My husband and I stayed in the Davis Brothers room for three days. This room was large and had a cozy king size bed. The shower was large with two shower heads and it had beautifully treated wooden shower walls. The gal who checked us in was very friendly and helpful anytime we had questions regarding the hotel or town of Union. The owner was also nice and had a great sense of humor. This hotel has a TV room with a small library, and places to sit on the front deck which was lovely in the evening as it cooled down outside. Highly recommend this hotel. It's a nice change from the basic commercial hotels we are used to staying in.

Aside from the dried landscape, which I'm sure stems from conserving water because of the current drought emergency, the Historical Union Hotel is a beautiful building which is full of 100 years of history, so I was told. This was evident by the hotel-related news articles and artifacts that lace the walls of the hotel. The owner was very friendly and accommodating despite not having an operating restaurant, and the housekeeper was always smiling and friendly. I stayed for 3 nights and my room was very clean and cozy. It was a very happy, yet relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend putting this Hotel on your bucket list of places to visit, and don't forget to check out the other beautiful buildings in this quaint little town.

This is a good place to stay if you like staying in well preserved buildings. The lobby has beautiful wood work and tile floor which we were told is all original. We stayed in the Davis brothers room. Lots of antiques adorn the walls. The bed was comfortable. There is a wall sink in the room which would lead you to think the bathroom facilities would be small. The big surprise is the amazing shower. Large, double shower heads, almost has to be seen to be believed.
While the website mentions the restaurant, that was not in use while we were there. It was full of tables of antique type objects so didn't look like it was coming back anytime soon. You could get some coffee in the morning but that's all. The eating options are very limited in Union itself. We ended up at Bud Jackson's in LaGrande, great place for family and good food.
It's a very cool place to stay, you will feel surrounded by history.

Poor experience. Pictures are not accurate. The check in counter and “restaurant “ are filled with clutter. My bathtub wasn’t clean so I asked for cleaner and a sponge which I was provided. He told me the housekeepers are young and new. When I returned the cleaner the owner told me he called and fired both his housekeepers. I asked him why he would do that the rest of the room is fine! I told him they just need some training and supervision. He was extremely upset and said he just can’t deal with it and shouldn’t have to. He said he was closing down the hotel and walked off. I had no intention of posting this but he treated me poorly as well as his employees.

I have had such a wonderful time at the Historic Union Hotel. Every single visit has been such a pleasant and positive experience. My credit goes to the owner, Charles Morden. He is kind and funny and makes everyone feel like family.

You will not find that kind of service nearly anywhere else. I wish more businesses were like this hotel. If you get the opportunity to stay there, you will really enjoy it. Not to mention the unique decorating and antiques!

If you enjoy anachronisms just a little off the beaten path, this is the place for you. Union about 20 minutes from highway 84, so the town has already been forgotten by time a little. The Union hotel was perfectly charming in all it's imperfection. We were greeted warmly but not over-enthusiastically by Rosie, the Old-English-Sheepdog/Receptionist. Rosie's assistant then checked us in and shared a little of the history of the place with us before we went to our room. Named The Clark Gable Room on the off chance that he may have stayed there while fishing local streams, it was decorated with a combination of old sportsman gear and Clark Gable movie posters. My partner and I also noticed the room smelled like our grandparents' homes and was as quaint and comfortable and our memories of visiting them as children. We enjoyed exploring all the eccentricities of the space. The deep pile carpet and obviously older mattress activated my bed-bug paranoia just a tad, so we took a few extra precautions.

DO NOT book at this hotel if you prioritize modern convenience and luxury.

DO book at this hotel if you have nostalgia for small towns, warm welcomes, and the comforts of Grandma's spare bedroom.

Relive the West's glorious past here. Creative and comfortable decor. Great food and friendly help in the restaurant/bar, and awesome ambiance. A nice grand place to hang out. Charlie and the two Bills are charming. The Wifi was passable. No TVs in rooms but there is a sitting area with boob tube. The place is not for the finicky though. Lukewarm water in the spacious claw foot tub was a big disappointment. Owner was not apologetic, but insisted it hadn't happened before. If a couple of dead flies bother you, you might not be happy. Pack light. It's a walk up, and I believe that's why hotels had bell hops in the old days. The professionalism could be taken up a notch, but the owner really bought the place for personal enjoyment and was convinced by the locals to re-open, so what you get is pretty much what you get. There are a lot cheaper lodgings down the road in La Grande, and they are cleaner and you get hot water. Still, I would go back because of the atmosphere. I think it's worth the short detour on the back road off of I-84 between Boise and Portland, simply because places like this are such a relic, the rooms are creatively decorated, and the bed was comfy.

Under new ownership and management this is a great place to stay. Ruth & Charlie make you really feel welcome, and Rosie is their unforgettable, very friendly sheepdog. What a sweetie. Our two shih tzus were welcomed and played with by all. Making our stay even more enjoyable.
We enjoyed the quaint, quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Had a marvelous, romantic dinner in the newly opened restuarant (by reservation only now - so many people want to eat there and they hate having to turn people away). Well worth a phone call.
For lunch we walked to the Stop Light Cafe...felt like we had stepped into Mayberry! The sherrif and depudy came in and greated everyone (just like Andy & Barney) and chatted for a while then left with their donuts and coffee. How wonderful to see and experience such a great place as Union.
Went up the road a bit and toured the Hot Lake Museum but was glad to return to Union for the evening and listen to one of the patrans play the beautiful piano and hear others chime in and sing along.
Thank you Ruth & Charlie & Rosie for such a relaxing, memorible weekend.

Hi there, it depends on the room for the outlets in the bathrooms. There is no televisions in the rooms. We do have a television room with a library. Some of our rooms do have refrigerators. The Restaurant is not open right now due to the lack of business from the corona virus We hope to open it soon. Give us a call and we will be able to fully explain. Thank you for your interest in the Historic Union Hotel We look forward to hearing from you.
