American Cruise Lines provides one night "complimentary" room at the Holiday Inn Portland, Columbia Riverfront before the first day of the river cruise to ensure that all guests arrive prior to sailing. The taxi ride from the airport to this hotel was a little over $50 through very heavy traffic around 3pm. There were several people checking in who were also joining the cruise.
We were greeted at the registry desk right away. Our guest packet was ready for us. The young man at the registration desk was able to answer all of my questions about connections to the American Cruise Lines. He showed us all the documents that were included in the packet and the time and location of the ACL buffet breakfast and where to board the bus to Multnomah Falls the following morning. I was unpleasantly surprised at the distance to our room. With recent issues, we both experience limited mobility. We needed assitance to get our luggage to our room which was a very long walk from the registration desk.
I believe this is a frequent convention / large party venue. As we passed the large convention room, people were removing tables, chairs, and other items. The carpet in the hallway was dirty with all types of litter including glitter, sequins, paper and even stomped out cigarette butts. The departing convention group must have thrown quite a party.
Our room was very large with a balcony and partial view of the river, mostly view of the pickle ball court. Overall the room was very nice. I believe that the departing convention or party had most of the staff working double duty. The carpet in our room had not been well vacuumed. It needed considerable work. There also was a large dust ball on the ceiling partially above the bed which was disturbing. And some type of unidentified detritus lurking underneath the door to the adjoining room. The kingsize bed was large, but overly soft, in my opinion. Four pillows on the bed were also soft and flattened out quickly. The bathroom is very large. Fixtures are dated, and somewhat dated granite on the counter, but everything in working order. Shower water pressure was OK. The bath towels are large, thick and fluffy ~ very nice.
I would certainly stay at this hotel again if I return to Portland. I am reviewing the restaurant, the Jantzen Beach Bar & Grill with a separate review. The restaurant dinner was awesome!

Had a wonderful overnight stay here. Wendy let us check in early. She recognized my platinum status, gave us bottled water. We were given a beautiful view of Mt Hood and the Columbia river. Hotel has a pool, hot tub, walkway along the Columbia river.

Fantastic breakfast! included in the room rate. The biscuits & gravy the best best. The fruit is fresh & cooked exactly as designated---well done English muffin. Staff was pleasant. Portland is a sanctuary city so, go figure about that. View of Columbia River adds to the experience.

This was a top notch experience, staff was friendly and super fun! Rooms were very cool, huge bathroom and each one had a balcony overlooking the green common outside area and the water. You can take an evening or morning walk out to the pier just steps away from the hotel. Huge parking lot and super close to DT Portland. I will be staying here again, very satisfied with my stay!

Grossly overpriced and would not accept a discount at check in. Hotel is old and was filthy. Two large groups were there for breakfast and the restaurant made everyone stand in line and order from one overworked employee. Getting through the order breakfast line took almost 30 minutes, then you had to wait for your order to be cooked and all of the tables had been taken. Never let them put you on the interstate #5 side of the building with the trucks 24 hrs a day. We paid almost $270 for a room shown on trip advisor for $140

After a day working at the IndyCar race, they closed the restaurant/bar down at 9:30 PM. Given the fact that we were not back at the hotel until after 9 PM, this was actually ridiculous on their part, knowing who their guests were this past weekend. There were more than 100 of us staying here, and they would not extend their hours to accommodate dinner or drinks. Extending the hours is the safest thing they could have done for their guests given the location is very UNSAFE to travel outside of the property, as noted by the multiple security people working outside who warned us not to venture out.

Hello U4381VAchrisp, Thank you for the review. We appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback about your recent stay. Our hours of operation for our restaurant in the evening are open until 10pm Sunday-Thursday and open until 11pm Friday and Saturday. We do execute last call for our bar service 15 minutes prior to our closing to comply with State law. If you happen to know the specific night that we were perceived to close early, please let us know and we can investigate further. We are always happy to flex to the needs of our clients and in fact did stay open until midnight on Monday 9/4 to specifically accommodate one of our racing teams as they had requested the adjustment in advance. Our apologies for any miscommunication and we hope to see you again for next year's races.

The coffee shop is a good example of how an indoor eating place should be arranged in the time of the virus. The hotel requires masks on the premises.
I ordered a fresh vegetable omelet and it really did have fresh delicious vegetables. The coffee was good.
Best of all, they had gluten free bread for toast.
I live on the Island, at last a virus safe restaurant.

It’s too clear that this hotel needs to be upgraded. The tile floor in the entrance and bathroom is so old, has cracks where the finish has come off. The shower needs to be regrouted where it’s black in places. Most of the front desk staff is nice and accommodating but Chris needs to be taught what customer service is. When I asked why he was so rude when everybody else was so nice, I was told by his boss “he’s on a mission to find our portfolios.” I said he should be nicer to customers.

We checked in after 11 pm and the front desk was gracious and welcoming.
The lobby had places to sit and an open area bar and restaurant (but it was closed that late)
I like that we had a choice of many staircases we could take, as well as elevators.
We were given a riverview room. Our view was lovely. I especially liked having a balcony where I could enjoy it.
The room was clean. Beds were comfortable. The room was large enough so I could do yoga without bumping into furniture - unlike some places I've visited.
The bathroom was nice, with a good shower. I liked that there was a sink in and out of the bathroom.
There were plenty of hangers - the kind that come out of the closet so they are easy to use. This place had hooks both inside and outside of the bathroom. Most places I've stayed never have enough places to hang towels and etc.
The TV in the room was enormous, but we didn't use it. The Keurig machine didn't work, but I didn't remember to report that.
There was some noise from the HVAC and airplanes overhead.
Since I was there for a two-day work event, I ate there. All the food was decent and we had a good selection.
I enjoyed going for a safe run along the river. I didn't use the fitness center or pool.
We could have walked a little way for food or shopping, but didn't have time.

The web site photos show the conference rooms along the river they are not guest rooms. There are no rooms that look directly at the river, by the river. We asked for one and were assured one but did not get an end room. Breakfast staff are OVERWHELMED by feeding the cruise ship that docks here 3 times per week including Saturdays and Sundays. Staff is very friendly. Nothing is within walking distance. Towels were hard to come by. We enjoyed picking the wild black berries along the river service way. The hot tub jets were not working for two consecutive weekends but the property did have a few pool toys out.

Can you see the Fort Vancouver fireworks from this hotel? What room type and location would be best?
Yes you can!
When we were leaving at 10am people were already checking in. I would assume it is based on availability. If you don't need to get access to the room generally hotels will do the paperwork and then store your luggage so you are free to leave and then stop by for a key later.
We are about 20-30 minutes north of DT Portland which includes rush hour traffic.
There are lots of places to walk and play with your dogs on Hayden Island. Boardwalks along the river. Outside cafe's on the river and Safeway right there for supplies.
Have a great time! =)
