I would like to be able to give this place a really good rating because the property is really cool and overall has a great 'ski lodge' feel. But there were too many issues that detracted from the place's great 'look' to allow me to do that.
First, of course the location is exceptional. And the look of the lobby and the other common areas is also wonderful. But the staff was pretty clueless and not very helpful. And the room was OK at best with a bed that was concave from use and walls/doors with absolutely no sound insulation. Honestly, we could hear our neighbor snoring and coughing as clearly as if he had been sleeping in our room. And on the first of our 2 night stay another neighbor decided to have a party in their room from 2-4 am. We could hear every word said by every person in that room. The hotel does provide earplugs at check-in, so they are clearly aware of the problem. But issuing earplugs instead of actually doing something about the problem is pretty lame, as is using the 'its an old classic building' excuse to avoid installing better doors etc.
We also paid for a room with a private bathroom, so not the cheap bunk rooms that share all the facilities. But we were apparently still looked at by management as 'cheap' guests as we didn't get robes to go down to the outdoor pool in. We called to request some and were told that only guests staying on the other side of the hotel were entitled to robes. Guests on our 'low class' side of the hotel had to go to and from the pool in just bathing suits despite the temperature of 28 degrees. I would think that $280 for our tiny room would have entitled us to robes as well.
We ate at the Rams Head both nights and the food (while definitely over priced) was really good. The restaurant looked pretty good but was beyond our budget.
So would I recommend staying here? Yes, it is a beautiful classic property. But just be prepared for the room and service issues.

It's a bit tired and pretty dated, and there is absolutely zero sound-proofing between the rooms (to the point they provide earplugs). Breakfast was expensive and forgettable. The staff seem very much "temp" staff. They didn't have a huge amount of knowledge about the services or area but they were nice people.
However, the location of this place and the air you breathe when you walk out the door cannot be matched. I would go back but I'd try to secure a room that would be quieter.

We stayed in condo #8 at Government Camp. There were many great things including easy check in, nice check in people, easy to just throw out garbage at end of stay and start dishwasher, spacious condo, beds clean, liked the smell of the provided shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, easy route to timberline lodge and ski area where you could use the amenities for free like the game room small but we still had fun, great sauna and it was amazing to sit in the outside jacuzzi while it snowed. Also the food and service at the Timberline Lodge Rams Head Bar was excellent and fresh. The few problems we saw were: the closet doors were either broken or not there at all, the blinds were dirty and the showers did not look clean (bring shower shoes). The place was dated except the kitchen was more updated and we enjoyed the coffee and use of glasses and dishes. For the price, we enjoyed our stay. Under cover parking great. Bring a shovel to remove snow from upstairs balcony - the beauty of the fallen snow and peace in the morning on the balcony was amazing. I would have loved to sit in the seats and had my coffee.

We just got home from our stay at the famous "Overlook Hotel" - Timberline Lodge 😊 My dear friend had her Shining themed wedding there over the weekend. The outside of the hotel was used in the movie so she just had to have her destination wedding here! This place is gorgeous. About 5 miles up a winding road off of the main highway, so prepare for the weather! We were lucky that it was very clear on the way up. During our stay we got about 6" or more of snow, so I was worried about the drive. The road was plowed well and the fresh snow made for a gorgeous drive out. The hotel has a wonderful lodge feel with HUGE Wood beams and a giant stone fireplace in the middle. There is a fantastic patio that gives you a perfect view of Mt Hood (on a clear day)
Our room was very small with a lot of original charm. That being said, don't expect state of the art accommodations. The bathroom was tiny, the shower felt like a coffin and the water took about 5 mins to heat up. It was also never as hot as I would have liked, going in and out with a super quick burst of cold water in between the hot.
The food was delicious, but be prepared to spend minimum $20 per person per meal. They offer buffets for each meal in the main dining room. We had a breakfast and lunch buffet and the food was wonderful. If you want a bit cheaper, walk across the parking lot to the day lodge, where you can get more cafeteria style meals and grab and go for much cheaper (Also great portions and it was delicious!)
We don't sky, but this place looked like a fantastic place to do so. The day lodge was so neat because we thought it was a tiny little building, but when we started exploring it, we found out it goes downstairs like 4or 5 levels to a food court, lounge with fireplace, and pretty much a mini mall in the bottom floor. There is a ski school down there and you can catch the lifts from that level.
The staff was so nice, one person in particular was Micheal at the front desk.
We really enjoyed our stay at Timberline! Such a neat place, and an unforgettable experience being at a place where one of my favorite movies was filmed.

Yes, it's expensive ($300/night during the summer on a weekend). You pay for the privilege of staying at a very unique WPA lodge in a spot that is one of only a few in the country. And the lodge knows that it's older, and some of its amenities are antiquated. (It gives you earplugs, for example, in a little envelope that says "we're listening!" Cute.)
If you can get past all that, and you have a love for the old '30s style of WPA architecture, built when stone and wood were plentiful and craftsmanship was prized, then this is the place for you. This place, like its counterparts at Mount Rainier, Yosemite, Yellowtone, and a handful of other parks, is old-world stunning. It sits right on the Pacific Crest Trail, but at 6,000 feet, if you suffer from any altitude sickness, maybe skip staying here and stay at Govy (Government Camp) instead, which is 2,000 feet below.
Our room looked to the south, towards Mount Jefferson, over the patio where FDR dedicated the hotel in 1937. Great place for history geeks. The rooms are cozy, quaint, and drip with history. Wood and iron are everywhere, and they benefit from an overhaul 5 years ago which did not strip the character of the place at all. Each room has a fan - thank goodness, because the wind whipping up the mountain somehow did not penetrate our room at all, and it got pretty stuffy. We even asked for another fan, and while they didn't have one, they did give us a swamp cooler which worked really well.
The staff could not have been nicer. Our first room was on the top floor on a corner, and it howled with the wind. The kiddo with us was pretty freaked out, and they moved us to another room without question. Everyone wore masks inside the building, except at the restaurants. We ate brunch at the Cascade Dining Room and felt safe there, given that we were one of 5 seated tables in the whole place.
Not sure we'd go again given the depths of our altitude response (we are sea-level folk, as it turns out). But this place was fun and gorgeous and has so much character.

We arrived to find popcorn on the carpet and blood on the tile floor of the bathroom. We told the front desk of the room status and asked if it had even been cleaned at all, we were concerned due to COVID that the room had forgotten to be cleaned. And right now things should be cleaned to a higher standard than usual. They assured us that the room was cleaned and told us they’d forgotten to do some parts. The woman at the front desk was nice about it and offered to comp our dinner. She said she had to check with the manager who obviously told her no, but we did get breakfast vouchers (of course, any alcohol wasn’t included and it costed the lodge about $40 for our breakfast). We had a nice dinner then returned to find that the heater we switched on two hours earlier wasn’t working (it was 14 degrees and stormy that night) and that the shower had all sorts of hairs in it and obviously hadn’t been cleaned as well. We called the front desk again about the freezing room and was told maintenance would “come up in a bit” but seeing as how it was 10 p.m. we decided to use the tiny space heater in the room which worked just okay. We ran into a woman in the hallway who told us her room was also freezing with broken heat and asked if we had an extra heater.
The lodge is beautiful and the food is good but we would rather have a clean room or have been moved to a room that had been cleaned. They should have comped the dinner. The blood was a big biohazard. For the cost they should at least check that the rooms are cleaned and that the heater at least works. Those things seem pretty basic.

I'd been here before just to check out the lodge & for a drink at Ram's Head, which was really nice, a great place for a day visit. Did not have the greatest experience staying overnight. First, we (me, husband & almost 2 year old) were placed in a room right next to the elevator and with a window just outside the outdoor patio for the bar/restaurant (this is during Covid, so a lot of people were outside). I asked for our room to be changed, given that we had our almost 2 year old with us and didn't want it to be noisy when she was trying to sleep. They said they could switch us to a different room, they physically checked to make sure it was clean, but when I got up to the room with our luggage in tow it was not clean at all, the bed had been slept in, champagne glasses & empty bottle out, the tops of chocolate covered strawberries on a plate. I called the front desk and they had it cleaned, but this whole thing took an hour or more just to get settled into a room. When we stayed, it was mid-July, not that hot during the day, in the high 70s or low 80s at the lodge, but our room was west-facing, right off a stair well with little ventilation, really hot & stuffy, and there is no air conditioning at the lodge. There was a fan and an unscreened window, but it did not cool off at night and my husband & I had a terrible night's sleep due to the heat. One other issue is the only dining option after 6 pm is the Cascade Dining Room, where the prices for entrees are exorbitant, over $40. Make a reservation if you want to sit inside (agin during Covid times, so not sure if the lack of indoor seating was due to needing to space tables apart), otherwise you'll be outside on a patio eating your $40 entree off your lap. There is not much other than the Cascade Dining Room for breakfast either, other than the WyEast Cafe, which is really a ski lodge cafeteria, only had breakfast bagels & burritos other than refrigerated items & cereal bowls.
Overall, I'm glad we stayed here only 1 night. I imagine it being a better experience during the winter, and would try it again then!

The lodge is a wonderfully historic building with many artistic touches from mosaics to wood carvings. The patio behind the lodge has a great view of Mt. Hood, and it's hard to beat sitting in a chair with a glass of wine and just looking up at the mountain. With that said, the rooms are quite pricey, especially for the ones that share a bathroom. I stayed in a bunkbed room, and while the bed was comfortable, the walls were paper thin. You can literally hear every word of a normal volume conversation, and my next door neighbor decided to start a conversation at 6:30 AM. So don't expect to sleep in. Also, the shared bathrooms were never cleaned that I could tell, and since I was staying only one night, it was easier to skip the dingy showers. Plus the only restaurant that seemed to be open on a weekend was the Cascade dining room, so casual breakfasts were not available. But it was still worth it to stay in such a wonderful location.

Timberline is magical. The staff was attentive, the lodge is well maintained in pristine condition and the menus for dinner and breakfast in the Cascade Dining Room offered a good variety. The entire staff was attentive and the feather bed and down comforter super cozy.

Very hospitable and attentive staff, met our every need with friendly and genuine smiles. Staff was prompt to come to our room and light our fireplace for us and brought us more wood when we were running low. The room was clean, with soft featherbeds, comforters and pillows, and the towels were very large and fluffy. Complimentary Mt Hood spring water was provided to us in glass bottles and the Kuerig coffee maker was great to have in the room, along with more coffee pods whenever we asked. There was also complimentary coffee in lobby. We paid a flat fee of $35 to have a mini fridge brought to our room for use of it all weekend long. There was also plenty of complimentary ice available for our ice chests. We were guests as part of my daughter’s wedding. We had a king bed fireplace room with space for a rollaway. It was very large and accommodated us well. We had a continental breakfast set up for the wedding party in the morning and later a hotel catered light lunch on platters on stands with champagne in ice buckets. During this time, we had 3 hair and makeup artists in our room providing services to 12 people, 3 at a time (and two wheelchairs at the same time), while others were in and out of the room, steaming dresses and getting ready. When the hair and makeup artists were finished, there was plenty of space for the bride to get dressed with the assistance of her bridesmaids and for two photographers to capture the final getting ready photos. The room was amazing! It was a beautiful venue, the hotel catered food for the reception was excellent, as well as the bar drinks and serving staff service. The hot tub was a decent size and temperature and the towels (though not as large as the room towels) were plentiful. Snow was on the ground but the roads and parking lots were clear. We didn’t want to leave this beautiful place and will return again for sure. All of the other wedding guests had similar comments and were very impressed with the lodge with no complaints whatsoever.

There are lots of hiking trails starting from there, including the Pacific Crest Trail.
Be sure to take a guided tour through the lodge; its history is really fascinating.
We stayed in the fall of 2018. We had a great time. We thought the lodge was perfect. Yes, it was built long ago but that is what makes the place so special. The staff was very good to us. We had a fantastic dinner in the main dining room with a tasting menu and wine pairings that could not have been better. We also had two dogs with us and could not have been better treated by the hotel. We will return but prefer to travel to historic lodges in off season to avoid the crowds. Maybe you should visit then.
I paid a little under $300 for one nights stay (queen bed with bathroom) and dinner for two. We were allowed to pick any two entrees (unfortunately they were out of the rib-eye steak, which was $74). So our two dinner entrees totaled about $100. Drinks, appetizers, desert and tip would be additional. Might want to see what is included in the dinner deal.
Yes if you like the outdoors, I would definitely take a hike. A beautiful setting.
