Place was clean and the bed was OK. I stayed there because the hostel was near to where I needed to go. I am in my fifties and would not share a room with a bunch of strangers again even though no one caused any problems.

I found this hostel to be a bit far from major points, but the staff was quick to help me out and I was able to walk around the city. if you don't mind walking, this is a nice place to stay. The main building of the hostel has a small restaurant, but the prices a bit high, so not really worth it. I would recommend checking the surrounding area because the neighborhood it adorable!

My first time in a hostel in a long number of years. Normally I would stay in economy hotels when travelling on my own. On this occasion the location of the hostel suited both where I was coming from and where I was going. The staff were accommodating both in pre arrival communications and instruction for my late arrival. Everything was as promised even if they did leave me holding on the phone for 4 minutes 23 sec while they went to find someone to explain the instructions. Not a worry for a local caller but I was at international rate. The place is eclectic in appearance but entirely functional in opperation. The male dorm was clean and tidy as were the bathroom and toilet. The basement stairs is steep and the key code annoying after breckie. Speaking of breakfast.....free food provided....ie....cereals,sugar, milk, breads and in hostel style use of food donated by other guests that have moved on. This place very obviously prides itself on its strong green credentials which is to be applauded as they have managed to intergrate GREEN into the day to day use of the building seemlessly which is an achievement in an old building. Well done!

On July 3, 2019, after I took the Amtrak Cascades Train going southbound from Seattle, Washington to Portland, Oregon, it was another good challenge of staying for 5 nights at the Portland Hawthorne Hostel, thanks to my 3rd year as a volunteer serving the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, and it was a very good challenge for myself.

Stayed quite recently, the staff take an interest in the guests and their adventures. Ready also for a good conversation. Found the events laid on, including the explanation of how to get around Portland itself, very helpful. The open mic and barbecue were a great way to break the ice and introduce people, but no pressure. Plenty of seats to relax in or outside. Only one comment is the bed fixings possibly need tightening to stop the squeaking, not a problem in the day but noticeable at night. Really good place to stay and the 14 bus route is almost on the doorstep. Safeway store is a few minutes walk, very useful but get the card to save the dollars. Don't forget it's a hostel. If you can't cope with others snoring go to a hotel. Don't make a big deal over something totally beyond someone's control. It's what humans do, get over it. Reiterate... It's a hostel. As hostels go it's very good. Enjoy!

I've been travelling for quite some and being in the city does get to you, so this was a very nice change staying at this hostel. I checked in and was in a 6 person dorm, it was very spacious and had lots of room to move around. The staff were very friendly and held my luggage well after check out time. They have an outdoor area which is great, and they also have hostel activities (when I was there it was pizza night!). Great neighbour to escape to the city.

The Hawthorne Hostel has an atmosphere closer to a home than temporary lodging. And the cozy community vibe extends to the area it's located in: the Hawthorne District! This strip is Portland's most relaxed and bohemian neighborhood for a traveling Millennial to explore. Personally, there isn't a better place to stay or a better neighborhood to be in!

Very comfortable and cozy. I stayed in a women’s room on a Wednesday night and there were only two other guests. Lots of amenities, very functional kitchen and within walking distance to downtown or light rail to PDX! Lockers are located in the basement, not bedside like most others although I felt comfortable leaving my things under the bunk. Thanks for the great stay!

This is the first hostel I’ve stayed in and I was thoroughly impressed. It feels safe and comfortable, with all the doors having locks on them. Met so many great people from abroad. Hope to come back in the future. The only thing that surprised me was that the desk people aren’t all that nice, or inviting, but everything else made up for it.

The check in was great. The guy was very helpful and friendly. It was my first time in Portland. The hostel was clean. The help yourself breakfast worked relatively well - even though the kitchen is quite small. The only downside is it could do with an extra couple of bathrooms / got slightly noisy outside our room (off the kitchen) in the morning. However for the price it's great. The room was clean and the bunks were very comfortable. It was so good I'm staying again this Summer.
