlets are at a premium, they would be well served to put some additional plugs via an attachment to the outlets. The room was quiet and we had no trouble sleeping. it is an older room but i look for cleanliness not state of the art. Heck my house was built in the 1980s..... The staff, however were all outstanding and everyone was trying /doing their best. TGIFridays offers a 10% discount if you show the room key. The restaurant is a few feet away and walkable. My wife and I prefer to walk to dinner after long travel. Other restaurants are close but not walkable as the traffic patterns are heavy. not a showstopper for most but when I see a restaurant 3/10 of a mile away, I assumed i could walk to it. Overall, This is an acceptable hotel. In comparison to most Fairfields it's a little on the lower end due to age and other items mentioned. It is clean acceptable and in a safe enough area if you want to stay with the Marriot brand. There are also other hotels available nearby as well. Set your expectations this way and you will be fine.

The Sevice was great but the room had a musty smell. My wife and I spent the evening trying to find the smell which seemed to be coming from the carpet. I don’t know the cause or source but it took over the entire room. Staff of the hotel was helpful and friendly.

Rooms are very clean, service is always excellent, comfortable beds, etc. We always look forward to staying here as it's a convenient lodging establishment off the interstate. The only disappointment is the breakfast buffet - bland and not realy any pastries to speak of.

We hope to have our breakfast buffet back up and running in the next couple months. Everything for us was great and the help at the front was great. Meta( I think that was her name) was very friendly what a great asset she is to/for the Marriott. She gave us all the info what I ask for and she was above and beyond that most clerk in person would ask for. .
